Facing the End Game By Lauren Farrow
When Fred Cress was first told his fortune, he was three years old and close to death. Living in the Indian city of Pune, his family consulted a faith healer. “The faith healer told my mum: ‘this boy is going to be an artist known throughout the world’,” Fred said. The prophecy came true. Having won an Archibald, exhibited in New York, London and the First Biennale of Sydney, the Annandale artist has had a illustrious career. But now cancer has ripped
through his body, invading his spine, liver and bladder. In recognition, Cress, who has never been afraid to explore various human frailties, including lust, adultery and deception, has captured the final chapter of his life in this month’s exhibition, “End Game One”. “If I survive long enough to have another exhibition, I will call it “End Game Two”, because everything is the end game from now on,” he said. Cress’s current paintings examine humanity’s failures of violence and oppression in a political light,
