Most of us have been the subject of gossip at some point in our lives, and we've all felt the sting of humiliation that goes along with it. On the other hand, we've all done some gossiping of our own, and we may have hurt someone else's feelings as a result.

They're finding that, contrary to popular opinion, gossip isn't always bad. Although it can be used to harm others, gossip is also the glue that binds social groups together and a valuable tool that helps people learn the rules of their social worlds.

There are many situations in our workplace that lead us to some gossip. It is important to highlight that most of its outcomes are not constructive and will not help anyone at all. Based on such approach it is important to know some strategies to better deal with this inconvenient subject.

Strategies To Avoid Gossip



Be direct with people who are gossiping about you or others. Tell them that what they're doing is hurtful and that you refuse to participate in such discussions.

Strategy 01





Change the subject. If your boss, a coworker or a close friend is gossiping and you feel uncomfortable asking them to stop, change the subject so that you don't have to participate in gossip that may end up hurting someone else's feelings.

Prevent gossip by paying attention to what you do and say around others, especially around those who tend to gossip. While it may not be fun to censor yourself, at least you won't be providing any new material for people to spread rumors about.

Tell your secrets only to trusted friends to be sure that no one is spreading your business around town.

If someone is gossiping about you at work, handle the situation yourself before reporting that person to your boss. Ask the gossiper to stop talking about you behind your back. If your coworker continues to blab after you've asked her to stop, then talk with your supervisor to remedy the situation.

Don't spread gossip about others. You don't want people spreading gossip about you, so don't gossip about others. Participating in gossip, however fun it may seem in the moment, will only hurt someone's feelings in the end.

When people gossip it’s because they can’t deal with negative issues in their own lives, and it’s easier for them to criticize others than to face their own situation. And finally it gives people a feeling of power.
