Dear Ms. Pave: Background about the New Motorcycle Parking Rates: The SFMTA has raised its rates for metered motorcycle parking throughout the City. These rates were raised in correspondence to the increase in rates for automobile parking. The rates for motorcycle parking are intended to be pegged at 1/5 th the rate for automobile parking, reflecting the proportional amount of curb space used by motorcycles in comparison to automobiles. In the downtown area, the rate for automobile parking is $3.50 per hour. This therefore corresponds to a motorcycle parking meter rate of $0.70 per hour. The rates vary depending upon where the parking meters are located in the City. The following table shows the various new rates, along with the old rates.
Parking Meter Old Motorcycle Rate New Vehicular RateNew Motorcycle Rate Area Area 1 $3.50 $0.70 $0.25 Area 2 $3.00 $0.60 $0.15 Area 3 $2.00 $0.40 $0.10 Area 4 $3.00 $0.60 $0.15 The city does recognize the value of motorcycling as a form of transportation. Motorcycles have a mixed bag of advantages and disadvantages as a “green” form of transportation. The smaller size of motorcycles is a virtue in terms of the amount of space required for their parking, and the rates charged for parking recognize that advantage. One of the little known negative aspects of motorcycles, particularly with two-stroke engines, is their affect on air pollution. The California Air Resources Board’s EMission FACtors (EMFAC) model shows that on a per mile basis, new motorcycles can actually generate 14 times the amount of smog forming pollution as a new automobile. One of the other exclusive advantages that the City of San Francisco provides to motorcycle commuters is the benefit of using on-street parking for all-day parking. Automobile drivers--without disabled placards—can only use on-street spaces for short-term parking.

Dear DPT, I just wanted to voice my concern of the price increase for motorcycles. It has increased 280% The rate for cars had only increased 16% This photo is a reflection of the new parking rate, it was take last
friday at 2pm. Previous to the rate increase you'd have to arrive at 6:30am to find a spot here, and they were all occupied all day. Now I'm seeing 20-70% vacancy. http://i.imgur.com/KP2cB.jpg Thank you for listening. If the fare were reduced to .50/hr, I'm convinced that every spot would be full all day. That's still a 100% increase over the previous rate. Thank you for listening, Sasha Pave Motorcycle commuter. 415 ### ####
