In Jan. 1978 P r o f e s s o r E . I . V o r o b ' e v , well known as a scientist and an a d m i n i s t r a t o r , winner of the State P r i z e of the USSR, and doctor of m e d i c a l s c i e n c e , c e l e b r a t e s his 60th b i r t h d a y . A f t e r leaving the I. M. Sechenov F i r s t Moscow Medical Institute in 1942, E . I. V o r o b ' e v worked as a doctor in c h a r g e of the functional-diagnostics d e p a r t m e n t of clinic No. 7. As the d i r e c t o r of the m e d i c a l radiology s e c t i o n of the M i n i s t r y of Public Health of the USSR f r o m 1948, he did m u c h to p r o m o t e the e s t a b l i s h m e n t and d e v e l o p m e n t of m e d i c a l radiology in the Soviet Union, and s u p e r v i s e d the introduction of a n u m b e r of i m p o r t a n t m e a s u r e s extending the use of a t o m i c power in m e d i c i n e . F r o m 1961 to 1967, V o r o b ' e v was the d i r e c t o r of the C e n t r a l S c i e n t i f i c - R e s e a r c h X - R a y and Radiological Institute in Leningrad, and s i m u l taneously led the clinical r a d i a t i o n - p a t h o l o g y s e c t i o n . His w o r k in this post has facilitated the development of scientific r e s e a r c h on urgent p r o b l e m s of m e d i c a l r a d i o l o g y . Since 1967, he has b e e n the d i r e c t o r of the third m a i n a d m i n i s t r a t i o n at the Ministry of Public Health of the USSR. E . I. V o r o b ' e v is a s c i e n t i s t of b r e a d i n t e r e s t s , ranging f r o m r a d i o b i o l o g i c a l p r o b l e m s to the p r a c t i c a l use of r a d i e a c t i v e isotopes in biology and m e d i c i n e . The f i r s t book in the Soviet Union on the p r a c t i c a l use of r a d i o a c t i v e isotopes for m e d i c a l p u r p o s e s was published, under joint authorship, m o r e than twenty y e a r s ago. V o r o b ' e v was one of the active c o - a u t h o r s of this book. The scientific r e s e a r c h by V o r o b ' e v and his colleagues in the field of r a d i a t i o n cardiology is the f i r s t c o m p r e h e n s i v e investigation, both in the USSR and e l s e w h e r e , of the effect of ionizing r a d i a t i o n on the c a r d i o v a s c u l a r s y s t e m . The p r o c e s s e s of d a m a g e and r e c o v e r y in the m y o c a r d t u m have b e e n subjected to a profound a n a l y s i s , using d o s i m e t r i c methods which d e t e r m i n e the a b s o r b e d r a d i a t i o n dose with high a c c u r a c y . This r e s e a r c h was s u m m a r i z e d by V o r o b ' e v in the m o n o g r a p h Radiation Cardiology, which has r e c e i v e d due acknowledgement f r o m Soviet and non-Soviet s p e c i a l i s t s . f
