WHAT IS BLUETOOTH • It is a cable replacement technology. • Wireless communication between various devices
within a
small area.
• Used to swap data and synchronize between various devices.
HOW IT WORKS • Bluetooth is based on low cost, short-ranged radio link,
• •
operates in Radio band of 2.4GHz , and provides a range of 10 meters. Connections can be point-to-point or multipoint. Devices connected to each other, they form a personal area network (PAN) called the Pico net.
• Each Pico net can have a master, and up to 7
active and 255 parked slaves. • Different Pico nets are connected using a common device and such networks are called scatter net
FREQUENCY BAND • Diff Frequency ranges for diff countries. • Europe & USA-2400-2483.5 MHz. • Japan-2471-2497 MHz. • Spain-2445-2475 MHz. • France-2445-2483.5 MHz. • SIG Working towards harmonization of frequency.
APPLICATIONS OF BLUETOOTH • • • • •
•
tremendous potential in moving and synchronizing information in a localized setting. The Bluetooth technology connects all your office peripherals wirelessly. Bluetooth allows us to have THREE way phones Automatic Message Delivery. Have automatic synchronization of your desktop, mobile computer, notebook and mobile phone. Upon arriving at your home, the door automatically unlocks for you, the entry way lights come on, and the heat is adjusted to your pre-set preferences
CURRENT STATE OF TECHNOLOGY • • • • • •
Technology has moved fast in terms of standard adoptions with release of chipsets and demo products. Like Ericsson’s Bluetooth headset with 20gms of weight can be used with Ericsson T28, T28 WORLD and R320 cellular phones. Nokia Bluetooth headset with 10 Meters range. Nokia and Fuji film had developed a prototype Mobile Imaging technology. AutoPC is a Windows CE based device that combines a computer with a car radio. Xircom’s Flash product can transfer voice data files at 721 kb/seconds.
COMPETITIVE TECHNOLOGY ALTERNATIVES BLUETOOTH
IrDA
• Omni-directional • Ranges from 10-100
• Bi-directional • Ranges from 20-30 cms • Extended range-2 mts • Can’t penetrate
mts
• Extended range-100 mts
• Can penetrate solids
FUTURE OUTLOOK • Meets basic connectivity in close proximity • More than 1800 manufacturers have joined. • More than 670 million Bluetooth device. • Use of WAP,Smart phones & handheld devices. • Replacing multiple communication ports with single Bluetooth module.
SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT TOOLS • XTNDAccess Bluetooth SDK • Impronto Simulator from Rococo Software • Cambridge Silicon Radio's Development kit • RAPPORE Technology's SDK
BLUETOOTH VERSUS WIRELESS LAN BLUETOOTH
WIRELESS LAN
• Bluetooth ranges up to
• 802.11 ranges Up to
30 feet
• Speed 1-2 MBPS • Less expensive • Started in 2002
200 feet
• 11-54 MBPS • Very expensive • Widespread market
CONCLUSION Though Bluetooth is one of the greatest success in the wireless communication world, still it has not been able to finalize the problem completely.
