Summer 2009

Director’s Dish Hi everyone, My name is Amy Kirchner and I am very excited to be the new director of the Fluvanna SPCA! Since coming to the FSPCA just two months ago, the shelter is now a friendlier, cleaner, more welcoming place to visit. The animals are receiving more human interaction, both from staff and volunteers, and adoption rates have soared. Please come by and introduce yourself – I would love to meet more of my neighbors. The FSPCA could not have progressed so fast without the help of community volunteers. The animals need you! We are always looking for volunteers to come walk dogs or socialize cats – even if you can only spare fifteen minutes out of your day. There are so many breeds of dogs and puppies, all behavior evaluated, so we can make the right match between the dogs/cats and their potential adopters. Volunteering is fun for the whole family, so please bring your children! Our two exercise pens are a great place to play with the dogs. Children and adults sixteen and over can walk dogs along our wooded trail and children younger than sixteen may walk dogs if accompanied by an adult. Children of all ages can socialize the cats. We are also always looking for volunteers to bring dogs and cats to offsite adoption events so others can meet, and possibly adopt, the animals. Volunteering is not the only way to help the animals. The shelter is always in need of foster families – especially for kittens and puppies who are still too young to be adopted. Donations are also greatly appreciated! Many common household items are in high demand at the FSPCA including towels, blankets, empty prescription bottles, cleaning supplies, paper goods, trash bags, cat and dog food, cat litter and leashes. Monetary donations go directly towards buying dog and cat food, more kennel space and medical treatment for the animals. My goal is to make the FSPCA an integral part of the community. Unfortunately, some Fluvanna residents are not sure where we are located, and some don’t even know we exist, so please tell your friends and neighbors to come visit us at the shelter! I am trying my hardest to ensure that the animals at the FSPCA have the best quality of life possible. These animals are treated like my own pets until they find their new adoptive families! Since I became the director of the FSPCA, no healthy, friendly animal has been euthanized. I am determined to continue my mission to make the FSPCA a no-kill shelter, and I need your help. Whether you volunteer, foster, donate or adopt, your contribution makes a huge difference in the lives of the homeless animals at the FSPCA. Thank you from Mandy, Lilly, Castle, Andy, Brock, Constance, Midget, Dolly, Sunshine, and many more, Amy Kirchner, Director

Interested in Volunteering? We are looking for individuals or groups to assist us with dog walking, cat socialization, and adoption outings. We could also use help teaching new volunteers how to walk the dogs. Additionally, we work with corporate partners and scouting groups to arrange volunteer days. Visit www.fspca.org/volunteer.html for more information and to fill out our Volunteer Application. Volunteer hours are from 9-4, seven days a week.

Foster One of Our Animals Some of our dogs and cats (and puppies and kittens) need a little extra TLC before they're ready to be adopted. Being taken care of in a home can help them heal, get stronger, and become better socialized before being placed in an adoptive home. We are looking for both short-term and long-term fosters. If you can help, please call us at (434) 591-0123 or email us at [email protected].

Adopted Animal Updates Tinkerbelle (now called Bella) is loving life in Connecticut. She had her first visit to the vet and was wonderful (she doesn’t like her temperature taken!). She definitely rules the roost! Almond Joy (now Tatem), one of the Aussie mix puppies, is happy in her new house and making friends with her new “brother”, Sage. She is already housebroken, can sit, and can almost shake hands!

Obedience Class Interested in learning basic obedience techniques? Cheryl Falkenburry, dog trainer and animal behaviorist, will teach an obedience training class on Saturdays at the FSPCA. Cheryl will use shelter dogs to show various training techniques that you can use with your own dogs. To sign up for the class or for more information, contact us at [email protected] or (434) 591-0123.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Fluvanna County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and private organization founded in 1989 in response to a brutal and senseless killing of a pet Labrador Retriever. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Meetings are held at 7 PM on the first Tuesday of the month in the County Administration building on Route 15. The meetings are open to the public—stop by and meet us!
