www.independantstudygroup.com "What Happens When Nothing Happens : unrealised ideas from Montreal" aims to present Montréal based artists, reflecting specifically on the unique processes at work in the preparation of artwork. We aim to explore what happens in between, before, and after projects: unedited ideas, sketches, drawings, thoughts, trials, and everything in the meanwhile. The participating artists vary in media, approaches and art practices, while the creative process often interlace and dialogue in its shapes, mediums and forms. This project explores the realm of the artists' ideas, suspended in a time before their work is resolved and made subject to the structures of reading and power which exist outside the boundaries of the individual. Having reunited here in Göteborg as the Independant Study Group, the idea to invite Montréal based artists came naturally to us as we had both previously worked in Montréal. This curatorial project subsequently evolved from our collective artistic practices and thoughts, enlightened primarily by our inquiry into the creative process through looking at what happens in between projects, when the notion of having a final result is especially ambiguous. In addition to accompanying the June 2009 exhibition of "What Happens when Nothing Happens," held at Galleri Rotor 1 in Göteborg, Sweden, a publication will be launched as a work in and of itself. That is, a publication that takes on the random yet fluid structure of a sketch book in which artists' thoughts, ideas, fluctuations, rhythms and classifications become interlaced and mixed. A book in which lines and colours direct its reading rather than a logical, linear, or alphabetical order. The artists' works are illuminated through access to their drafts, lines, and lists that are part of a grand project or an everyday practice. Many Thanks to Valand School of Fine Arts and Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
