Reading: Literature Standard 1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Reading: Informational Text Standard 4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area. ● Personal Objectives: Students will gain a more clear understanding of the specific animal habitat ● Essential Question: How can we use text to answer questions based on a specific animal habitat? ● Materials: Chromebooks, Habitat worksheet, PowerPoint Presentation, SmartBoard, DocCam, Pencils, crayons/markers/colored pencils ● Accommodations: For students needing accommodations, individualized attention will be provided during worksheet activity. ● DAP: By combining both academic skills and art skills, students use both sides of their brain and are fully engaged. Phase I Students will join the teacher on the front carpet for whole group discussion. As the first slide of the PowerPoint is presented, students will have the opportunity to discuss what they believe a habitat is with their peers. After conversation, the teacher will give the definition of habitat and ask if there is anything that anyone wants to add to the discussion. Transition from Phase I to Phase II Students will be dismissed from the carpet row by row. Once students have found their seats, directions will be given for the upcoming activity.
Phase II Students will get their Chromebooks and be handed a Habitat worksheet. Students will use their Chromebooks and log on their Epic! Reading account where a collection of books has been gathered for that specific habitat. Students will work in small groups and use these online texts to find 2 facts, 2 animals, and 1 plant/flower that grows in that specific habitat and complete their worksheet. Transition from Phase II to Phase III Students will continue working on their Habitat worksheet. Phase III By completing this worksheet as a small group and using each other as resources, students have an opportunity to understand new materials on a social level. This conversation will serve as additional review while giving the students an opportunity to interact with their peers. Students will complete the worksheet and early finishers will color their drawings. Once the student is finished, they will begin Reading Workshop.
