Scarlatti-Bryan: "Oboe Concerto No. 1 in G" Leon Goossens and the Philharmonia String Orchestra conducted by Walter Susskind Originally uploaded Sept. 18, 2007 Recorded April 23, 1947, and May 28, 1949 (retakes of Sides 1 and 3) in EMI's Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London. Issued as English Columbia DX 8347 and DX 8348 (automatic sequence numbers; there was no manual sequence release of this set) in August, 1950. The side and matrix information: Side 1 (CAX 9870-3): First and second movements Side 2 (CAX 9879-1): Third movement Side 3 (CAX 9880-3): Fourth and fifth movements The movements of this concerto by Gordon Bryan (1895-1958) are listed below, as well as the Scarlatti harpsichord sonatas that are their source material: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Canzonetta (Sonata in F-Sharp, L. 31, K. 318) Polonaise (Sonata in B minor, L. 34, K. 376) Minuet (Sonata in G, L. 82, K. 471) Aria (Sonata in D minor, L. 423, K. 32) Tarantella (Sonata in F-Sharp, L. 31, K. 318 - opening only)
The last movement appears to be more Bryan than Scarlatti; it begins by quoting the theme from the first movement but then takes off on its own. The filler for this set is Gabriel Piern's Aubade, with piano accompaniment by Gerald Moore. This was recorded June 16, 1947, presumably in Studio No. 3, Abbey Road. Its matrix number is CAX 9974-1, indicating that it was recorded immediately after another Goossens filler on CAX 9973-1 - the Fiocco Arioso, coupled with the Marcello oboe concerto which, coincidentally, was recorded one day before the Scarlatti-Bryan concerto.
