An axion background _eld induces tiny oscillating electric and magnetic _elds in an external static magnetic _eld. This signature is used to search for axion dark matter. We use standard quantum _eld theory techniques to obtain an expression for a transition amplitude, from which we identify the classical electromagnetic _elds induced by the background axion _eld. We con_rm previous results, that if the spatial size R of the applied static magnetic _eld is small compared to the axion Compton wavelength _, the induced electric and magnetic _elds are parametrically suppressed by the small numbers (R=_)2 and R=_, respectively, relative to the case when R is larger than _.
