Introduction: At the start of the lesson, students will be at their desks and I will create a KWL chart on our promethean board. Students will follow along with worksheet template. This will help be a great informal assessment as to what students know about Martin Luther King Jr. Students will take turns sharing any facts or information they have about him and then we will take turns sharing thins we want to know. I will help scaffold this conversation by asking thought provoking and age appropriate questions. Then I will show the brain pop jr video about MLK.

Body: After we watch the video we will reference back to the KWL chart to see if the video helped answer questions we wanted to know more about or if it gave us other, new information. After we finish discussing MLK I will introduce our activity called “direct to draw” and have student helpers pass out papers to classmates. Once all papers are passed out I will give instructions about the activity. We will making a picture of MLK by following step by step instructions and then coloring it accurately. Along with this, students will write in their answer in the speech bubble that says “I have a dream…”. This is will help get them thinking about what they can do to help create a better world. Closure: Once this short activity is concluded, I will introduce the final part to this lesson which will assess how much they took away from this lesson. They will use the given paper template to write 2-3 sentences answering the question “What dream do you have to help make the world a better place?” They will then draw a picture to match. This is piece of the lesson will be done completely independently to better assess how well they can think of their own ideas and see how much they learned from this lesson. Pre Assessment: Students will have an informal conversation about MLK and what they know about him. They will then fill out first part of their KWL chart (what they already know). Progress Monitoring: We will use a KWL chart, teacher scaffolding and a direct to draw activity to help them think deeper about MLK and his influence on our society. Post-Assessment: At the conclusion of my lesson, students will take what they have learned about MLK’s influence on our society to decide what they can do to help make a positive change in the world. They will demonstrate this by writing 2-3 sentences that answers the question “What dream do you have to help make the world a better place?”. They will be scored on sentence structure, following directions and creativity of ideas.
