Flowers Colombia has more than 45 years of export experience in the flower chain. It is the first supplier in the United States and the second largest exporter of fresh flowers to the world. It has more than 1,500 varieties of flowers identified and has 7,000 hectares cultivated. Due to the fertile soil and climatic conditions, Colombia has the ideal conditions for the cultivation of a wide variety of flowers and allows the production of them throughout the year. The floriculturists have been concerned because the sector is environmentally and socially responsible, so they have developed programs that help improve the quality of life of workers and their families. Likewise, with the implementation of the Florverde® Sustainable Flowers certification, which is certified with the Global Gap certification, sustainable floriculture is promoted both at company level and in the sector in general.

Industry trends 





The consumption of flowers in the United States is marked mainly by the seasonality of sales, these depend mainly on some special date. Some important days of consumption are Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Christmas, Easter among others where sales increase exponentially. The varieties of flowers most consumed by North Americans are Roses, Pompoms, Carnations, Alstroemerias, Chrysanthemums, Hydrangeas among others. The Global Gap standard for flowers and ornamentals covers the material of plant reproduction, soil and substrates management, fertilizer use, phytosanitary products, harvest, as well as post-harvest treatments and it is important to have certifications of this type.

Flores Colombia tiene más de 45 años de experiencia exportadora en la cadena de flores. Es el primer proveedor de los Estados Unidos y el segundo exportador de flores frescas al mundo. Posee más de 1.500 variedades de flores identificadas y cuenta con 7.000 hectáreas cultivadas. Debido al suelo fértil y condiciones climáticas, Colombia posee las condiciones ideales para el cultivo de una amplia variedad de flores y permite la producción de las mismas durante todo el año. Los floricultores se han preocupado porque el sector sea medioambiental y socialmente responsable, por lo que han desarrollado programas que ayuden a mejorar la calidad de vida de los trabajadores y sus familias. Así mismo, con la implementación de la certificación Florverde® Sustainable Flowers, la cual está homologada con la certificación Global Gap, se promueve la floricultura sostenible tanto a nivel de la compañía como del sector en general.

Tendencias del sector 

El consumo de flores en Estados Unidos está marcado principalmente por la estacionalidad de las ventas, estas dependen principalmente de alguna fecha especial. Algunos días importantes de consumo son el día de San Valentín, día de la madre, navidad, pascua entre otros donde las ventas aumentan exponencialmente.



Las variedades de flores más consumidas por los norteamericanos son las Rosas, Pompones, Claveles, Alstroemerias, Crisantemos, Hortensias entre otros.



La norma Global Gap para flores y ornamentales cubre el material de reproducción vegetal, gestión del suelo y de sustratos, uso de fertilizantes, productos fitosanitarios, cosecha, como también los tratamientos postcosecha y es importante contar con certificaciones de este tipo. Oportunidades
