Fall 2009

Director’s Dish UVa

I feel fortunate to have taken the job of director of the FSPCA and have been amazed over the last several months by the kindness and generosity of the people in this community. I foresee long, happy lives in forever homes for all the wonderful animals at our shelter, but they depend on community involvement to make that dream a reality. Every volunteer, foster home, donor or adoptive family has directly improved the lives of the FSPCA dogs and cats. That is why during this Thanksgiving season, I would love to take the opportunity to personally thank everyone who has made a difference in the lives of the animals at the FSPCA. Please continue your support! Sir Speedy Printing: Kim Bellone prints anything (this newsletter, flyers, posters, business cards, banners) for the shelter for free! Not only does Kim design our promotional items, she volunteers with her mom cleaning cat cages! Jim Starkey, DVM: Dr. Starkey donates his professional services and treats every animal like his own pet. The combination of his kindness and expertise has kept the shelter dogs and cats healthy. We couldn’t make it without him! Fluvanna Rotary Club: This group of outstanding volunteers painted our outdated lobby, office and bathroom! Rotarian Pete Grazzini completed the lobby makeover by building and installing a brand new front counter! Volunteers: The dogs and cats depend on you to walk and play with them! Everyone is welcome seven days a week. The dogs need to be walked twice a day and now the cats have an outdoor enclosure that volunteers can use to play with them. Thank you to everyone who has already given your time to the animals! Our off-site event volunteers help the public learn about the FSPCA and make the animals more accessible to adopt by bringing them to events outside the shelter. Recent events include Lake Monticello Clubhouse, Battlefield Ford, Old Farm Day, E. Rivanna Fire Dept, Grayson Farms Stable and the Gate Plaza shops for our Halloween Dog Costume Parade. United Way’s Day of Caring volunteers: Over fifty people came out to help! Groups included Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women; NGIC; State Farm Insurance; Our Lady of Peace; Musictoday and UVA HS Cardiovascular Research Center. A special thanks to Jim, Joan and my wonderful daughter Allie for leading these teams! Donors: Thank you to all the donors who made a contribution to the FSPCA after the last newsletter! As a non-profit organization, the FSPCA depends on donations in order to provide quality care and medical treatment to the shelter animals. We are still in desperate need of money to buy medicine, food, cat litter, leashes and other supplies. Fosters: Kittens who are still too young to be adopted need to live in foster homes for a few weeks until they are old enough to return to the shelter. Thank you to all the families who have already fostered, but we still need more! Adopters: Thank you to everyone who has adopted one of our wonderful animals. Anyone looking for a new pet should come to the FSPCA. Tell your friends to visit! All Kinds of Signs: The beautiful, bright new sign in front of the shelter was donated by Amy Gentry, owner of All Kinds of Signs. If you haven’t already seen it, please come and look. Beverly Montgomery: We were disappointed when we didn’t get a van donated, but when Beverly offered to donate her station wagon, we were all smiles again. Thank you for helping us get the animals to the vet and off-site events! To end this letter, I would like to sincerely thank the incredibly generous Wheatley family. Tonya Wheatley and her children are devoted animal lovers, amazing volunteers and a wonderful foster family. They have fostered many cats and kittens, walked dogs, administered medications, washed dishes…anything that was needed. Sadly, Tonya’s daughter Caitlin lost her life in the car crash involving four teens on August 20, 2009. Caitlin was an unbelievably kind, generous girl and she is sorely missed by everyone at the FSPCA. Please take a moment to send good thoughts to her grieving family. My prayers are with them in the many days ahead that they cannot share with Caitlin. Amy Kirchner, Director

Jeb

Jeb is a down-to-earth guy, wanting to just hang out with a human. Totally housetrained, inside dog, a little big, a little old, very affectionate. Jeb loves to go for short walks and is looking for someone to watch T.V. with. He talks in a low voice, and definitely understands human language. Please think of adding him as an addition to your household – he’s got a lot to give, and you will not regret the smile he will put on your face every day he graces your path.

Want to Foster Adorable Cats and Kittens? As the number of animals brought to the shelter has increased, we are in desperate need of more foster homes for our cats and kittens. Our foster program allows us to better care for more animals and gives the animals the extra TLC they deserve until they find a permanent home. We are looking for both short-term and long-term fosters. If you can help, please call us at (434) 591-0123 or email us at [email protected]. Dazzle

20th Anniversary Event at Keswick Vineyards Our event was a huge success! We had approximately 215 people attend, with some guests travelling from the Washington, DC area. Attendees had the opportunity to do a wine tasting with Keswick Vineyards, sample some wonderful desserts, and relax in the large picnic area to enjoy the amazing weather. Keswick Vineyards was generous in donating 5% of wine sales from the event to the FSPCA. Guests were able to view and bid on over 40 silent auction items. We really appreciate the public showing its support of the FSPCA by attending the event—thank you all!

Welcome to...

We are happy to announce that Cheryl Falkenburry has decided to join our team! You know her for her knowledge of animal behavior, answering your questions in her column for the Rural Virginian, but now Cheryl is bringing her talents to the FSPCA as our front desk manager. With her knowledge, personality, determination and superior organizational skills, she will be able to assist anyone coming into the shelter with a smile. Please stop in to welcome her! 2009 has been a busy year - 232 adoptions to date and 95 animals reunited with their owners!

4PAWS Thrift Shop 4PAWS has been open for a little over a year and is continuing to grow. We would like to thank all of the people who have donated wonderful items to the store and our amazing volunteers who come from as far as Crozet to sort through donations, organize the store, and assist customers. We are open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Come visit and browse around. We’ll even let you buy something! Donations are accepted anytime but we prefer Friday and Saturday. If you live at Lake Monticello and can’t make it to the store to donate, call Sondra at 589-9056 or the store at 286-4031. 4PAWS is located in the Village Square Shopping Center in Scottsville, near the new Food Lion and between the bank and the post office.

Adopted Animal Updates Heston is almost 5 months old and weighs 25 pounds. As you can see from his picture, he loves his toys and enjoys keeping an eye on the neighborhood! Mya’s parents say she is doing well and is having fun meeting new people and her dog neighbors. Heston
