local time on 27 May 2006, causing widespread destruction and chaos in its wake. The latest official figure states that 5,749 people were killed, over 38,000 injured and more than 127,000 houses completely destroyed as well as over 450,000 additional houses damaged by the earthquake. It is estimated that 1,173,742 people were made homeless1. Six months have passed since the catastrophe, yet urgent help is still needed on an hourly basis. As the nation enters into the hyper-drive stage in nation building, building human capital is inevitably the paramount priority; without which the country lacks the competitive edge in this globalised world. What kind of human capital do we, as a nation, aspire for? One whose competence, skill, knowledge and competitiveness rivals that of the best in the world, yet retains our humanity, compassion and values. The efforts to mould our future professionals to meet this aspiration begin in the class room as well as outside; and must be carried out hand in hand. The moral conscience of the need of those who suffer from the Yogyakarta tragedy; and the practicality of taking this opportunity to develop holistic character for the nation’s human capital needs – presents the students of Kolej MARA Banting with a chance to contribute to alleviate the sufferings through this project aptly named “Fish For Life”2
The project fused together the character building aspects with harnessing the students’ enthusiasm to contribute to the victims of the Yogyakarta earthquake tragedy

CONCLUSION
“A Small Cost For A Big Return” Fish For Life attempts to bring a new level of volunteerism among the students bound for overseas (mostly destined for medical courses) in recognition of the utmost importance of the soft skills and empathy to guarantee medical professionals who fit the challenges and aspiration of the future. It is the recognition that without empathy and values, our huge investment in the education of our youngsters is nothing but hollow – as there is a greater and greater risk that we churn out future professionals who are out of touch and oblivious of national agenda; the opposite of the very purpose the nation embarks on massive scholarship program in the first place.

FISH FOR LIFE | Proposal For Sponsorship
It is our hope that Fish For Life receives the due support and attention; because the amount of cash required is miniscule compared to the benefits of well-rounded and virtuous medical professionals that the project attempts to achieve.
