ARTS

The inspiration of a life without regrets marking a change from earlier works which have been inspired by friends’ secrets and his own experiences with love and loss. “I don’t care about dying. I have packed in as much as I could into my life. I have eaten good meals, drunk good wine. I have had great affairs. I have done it all.” While travel and love affairs have enriched his life, Cress said it was a midlife crisis at 43 that shaped his career and outlook. “I wanted to get down to my true self. I found that I am an intimist and a harbourer of secrets. I always found myself, if I went to a party, stuck in a corner of a room with someone telling me their secrets.” This epiphany saw his style change from abstract to figurative works focused on secrets surrounding sex, affairs and guilt. The stylistic change led him to win

the Archibald for his portrait of fellow painter John Beard in 1988. Looking back on a life full of love affairs, art and family, Cress has no regrets. “Why would I be sorry for my affairs? When you are with women, both of you are growing and changing. If the experience doesn’t work out then it doesn’t, but it would be a shame if you missed out on that. “Lots of people think of themselves in terms of distillation. They go through life trying to establish what’s good and what’s bad. I think of myself in terms of condensation of the good and the bad because I don’t think of it as bad, I just see it as the other side of the coin.” “End Game One” is showing from March 17 to April 4 at Australian Galleries, 24 Glenmore Rd and 15 Roylston St, Paddington.
