Treasurer’s Trove 5th instalment for 2006… We’ve had quite a couple of events since the last report… The Interclub Challenge at Anakie also hosted the final Trials Victoria Free Junior Development Camp for 2006 on the Saturday. It was excellent to see the Treller family out in force after a quiet mid-season as well as the return of our Canberra crew, the Lonies. Coaches for the Juniors were numerous again, underlining the support from the general Trials community for these camps – the feeling is that they should continue next year. Another big turnout for this event, confirming Anakie as a favourite for many riders. OMCC secured the Kerry Davis Memorial trophy again – weight of numbers perhaps – impressive that with five clubs present, the Canberra club took out fourth place. Sam’s Trial was brief on the Sunday, coming to grief on Section 5 of the first lap. & jamming his knee between the bike and a rock. Damage was limited to bruising only – although it did restrict his movement for a few days and cause us to vary the route for our 4WDing holiday that started the next day!
It was a day for Junior offs as Zachary Mularczyk experimented with reversing the usual relationship between bike & rider. Zach has re-confirmed that things tend to go better when the rider is above the bike & contact is via the footpegs rather than the tyres! I didn’t get to the Mardan Club Day as we were wallying about the NT, but reports suggest people enjoyed themselves as usual. The Come & Try day held at the club grounds can only be described as a success. Six sections were set, increasing in difficulty to a Clubman+ standard. The object being not to test riders or bikes on the day, simply to let the new riders get a feel for trials. Beta & Sherco supplied bikes and personnel – even the new mini-trail/trial that Sherco are now carrying got serious consideration and it was terrific to see a solid turnout of club members willing to assist and a worthwhile day for the sport, the club and the dealers. We had close to 30 riders sign up for the day, with a good cross-section of Juniors, Seniors & Veterans represented. At around 11:30am things were very busy, with punters queuing for bikes, minders giving instruction, snags & eggs flying out of the kitchen & the sun beaming on the bountiful goodwill & camaraderie. (Did I overplay that bit?!)
Riders were assessed for ability and, where accepted were grouped into categories to alert the Minders to the skill level they were dealing with. Lots of feedback from the Minders re positive comments from punters and we had two punters upgrade to full memberships on the day. I’m expecting more to convert over time – we’ll have to see. The AGM, Presentation Night & XMAS Sleepover are all combined at the clubgrounds this year. Suggestions for details of the event will be well received! Elsewhere in this newsletter, you will find the Calendar of events for 2006 – and also the current DRAFT 2007 Trials Vic Calendar – once this is ratified, we will start adding OMCC-specific events. See you out there…

Secretary’s report It’s a pleasure to report that the final phase in the earthworks saga has been completed. On Friday 13th October about 120 tonnes of recycled, crushed concrete and brick was delivered to the clubgrounds and “chained out” over the carpark. Then the following day Cam Emmerson arrived with a big Bob-Cat and spent about seven hours spreading and levelling it out. The final result was amazingly smooth and level and I think Cam got a bit of a kick out of discovering he hadn’t lost his skills. The combined operation cost the club around $2,000 for the topping and transport. A big thank-you to Cam for his contribution and to Clarklift Melbourne Pty Ltd for supplying the Bob-Cat at no charge to the club. It was good to see the new carpark packed with vehicles on the Come-n-Try day, Sunday the 22nd. This was a very successful venture and will no doubt be reported on in detail elsewhere in this newsletter. The procedures decided on by the committee worked without a hitch and will give us a good starting point for what may become a bigger, annual event. Don’t forget that the clubgrounds will be open on Thursday evenings from about 6pm commencing on the second of November following the introduction of daylight saving - provided a supervisor turns up to open the gates! If you are intending to turn up but haven’t attended a monthly general meeting or an event recently, it would pay to check with one of the committee members listed on the first page, (email only, please) to make sure a supervisor will be there. There is a motion on the table to be considered at this year's AGM about raising the cost of membership. In view of rising costs in every direction and the committee's desire to promote the club more widely to encourage trials riding, there is a strong chance that membership costs will rise, particularly since very few members other than the committee bother to turn up at the AGM. So here is your chance to save money!!! Renew your membership before the AGM! There is a membership form in this newsletter. Get cracking! On a more personal note, steady progress is being made in the Clake saga, despite a significant setback to the chief engineer and test pilot, one Owen Hutchison, who kinda wrecked his left knee in a non-trials motorcycle incident. However, this didn't stop him spruiking the Clake on the Australian Motor Cycle News (AMCN) stand at both the Moto GP at Phillip Island and the Expo at Jeff's Shed. The result is widespread interest and support from Australia and overseas including some positive offers from a well known Motor Cycle manufacturer who, for the moment, must remain anonymous. There is a good chance you'll see a pre-production version on my bike before the end of the year. Believe me, you'll be impressed (by the snazzy Clake, that is; not by my lessthan-snazzy riding)!
Rob Murdoch.
GOLDEN YEARS 22 Chris Leighfield Every year, the RAF Motorsports Division held a one day trials school for around twenty interested servicemen. The instructor in chief was none other than Sammy Miller who decided he needed an assistant. He approached Frank Hipkin for Jonah’s help but, since Jonah wasn’t available, Frank asked me. For some reason, I was asked to take Frank’s bike rather than my own so I picked it up the night before, ready for a reasonably early start. The school was to be held at the Army’s Bordon Camp in the South of England, a four hour journey away. A natural common of sand hills, part of the immense area of War Department property, nearby Weaver’s Down, was the venue for riding. This was where I had ridden my first non-club trial two days after my sixteenth birthday. (Golden Years 3) I arrived in good time to find the RAF contingent and Sam already there so I unloaded and we followed Sam to his first section location. Prior to this time, I only knew a couple of the participants, but I quickly learnt just how large was their range of ability. A few were really quite competent but, at the other end of the scale, some could barely ride up and down not too steep short climbs. Well, in theory that gives you plenty with which to work but, realistically, the main reason riders were at that level was because they lacked the required confidence to improve. Neither Sam nor I were psychologists and Sam tended towards the more proficient because he could see that promising results would probably be achieved. I started off with the “duffers”. The first thing about going down hills is that, if there is nothing in the way at the bottom, it doesn’t matter if things get a bit out of control and the bike runs away. The secret is to understand and apply the fact that grabbing a handful of front brake isn’t the right way to go. The same applies to going uphill when there is nothing in the way over the crest. It is important to have enough speed and, as with going downhill, overshooting doesn’t matter at this stage. To their credit, most of my pupils gave it a go and were just starting to control speed in both directions when Sam decided it was time to move on. From that point his sections were harder and my guys struggled trying to do loops downhill, turning sometimes in soft sand and climbing. They did try, however overshoots at the bottom of the drop were common. Unfortunately, they became discouraged and wandered off to nearby easier hazards not connected to any of the school’s activities. In retrospect, I probably should have gathered them up and continued from where we had left off but Sam asked me to give comment to the others as they exited the section whilst he looked for his next hazard. So the day went on. A few pupils rode trials like they would scrambles and it was the hardest thing to get them to slow down. They certainly didn’t lack confidence. One of the best riders there was Jon Tye, younger brother of well known BSA factory trials and scrambles rider David. John wasn’t at top rider standard but he did have a good idea of what was wanted and tried hard. Following close behind was Ted Thompson who rode more in Reliability Trials (Enduros). Ted represented the armed forces in the ISDT on a number of occasions. Eventually, Sam called “lunch” whereby he, Jon, Ted, Wing Commander Ted Underwood and I headed off to the Deer’s Leap pub, just the other side of the down. Even on training days such as this, rank was observed, the three men being commissioned officers. The remainder of the class, all non-commissioned, were left to their own devices. We spent a most pleasant hour with a pint and a cheese cob, the usual pub lunch. The afternoon session was much shorter. I did however get my chance to ride Sam’s bike. It was always reputed that his throttle control was so good that his engines were tuned like scramblers and one short ride on his bike confirmed this. Before I hardly had time to collect my thoughts, it took off up the hill at which I was pointed. Having got a little used to it, I had a great time before having to hand it back. Frank’s Sprite had almost non-existent fork damping and I struggled all day to control it on downhills where braking and turns were required. When the school concluded, we all headed back to Bordon, where I was invited into the Officer’s Mess for afternoon tea. I had just sat down when Jon Tye entered carrying a note left by the telephonist. It was from Sprite-BSA (heavens knows where the BSA part came from!) to say Frank had advised there was no oil in the forks. That explained the lack of damping and Frank would undoubtedly have phoned sufficiently early but unfortunately we assembled at Weavers’ Down so didn’t get the message before riding. Afternoon tea was very welcome and being waited on made me feel like royalty. The conversation was most interesting. Bill Underwood, who I hadn’t met before that day, took the lead. These guys were jet aircraft pilots and their stories were interesting to say the least. Finally, it was time to head for home. The afternoon traffic wasn’t too heavy and I completed the journey without incident.
In following years, Sam approached me directly to go and help. Each time we used a different piece of War Department ground, avoiding tank testing and the like which the army was conducting at the time. The sun literally shone on the forces and I don’t remember ever having anything but perfect weather for those schools. Having got to know quite a number of riders during that time and having established ongoing friendships, I bumped into many of them at future trials. One of “my” pupils from that first school, Harry Kline, who lived in Derbyshire, didn’t ride in National trials but it was not unusual for him to turn up as a spectator riding a big Sunbeam. In its factory colour of pale green, and with huge balloon tyres, it was probably one of the largest and quietest motorcycles of its time. I last saw Ted Thompson at the 1971 ISDT in the Isle of Man. As usual, he was representing the armed forces and riding his B40 BSA under extreme difficulties. He had a very swollen tendon in his right wrist and was being loaded with pain killers in an effort to keep him going. He managed to reach the finish, however his performance was not as good as he would have wished. I saw Bill Underwood a few times. Strangely enough, it was never on a trials bike. Jon Tye was a regular competitor in both local and National trials. Consequently I ran into him on many occasions. Recently, I saw a photo of him, together with Sam and a few other top riders of the era, taken at the 2005 Pre-65 Scottish Two Day Trial.

Come and Try trials day 22nd October The Come And Try day was a successful event. Leaflets were handed out by the Beta and Sherco dealers from their displays at the Melbourne Motorcycle Expo two weeks earlier, inviting riders to bring boots and helmet to try a trials bike at the OMCC club grounds. On the day the Beta and Sherco dealers set up Marquees and lent out their bikes to a sizeable batch of keen participants. The OMCC classic trials enthusiasts also displayed some of their machines. In addition to a couple of club members, around 30 new visitors showed a variety of skill levels in the taped off sections aiming to gently introduce the concept of trials riding. OMCC members acted as minders to answer questions, explain the safety aspects, basic bike controls (yep, first gear for all today’s obstacles!) and escort the riders through the sections. The canteen was also open and on a warm day, sold lots of drinks and BBQ food. This looked like an event worth repeating to promote both Trials generally and OMCC as a club.
News Congratulations to OMCC member and World Superbike rider Steve Martin and partner Sandra on the birth of their first child, Axel Alexander.
Trevor Campbell comments on the Trials Des Nations OMCC members Trevor Campbell and Dylan Rees were part of the 4 man Australian team (plus Manager Dennis Fitzpatrick) at the recent TDN. The team’s trip began with flying into Spain to pick up the Gas Gas and Sherco bikes from the factories then driving to Belgium to spectate at the final round of the Moto Trials world championship. The trial consisted of man made obstacles at the Spa-Francochamps road race circuit. The sections were on rocks with some muddy gullies in between, made slippery by addition of water by the organisers. Trevor described the sections as far exceeding the difficulty of the Australian expert level. Where the local sections might have one hard part in the section, the world level sections had five hard obstacles and the riders’ ability to find traction stood out. Trevor picked up his TDN bike, the Beta head mechanic’s personal machine, in Belgium and the team then travelled to Breals Monfort, France arriving at the site of the TDN the Tuesday before the event. Trevor was very impressed with his bike, asking what modifications had been made. The reply was “like it came out of the crate”. (Maybe it was a 2007 crate?) The team was the first to arrive at the site and rode every day prior to the event experiencing four days of rain. The wet conditions meant the muddy ground chopped up in front of every obstacle increasing the difficulty for the Aussies. The competition was located partly in a quarry with big round rocks and on hill climbs with rock steps. The team of Michael Byrne, Colin Zarzynski, Dylan and Trevor were assisted by minders Mitch Willcocks, Jamie O’Neil and Dennis Fitzpatrick. Trevor was very happy with his ride and the Aussies finished second in Group B behind the Irish team. Trevor described the Irish team as being particularly strong with Rob Crawford, a former world top 10 rider, and Andrew Perry also a stand out. The Australians performed well and where one rider made a mistake the others tried to lift to keep the team on track, a good team that worked well together. The only drama seemed to be Mick Byrne breaking his chain on the first lap After finishing the first lap of the Trial in second place with a nine-point advantage over Belgium, the Aussies extended that gap through the second lap to end up 13-points clear of third. In Group A, Spain was victorious, followed by Great Britain and Japan. Group B results 1. Ireland – 50, Australia – 80, Belgium – 93, Netherlands – 110, Norway – 110, Switzerland – 138, Andorra – 182, Poland – 289, Portugal – 292, Venezuela – 330, Canada –370, Luxembourg – 374, Latvia - 385
