Glorious Humility December 21 , 2008 Pastor John Isaacs KingsWay Community Church

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah 9:6 6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Matthew 1:18-25 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

Matthew 1:18-25 (cont.) 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He

Matthew 1:18-25 (cont.) will save His people from their sins.” 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

Matthew 1:18-25 (cont.) 24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

The Christmas Story • The Annunciation: The angel’s announcement and Mary’s response. • Joseph’s decision to cancel the engagement. Because he loved Mary so much, he decided to do it quietly. He didn’t want to cause her embarrassment.

The Christmas Story • Joseph’s dream, in which an angel of the Lord told him that Mary would give birth to the long awaited Messiah. That she had conceived by the power of God through the Holy Spirit. That the baby boy was to be named “JESUS” because He was the Savior of mankind.

The Christmas Story • The journey to Bethlehem on the back of a donkey to participate in a census decreed by Caesar Augustus. • The shepherds in the field were visited by a “heavenly host” singing, “Glory to God in the highest.” Then an angel told them, “for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

The Christmas Story • No room in the Inn. Bethlehem was over crowded by the numbers of people returning to their place of birth. • The Baby Jesus born in an animal barn, wrapped snuggly in available strips of cloth, and placed in the fresh hay of the cattle’s feeding trough.

The Christmas Story • The bright new Christmas Star appearing in the heavens and pointing to the city of David, Bethlehem. • The three wise men traveling from far away places and bearing gifts to the newborn king, gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The Christmas Story is a story of great contrasts between …

Glory & Humility

The Glory Angelic Visitation and Announcement He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (Luke 1:32-33)

The Humility Mary’s Reputation Mary said to the angel, "But how? I've never slept with a man.“ (Luke 1:34)

The Glory The Awaited Messiah So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” (Matthew 1:22-23)

The Humility Joseph’s Obedience and Sacrifice Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. (Matthew 1:24-25)

Luke 2:8-20 8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified,

Luke 2:8-20 (cont.) 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!

Luke 2:8-20 (cont.) 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying,

Luke 2:8-20 (cont.) 14 “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” 15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Luke 2:8-20 (cont.) 16 They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 17 After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 18 All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished,

Luke 2:8-20 (cont.) 19 but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. 20 The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.
