Directors Notes Kate Sarner, Director/Producer It is my pleasure to personally welcome you to the first show of our 2014-2015 season: Curtains! At our first rehearsal, I told the cast and artistic team that one of the reasons I love this musical is because Curtains is, at its heart, a love letter to theater. Curtains not only celebrates the artists directly involved—those “Show People” who band together to create live theater—it also reminds us that what we artists do makes a difference in the lives of those who come and see our work. Theatre is a communal experience that is shared between artist and audience and Curtains exemplifies the joy and spirit that theater has to offer everyone. It has been a delight to create a show that I’m sure will find its way into your heart. As is true of any production, the celebration, joy, and spirit of theatre can be lost in the stress and occasional chaos that erupts throughout the rehearsal and building processes. However, Curtains reminds and asks us to keep our chins up and our hearts willing through the loveably awkward Lieutenant Frank Cioffi—a police detective and musical theatre fan. Cioffi acts as a catalyst for artists and audience alike as he asks us to look at ourselves and our art with fresh eyes and an open heart. His genuine love of the theatre and his sparkling personality reflect the way live theatre can stir the untapped joy and unbridled brilliance inside each of us. As for my own journey on this production, I would like to extend a personal thanks to all of the parent volunteers for their patience, unstoppable enthusiasm, and dedication to the build of this show; to my vocal and pit directors for their artistry and truly collaborative process; to all the dedicated parents who spent hours on top of hours building a strong, knowledgeable, collaborative costume crew; to the talented student tech team for their imaginations, organization and problem-solving skills; and finally to a cast of performers who inspires me day after day with their talent, dedication, and enthusiasm. The 2014-2015 Tosa East Players have not only proven themselves to be a wonderful ensemble, but have represented their school with a great sense of professionalism and maturity. I consider myself blessed to have created such a fun piece with each and every one of these remarkable students, volunteers, and staff members. Now, I ask you to join us as we celebrate one of the oldest and most important theatre traditions: The show must go on!
~ Kate

Production Notes Amanda Marquardt, Choreographer It has been an absolute pleasure to return to Tosa East to choreograph for so many “Happy Feet.” I was lucky enough to spend a good deal of time steeped in the vintage scene during my time on the West Coast. That community of extremely talented musicians and dancers has strongly influenced quite a few of the numbers in this production of “Millie.” From many an evening spent at the luxurious Cicada Club of downtown Los Angeles and viewing Vitaphone shorts at UCLA, among other fantastic old-timey events, I often felt like I had stepped back in time. I am thrilled to see these talented students bring that spirit of the 1920s to life. “Millie” is also a treasure hunt full of music and moments influenced (or directly pilfered) from many sources including Al Jolsen, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Ruddigore, and The Nutcracker to name a few. With a brilliant suggestion from Miss Sarner, a few additional little treasures were added in to the mix. I hope you are able to spot them all! I would also like to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for the show’s talented, organized, patient and dedicated dance captain, Allison Armstrong. She has been invaluable throughout this process. Her departure from Tosa East is bittersweet. She will leave some pretty serious character shoes to fill, but I am certain is taking the first few (probably dancing) steps towards a series of incredible journeys. Wendy Traeger, Vocal Music Director I have been the Vocal Music Director for the Tosa East Players since 1990. Over the course of those many years, I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of exceptionally gifted students. It is always exciting to watch them grow and come into their own as individuals and as performing artists. Many of our East graduates have gone on to professional careers in the arts and/or teaching. It is exciting to know that they were a part of our program here at East – that we somehow had an impact on their lives. As we move ahead to opening night of Thoroughly Modern Millie, I look with great anticipation to sharing our students and their many talents with our audiences. The collaborative efforts of the teaching and instructional staff have helped our students work together and hone their skills to present a polished and professional production. As you sit back and watch this evening’s performance, let our students take you that special world we call theatre. Enjoy and thanks for being with us for our production. JENNIFER LATO, Musical Director When Kate came to me and said she wanted to do Thoroughly Modern Millie, I breathed a sigh of relief. It was very easy to recruit students to play this show, mainly because there has always been such a strong Jazz program at East. All of the music for Millie is Jazz or derived from Jazz, which makes a lot sense when you correlate that Millie is set in the early 20th Century. Everyone was swangin! I want to thank my colleagues Cara Anderson and Wendy Traeger for agreeing to play in the Pit. Cara for stepping outside of her comfort zone and playing some Dixie land jazz Clarinet and Wendy playing the piano, she has already done a fantastic job preparing the students vocally. I’m excited that they both get to play and be a part of this show as instrumentalists. I also want to wish Kate great success with Millie and all future Tosa East Players productions. I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to work with such an amazing cast, crew, and staff. Let’s make some music! CURTAINS

Megan Armstrong
Niki Harris Megan is ecstatic to be on the Tosa East Stage for the fifth time! She was last seen as a Priscilla Girl in Millie and a soloist for By My Side in Godspell. Curtains has convinced this brunette that blondes do have more fun! As member of the Player’s Leadership Board, Megan basically lives in the theatre. However, when she isn’t at theatre she can be found working at North Avenue Grill, crying because her dog is so cute and spending more than her fair share of time in the sun. She sends her love and thanks to all!

CHOO CHOO Prather
Ophelia This is Choo Choo Prather’s first production with the Wauwatosa East Players. He could not be happier to play the role of Ophelia in his first and probably last stage performance. 5 month old Choo Choo has enjoyed the company of the Prather household for the past 3 months after being adopted from the Wisconsin Humane Society in August. In his spare time (which he has a lot of!) Choo Choo enjoys chasing feathery mice toys, biting the edges of laptops, taking cat naps, and getting caught in percussion instruments.

Madeline Berendt
Dance Core, Roberta I am honored to be a part of such an amazing theater program! You can catch me furiously writing down dance formations, and teaching seemingly uncoordinated cast members how to do a time step. I am forever in debt to the wonderful dance core for their amazing effort time and time again during long rehearsals. To my fellow dance captain, Amelia Moore, thanks for all of the help with dance notes and helping me know my left from my right. And to my fellow seniors, I would not want to end my time at Tosa East with any one else.
of it. In the past he enjoyed performing in the Student Play Festival, Hairspray, and Millie. He would like to thank the Cast for getting the songs stuck in his head, the Crew for getting sawdust up his nose, and the Audience for sitting in the correct seat.
Jorey Dvorak
Trombone Jorey is excited to spend another show down in the pit. With it’s darkness and warm mildewey atmosphere, it really is like a second home to her. Jorey previously came up for light, playing on the platform for Millie. With her star 2 bar solo in Nuttycracker Suite, Jorey burst onto the Mid-Ranged Southern Wisconsin High School Theatre Scene. The pit will always hold a special place in Jorey’s heart. Pit is love, pit is life.

Charlie Fahr
Aaron Fox Charlie is incredibly excited to be on the stage for the eighth time on the Tosa East stage. He was previously seen in Godspell and Millie as a chorus member. His time here as a player has been an unforgettable one because of all the wonderful people that he has met here over the years. When he is not on the stage, you can see him playing the piano, teaching and playing tennis. He would like to thank everyone for making theatre such an amazing experience for him.

Harv, u/s Bobby Pepper Morgan is possibly too excited for his third production with the Tosa East Players. From pounding nails (and his fingers) in Godspell, to dancing (or trying to) in Millie and Curtains, it has been an incredible experience with the Players. Morgan would like to give a shout out to the dance core and its captains for all their hard work and dedication throughout this process.
Carmen Bernstein Grace is amped to be on the Tosa East stage once again! You have probably seen Grace before in the performance that earned her the title “dance god of her generation” with her interpretive dancing group Thunder Thighs at Longfellow Middle School. At East she can be found earnestly studying, nobly leading her peers in extracurricular activities and performing seances in the basement. Grace would like to thank her two cats Luna and Bilbo, Trader Joe’s peanut butter pretzels and her theatre gang for making Curtains killer.
claire geertsen
Chorus, u/s Bambi Claire is once again exhilarated to spend yet another fall caught up in the drama of the Tosa East Players. She was last seen typing away on a typewriter in Millie and singing Turn Back O’ Man in Godspell. In her free time she is President of Key Club and Color Guard Captain of the Red Raider Marching Band. She thanks everyone for bearing with her craziness.
grace hayes-dineen
Paint Grace is completely ecstatic to be able to contribute to her seventh show at East. She’s spent time both onstage and off, helping with costumes and paint behind the scenes, pinning wigs to peoples’ heads, and singing and dancing her guts out onstage. This time around she’s flexing her artistic muscles,
