Introduce Traditional music.

Sanding

The students will research information on traditional Irish music and focus on the history and heritage of the bodhrán. A portfolio will be started with this information. The students will be shown a sample bodhrán and will then be asked to design their own type of bodhrán and invent new modern ways of making it.

The students are asked to design their own logo or piece of art work.

Once the designing process is finished the students will begin sanding their frames.

The teacher will ask for the students to research information on traditional music. The students will put the info into a portfolio for the teacher to examine. The teacher will show a sample bodhrán to the students and will inspect the quality of bodhráns the students are designing.

The teacher will show the students sample drawing and pictures to give the students ideas.

The teacher will have the frames already made to speed up the process. Once the teacher is happy

The portfolios will be examined and will have to reach a high standard in order to move o to the next process.

If the students design a high standard bodhrán and ate confident that they will be able to make it the student can make their own design. The students will hand up the design ideas and the teacher will determine if the students are allowed to use the design The students have to have an adequate design finalized before getting the frame to be sanded.

Once the skin is cured in the concentrated water the students will remove the hair and apply the skin to the bodhrán while still wet. Once the skin is dry the students will apply a water based lacquer which will preserve the timber and give it a shiny look. Once the finish is dry the students can start attaching the tuning screws and apply the tape to the front of the bodhrán.

Once the bodhrán is finished being made the students will move to the music room and begin to learn how to hold the bodhrán firmly and how to play a slow reel and jig rhythm. The students will begin to play the jigs and reels at a slightly faster tempo. The students will be able to play the bodhrán at a relatively fast tempo.

with the designs the frames will be handed out. The teacher will have to make up concentrated water including bogwater and builders lime during the Christmas to let the skins soak in to speed up time. The teacher will have the skins ready for removing of the hair and also give a demonstration on how to apply the skin to the bodhrán.

Christmas Holidays

All of the hair has to be removed from the skin and the skin is tightly applied to the bodhrán.

The teacher will demonstrate to the student how to apply the finish to the bodhrán.

The finish will have to be a high quality shiny lacquer with no defects present.

The teacher will demonstrate to the students how the tuning screws are connected to the frame and also how the tape is applied to the skin.

The tuning screws must be placed in the correct position following the template made by the teacher. The tape on the skin must not have any air bubbles present.

The music teacher will get the students to hold the bodhrán in the correct position and demonstrate to them how to play the different rhythms. The teacher will begin to play traditional music for the students. The teacher will get the students to increase the speed of their playing.

The students will be able to play a very slow jig and reel.

The students will be able to keep in time with the music that is being played for them. The students will be ready to at the end of year school concert.
