ISBN 1-59370-150-0 ISBN13 978-1-59370-150-5 $69.00 us

In the second edition of Incident Management for the Street-Smart Fire Officer, author Skip Coleman expands on the mindset and tactics necessary to manage the fireground with more control and less chaos. Incident management system (IMS) is a tool that defines the role and responsibilities of each fire department member, allowing crew members to function quickly and efficiently upon arrival at the fireground—all the while meeting the commander’s expectations. Regardless of the size or geographic location of the fire department, an IMS is one of the most practical innovations available that yields measurable results. The days of chief officers pulling up to a fire and allowing the fire to run them are over. Incident management makes thinkers out of commanders.

Even though firefighters have strapped on some type of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for more than a century, the proud history of fire service always revered the toughest of the “smoke eaters.” Intermittent use of SCBA, lack of proper procedures and training, and sometimes even those time-honored fire service traditions resulted in a tragic loss of life. The toughest of these lessons are here for all firefighters to read and learn. Proper use of SCBA and PASS devices, stricter enforcement of procedures, and an unflinching adherence to the rules will benefit firefighters in every department. This new offering from the expert instructors at the Seattle Fire Department offers a comprehensive explanation of how to develop and implement an effective air management program, for departments of any size. It includes examples from international departments, the newest technology breakthroughs, and guest essays from the leaders in fire engineering programs nationwide.

Although municipal firefighters respond on a daily basis to industrial fires or emergencies, even the largest fire departments often focus most of their training and attention to structural or wildland firefighting. It is increasingly probable that municipal firefighters will be called to an industrial incident due to a fire or terrorist event. The authors have written this book to specifically prepare the municipal firefighter for responses to a wide range of industrial fires, where the situation will be monumentally different. Industrial Firefighting for Municipal Firefighters is an ideal resource for municipal firefighters who may respond to an industrial incident, personnel at industrial facilities that have in-house, first-response capability, and larger industrial fire departments.

Firefighting Operations in HighRise and Standpipe-Equipped Buildings by District Chief David M. McGrail, Denver Fire Dept.

ISBN 1-59370-054-7

ISBN13 978-1-59370-054-6

$79.00 us

This book establishes a proper firefighting mindset and promotes maintaining preparedness for the extreme physical and mental demands of firefighting operations in high-rise and standpipe-equipped buildings. Armed with firefighting weapons that would be much more appropriate at a car fire, far too many fire departments are on a collision course with disaster and tragedy, should they encounter a serious high-rise fire. Countless false alarms, along with “good luck” while relying on bad habits, have greatly exacerbated the deadly disease of complacency. District Chief McGrail draws from his 25-years of experience, along with the lessons learned from many other fire service professionals, to provide a foundation for success and safety during high-rise and standpipe operations. This book is a compilation of good fireground habits and the many lessons learned by a man who is truly passionate about firefighting and firefighter safety and survival.

Contents: Foreword • Acknowledgments • Introduction • The firefighting mind-set • The high-rise building • Low-rise, and other standpipe equipped buildings • The standpipe system • The problem defined • Elevator operations • Stairway operations • Hoseline selection • Nozzle selection • The standpipe equipment kit • Engine company operations • Water supply • Truck company operations • Search and rescue operations • Air movement and ventilation • Rapid intervention team (RIT) operations • Command and control • Air support operations • Communications • Preparing for battle

Successful fire service leaders know that a fire department that isn’t moving forward is dying or, at least, in danger of dying. In this second edition, author Mark Wallace succinctly points out that if you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there. Fire departments that know where they are going, understand the environment in which they must operate, and have identified how to get there have the best chance of achieving their goals and desires. These concepts form the foundation of strategic planning. They challenge fire chiefs to escape from the typical operational thinking, to begin strategic thinking, and ultimately to manage their organizations strategically. Readers will learn about the strategic planning process and why each step in the process is critical if the plan is to succeed. More importantly, while the strategic planning process may be thought of as extremely complicated this book removes the mystery that some think of when considering strategic planning by providing timely advice and easy to use tools to assist in the process.

Positive Pressure Attack for Ventilation & Firefighting

ISBN 1-59370-048-2

ISBN13 978-1-59370-048-5

$59.00 us

In the past decades, lightweight building construction methods and the use of manmade materials in construction and furnishings have become more and more common. The time until structural failure can be expected in a fire has been reduced, and firefighters have faced hotter fires that generate high levels of deadly gasses. But the ventilation methods used by modern firefighters have not kept pace with the changes. Positive pressure was first used in the fire service to ventilate a structure after the fire was knocked down. Authors Kriss Garcia, Reinhard Kauffmann and Ray Schelble have taken positive pressure a step further to achieve effective ventilation in coordination with aggressive fire attack, called positive pressure attack (PPA). Properly used PPA allows firefighters great control over the interior environment of a fire building, and starts at the earliest stages of the operation when ventilation can provide the greatest benefit for victims, firefighters, and the structure. With a small investment in equipment and a commitment to training, any fire department can implement PPA at the company level.

Contents: Overview of fireground ventilation • What is effective ventilation • Conventional ventilation methods • Limitations of conventional methods • Positive pressure attack • Understanding positive pressure ventilation • PPV + initial fire attack = PPA = coordinated attack • Precautions for using PPV and PPA • Beyond the basics • PPA and beyond • Introducting PPA to the department • Positive pressure evolutions • A deeper understanding • Final thoughts

This book identifies the key knowledge, skills and abilities required for success in the assessment center promotional process. Assessment centers are widely used by fire departments throughout the country. Unfortunately, many candidates fail to prepare for the test by failing to prepare for the position they seek. Whether aspiring to be a Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief or above, this book gives the reader the tools to establish a personal plan for success in both the test and the position. This book is written in a humorous, matter-of-fact style that makes it easy to understand and retain. The reader is taught to truly prepare for the position by making the mental paradigm shift from test candidate to incumbent officer, which is a very unique and effective method. The book provides the reader with the tools needed to create his/her own plan for success. A personal self-assessment helps the aspiring officer evaluate his/her current status and leadership style. This baseline provides the foundation to get the reader asking questions about real-world scenarios that are mimicked in the testing arena. Now on Audio CD! See page 33 for information. Deliberate training in firefighter rescue and survival is a field that is new to many in the fire service and private industry alike. For those firefighters and company officers assigned to a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), not making the correct split-second decisions—such as immediately recognizing changes in fire behavior or failing to evaluate their level of SCBA air—can result in the loss of the lives of the entire team. In an effort to reduce the number of line-of-duty firefighting injuries and deaths, while at the same time being proactive in the fire service training and leadership, authors Richard Kolomay and Robert Hoff have drawn upon their combined 50+ years of firefighting experience to put together this comprehensive guide.

This book will provide fire service professionals with the necessary communication, leadership, and decision-making tools to operate safely and effectively under stressful conditions, thereby reducing injuries and deaths on the emergency scene. Although the concept of crew resource management has been around since the 1970s, this is the first book to apply CRM to the fire service industry. CRM emphasizes that in most cases technology isn’t the root cause of catastrophe—human error is the culprit. Therefore steps taken to minimize the impact of errors are the keys to reducing the magnitude of the inevitable human failing. This book will be valuable for college classes, and may be used internationally by the fire service, emergency medical services, industrial fire brigades, technical rescue teams, and any other emergency service provider systems.

Hazardous Materials Incidents: Surviving the Initial Response By Steven M. DeLisi

ISBN 1-59370-071-7

ISBN13 978-1-59370-071-3

$49.00 us

First responders who arrive on scene of a hazardous materials incident may be assigned to an engine, ladder truck, rescue, or ambulance with very little sophisticated HAZMAT equipment. Despite these limitations, their actions during the initial response will often set the stage for the success or failure of the entire event. Many incidents start out as minor “routine” events that suddenly escalate when something goes terribly wrong. Perhaps first responders did not anticipate the involvement of hazardous materials in a response to a rear-end collision involving two passenger vehicles, an EMS call at a residence for difficulty breathing, or a trash fire. That is until it was too late! First responders, despite their best intentions, can quickly become part of any hazardous materials problem. The results can be first responders who are killed or seriously injured, or those who suffer devastating illnesses years after exposure to a hazardous material.

Contents: Beyond the rule of thumb • What is a hazardous material? • The role of first responders • Planning for a hazardous materials incident • How not to become part of the problem • Who first responders should call to get help • Documents first responders can use for effective decision making • Identifying the material • Characteristics of containers • Evaluating the environment • Defensive actions for first responders • Highway transportation incidents • Railroad transportation incidents • Fixed facility incidents • “Routine” hazardous materials incidents • Understanding atmospheric monitors • Understanding Class B foam • Managing the initial phase of a hazardous materials incident • Is the incident a crime scene? • Cleanup, recovery, reimbursement, and scene restoration • Appendix A Incident command checklist • Appendix B Hazardous materials warning labels and placards • Appendix C Acronyms and abbreviations • Index
