How Taught
How Evaluated
Introduction: At the start of the lesson, students will be at their desks and I will create a KWL chart on our promethean board. Students will follow along with worksheet template. This will help be a great informal assessment as to what students know about the Three Rs’ (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle before our school celebrates Earth Day. Students will take turns sharing any facts or information they have about this topic and then we will take turns sharing things we want to know. I will help scaffold this conversation by asking thought provoking and age appropriate questions. Then I will show the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle video.
Pre Assessment: Students will have an informal conversation about The Three Rs’ and what they know about Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. They will then fill out first part of their KWL chart (what they already know).
Body: After we watch the video we will reference back to the KWL chart to see if the video helped answer questions we wanted to know more about or if it gave us other, new information. After we finish discussing I will have the students break into three groups to read 10 Things You Can Do to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle by Elizabeth Weitzman. The three groups will then be asked to create an anchor chart on their specific category. Then they will share what they learned about that specific topic with their classmates. Closure: Once this activity is concluded, I will introduce the final part to this lesson, which will assess how much they took away from this lesson. The students will write and explanatory text in which they introduce a topic, use facts
Progress Monitoring: We will use a KWL chart, teacher scaffolding and a reading/ anchor chart to help them think deeper about the impact their actions can make in the world. Post-Assessment: At the conclusion of my lesson, students will take what they have learned about the Three Rs’ and what they can do to help make a positive change in the world. They will demonstrate this by writing The students will write and explanatory text in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
