Eliza Broadus Offering for State Missions
$ SEPTEMBER FIGURES $
For Kentucky Baptists, 2010 could become the “year of the horse.” As many as 600,000 people are expected to compete in or attend the World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Many people who arrive will have never heard the gospel before. A group of Kentucky Baptists already are at work planning ministry events and recruiting volunteers, but WMU hopes even more people will become involved through prayer, and by supporting this year’s Eliza Broadus Offering for missions in Kentucky. The money will go to support disaster relief, Baptist Campus Ministries, Eastern Kentucky ministry centers and many others.

From Your Pastor
Jim Ewing
Well, it has been one year this month that my family and I joined with you here in Calvert City. While we are still working to get our house in Paducah sold, we are here in virtually every other way! Pretty much all we do in Paducah is sleep. Thank you all for making this first year such a blessing. The first year for a pastor is mostly about watching and learning … but together we have accomplished some important things over the past several months. We purchased a new management software package called PowerChurch Plus that will help us manage membership, attendance, and finances in a single package. We have been through initial training and into the process of preparing the software to help us better manage all our activities. This past spring Ken Musgrove, Annessa Roberts, Carolyn Outland, Judy Smith, Bill Kunnecke and I completed an initial safety & security review of our facility and procedures. We looked at a host of issues and developed a list of recommendations that we are addressing with the Buildings & Grounds committee. Among the recommendations was the use of a nursery pager system that is already in place. Very soon we will install shades in the Fellowship Hall to provide visual security for the music/sound equipment. As funds become available we will be considering additional measures to ensure our staff, members, and guests are afforded a secure place to fellowship and worship. Thanks to the leadership of folks like Nigel and Phillip Broyles and Kathryn Goheen, our Senior Adult Ministry is up and running at full speed. We got the siding replaced, a brand new sign for the front … and thanks to an anonymous gift, we will soon have new sanctuary doors and entry way lights installed. In addition, that gift will allow us to remodel the ladies restroom, purchase the blinds for the fellowship hall, and purchase a CD/DVD recording system to replace our old cassette system. Looking toward the future, we are well underway in our planning for a mission trip to Jordan in the fall of 2010. This initial trip will be small in numbers but will hopefully open the door for a vital international mission partnership. Finally, Karen Dodson and Gene Low have been instrumental in revitalizing a prayer ministry for our church. If you would like to learn more about our prayer ministry, please let them know. This will make a significant impact on us as a body and I am convinced that it will open the door for God to use us in ways that we can’t yet imagine. There is much more that this past year has brought us … this is just a taste of what’s happened. But I am looking forward to even greater things in the future as we pursue our common fellowship in the Lord. He is good! And is good to be a part of this wonderful church family! Together in Him,
Minister of Music & Education
Rick Johnson
PABA Annual Meeting The Purchase Area Baptist Association’s Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 15, at the Poplar Spring Baptist Church in Murray. The meeting will begin with a meal at 6:00 p.m. and a program and Business Session will follow. If you can attend this meeting, please let me know so we can give an accurate number of people attending and for the meal. There will be no cost for the meal but we do need to give them an idea of how many will be eating. Trunk ‘R’ Treat Coming Soon! Our church will observe Trunk ‘R’ Treat again this year. It will be held on Wednesday, October 28, at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. We will enjoy a meal at 6:00 p.m. and the activities will begin around 7:00. No choirs or any other regularly scheduled activities will be happening that evening. Those will resume the following week. Come and bring your family for a good night of fun and fellowship. Clinical Pastoral Education News I am preparing to move from Level I CPE to level II. One of the guys in my group and I will be meeting with a committee in Louisville on Friday, October 9. We will each meet before a committee of three CPE supervisors. They will help to determine our readiness for level II. This will be a large hurdle for us. Please pray for both of us as we meet with this committee. This is my third unit of CPE. There are four units altogether. We have four people in our group, one female and three males. Our class time is led by our Supervisor, Chaplain, Jim Wright. We have two Baptists, one Pentecostal and a Catholic Priest in our group. We are beginning to form as a group that can trust each other. We are learning the process of group dynamics and how things work in group process. These kinds of dynamics work in the church as well, so it is very helpful. The books I am reading for this third unit are: “In a Different Voice,” “The Courage to Teach,” and “Shared Wisdom.” All these books are helpful as far as working with people and learning how to be aware of the differences in people and how they do things. The book “In a Different Voice” speaks to the differences between men and women and how we relate differently. It is an interesting book to read. We are still meeting for our class time on Mondays from 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. back in the Educational area of the hospital. The Chaplain’s office is just behind the Women’s Center at Western Baptist Hospital. I am oncall one night each week during each unit. Those experiences have been very interesting and I have learned much about people and how they react to sickness and tragedy in their lives.

Children’s Christmas Party Donations
OCTOBER 24TH Upcoming October Events
Our annual Children’s Christmas Party will be Tuesday, December 8. Even though it is still a few months away, we need donations in order to plan this event. Gifts are bought for children who may otherwise not have a Christmas. If you would like to participate in this ministry, please place a donation in a blue envelope and write “Children’s
Christmas” on it and place it in our offering plate. This is a way we can help the less fortunate in our community.
