A.

Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson

Class, what have you eaten during your lunch? Okay! After you put your food inside your mouth, what are you going to do? What do you think will happen to your food after swallowing it?

Students are MOTIVATED through asking them about their experience which is related to the lesson.

Name this organ system Clue: Convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body The teacher will show a short video presentation about the digestive system and let the students watch it as they take note of the different organs that comprises the human digestive system. 1. What is digestive system? The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. Food passes through a long tube inside the body known as the alimentary canal or the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). 2. What are the organs that comprise the human digestive system? The alimentary canal is made up of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, and large intestines. In addition to the alimentary canal, there are several important accessory organs that help your body to digest food but do not have food pass through them. Accessory organs of the digestive system include the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas 3. What are the different processes that are involved in the digestion process? To achieve the goal of providing energy and nutrients to the body, six major functions take place in the digestive system: Ingestion, Secretion, Mixing and movement, Digestion, Absorption and Excretion.

 First, I studied ideas from other curriculum learning areas that I could integrate in this lesson. In this case, I integrated LITERACY by using the Hangman word game in order to make the introduction of the topic more interesting to them. They will guess the mystery words by analyzing the clue given.  Students are able to watch a video while taking notes so they are getting a fun and interesting episode while taking notes that will later help them.  Discussing the topic through inquirybased teaching. HOTS questions are asked during the discussion.

The human digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract plus the accessory organs of digestion (the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder). In this system, the process of digestion has many stages, the first of which starts in the mouth. Digestion involves the breakdown of food into smaller and smaller components, until they can be absorbed and assimilated into the body. The different organs of the digestive system include: •Mouth- food that enters the mouth is lubricated and chewed until it forms to a bolus. •Pharynx- common passage ways for digestion and respiration. •Esophagus- is a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the stomach. •Stomach- is the expanded organ located between the esophagus and the small intestine. •Small Intestine- is considered as the organ of complete digestion and absorption. •Large Intestine- temporary stores fecal materials, absorbs vitamins produced by certain symbiotic bacteria in the colon, and reabsorbs water from the indigested residue •Rectum- found at the distal end of the sigmoid colon that serve as a warehouse for the undigested residue or feces. •Anus- exit point of fecal materials •Accessory Organs for Digestion: •Salivary Glands •Liver and gall bladder- produce bile that emulsifies fats and neutralization of the chyme •Pancreas- secretes pancreatic juices that aids in the digestion of proteins

Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

Developing mastery (Leads to Formative Assessment 3)

For your activity, you will have a simple experiment. Stay with your group. I have here two cups of hot water, then on one cup I will put a crushed candy and on the other cup, I will put a whole candy. Observe how long it takes for the whole candy and the crushed candy to dissolve. Use a timer. After that, you answer these questions on a piece of paper, then read and explain it in front. 1. How does crushing the candy to smaller pieces affect its dissolution? 2. What does crushing the candy represents in the process of digestion? 3. How are you going to relate this activity to mechanical digestion?

 Draw and label the parts of the digestive system (See attached activity sheet)  Title: The human digestive system  Explain the process of digestion.

 Students will perform a simple experiment on digestion.  They will also work in groups of 4 in creating a digestive system on an activity sheet.  Each group will explain the process of digestion in chronological order. (In this area, NUMERACY is applied through sequencing of events or process)

The activity sheet is a form of formative assessment

 

Based on you lesson in Health 8, what are the different factors that can cause stomach ache? In what way can it be treated? What are other diseases in the digestive system?

Stay with your group. Make a creative presentation of the summary of the topic and present it in front. Give the functions of the following parts of the digestive system. A. 1. Stomach2. Small intestine3. Large intestine4. Gall bladder 5. Pancreas – B. Label the parts of the digestive system (5 pts)

 Integration of MAPEH, specifically HEALTH, about diseases in the digestive system

 Differentiated learning through making creative presentation of what they learned or summary of the topic based on their interest.
