Sample Formal Lesson Plan: Grammar: Fortune Telling Bruce Lawrence

Objectives: They will learn about describing someone’s hand. They will also learn how to describe someone’s future or predict someone’s future. Students will also learn some intricacies between using “will” and “be going to” as future tense options. Other future tenses (present and present continuous tenses) will be mentioned but not in detail. If -clauses will also be taught. Prerequisites: Students should have a basic knowledge of fortune telling and future tenses especially “will” and “be going to”. Basic knowledge of “if” clause is useful. Level: Intermediate Duration: 2 hours Materials: photocopies of hand for all students and one copy of one of the expert sheets (there are 10) so if there are less than 10 Ss, pick some Ss to double up Set up: -

-

Survey: Ss will need room to walk around, so move the desks Palm reading: copy one hand for each, but one expert card C plan: have Fortune sticks & I Ching ready if Ss want

Anticipated problems: Some Ss will have trouble with the expert sheets. There are some tricky “if” conditionals, so circulate and help.

Warm up: T: Did you have a good weekend? What did you do on the weekend? S: I went to the beach. I went to a club/restaurant/etc. <Specific Qs: future tense> T: On the weekend my wife was studying for here exam. It was funny. She said she wished she knew the future so she could know if she passed or not. I said we should go to a fortune teller! Has anyone ever been to a fortune teller? Ss: y/n T: (if yes) “What happened? T: When I was in Korea I studied Hapkido and my partner’s name was Ji Woong. He went to a fortune teller and the fortune teller told him that he had to marry his girlfriend or she was going to break up with him and he wouldn’t get married until he was thirty! So he did! They got married and now they have a kid. Teaching: T: How do make the future tense in English? Ss: “will” T: Yes. Will (write on board) What other ways are there? There are four ways. Do you know them all? (elicit all four and write in the following order) <Whiteboard form/pron: future tenses> present The marriage ceremony starts at 7pm. present continuous I’m marrying Tinny at 7pm BE going to I’m going to marry Tinny at 7pm. will I’ll marry Tinny. T: How can I finish this sentence: “If it rains, …” Ss: We will get wet! T: How else can I finish it? <Whiteboard form/pron: if conditionals> If it rains, we get wet. <present tense> If it rains, we are going to get wet. If it rains, we will get wet. <will> T: Look at my hand. Is it big or small? Ss: Big/small/so so T: Look at line. Is it long or short? Ss: Long/short/so so T: Look at this mound. Is it flat or rounded? Ss: flat / rounded /so so

T: Look at this phalange. Is it long or short? Ss: Long/short/so so Main Activities: Part I: Survey T: OK, we are going to do a very quick activity. You have to talk to 3 people and find out what they are going to do after they graduate from this course. If they talk about their own personal schedules you write down their personal plan using which 2 tenses? Ss: be going to or present continuous! T: If they mention an official institution like work or school? Ss: present! <Example> T: OK, so for example, Hisami, what are you going to do when you finish this course? Hisami: Um, look for work? T: So what do I write down? Ss: Hisami looks for Hisami! Jack is going to look for work! T: Is Hisami an official institution? Ss: No. Hisami is going to look for work! T: OK, Hisami, pretend like you got a job and it starts September 1st. OK, so again, Hisami, what are you going to do when you finish this course? Hisami: I gotta job. I’m going to start in September. T: So what do I write down?... Hisami job… Ss: starts in September. T: Got it? Go! So, what are you supposed to do with your partner? OK? Clear? Go! II: Palm Reading T: OK, so now we are going to focus in detail on the difference between “will” and “be going to” You are all going to become fortune tellers today. Ss: Wow. T: Yeah, you are going to learn how to read palms. I’m going to give you each a palm sheet (give out palm sheet) and also I’m going to give you one sheet on how to become an expert at reading one line on the palm. So, first you have to read the box on how to become an expert at reading one line, then you take notes on your own palm in the box at the bottom. Then you read everyone else’s palm and give them their fortune, And you will receive your fortune on all the other lines from the other students. There are 10 lines in all.

<Example> T: So, Tinny, what’s your line? Tinny: Life line. T: So it says “If the line is long and clear you will live a long time” Is it long and clear? Tinny: Yes, I think so. T: So, you are going to live a long time! Congratulations Tinny: Yay! T: Now, Tinny, what tense did I use first/second? Tinny /other Ss who remember: will/be going to T: Right. It’s the same pattern. When you make an immediate prediction of the future you use “will”. For example Tinny, I foresee that you will marry an ugly man! Tinny: What?! Ha ha T: So, for predicting the future which tense do you use for first mention? Ss: will T: Second mention? Ss: going to OK, Go get your fortunes! Wrap up: T: OK, Jack how long are you going to live? Shizuka, when are you going to get married? Hideo, how many kids are you going to have? (make sure they answer using “I’m going to…” T: What the first tense you learned from your grammar text books? Ss: Will T: Is that the most commonly used tense in English? Ss: No T: Which is the most common tense in spoken English? Ss: be going to Contingency Plan: If Ss finish early, have four of them become fortune tellers and give fortunes. Homework: Easy: Go home and play this game with your friends Difficult: Write down your fortunes in a summary paragraph.

The Future! <present> The movie starts at 7pm. <pres. continuous> I’m seeing a movie at 7. I’m going to see a movie at 7. <previous decision> <will>I’ll see Star Wars. If you see a black cat, you get bad luck. <present tense> If you see a black cat, you are going to get bad luck. If you see a black cat, you will get bad luck. <will>
