It’s Time for Downtown to Bloom The First Bloom program, which the DDP started in 2004 with Five Rivers MetroParks, Wegerzyn Gardens MetroParks, and the City of Dayton, has helped enhance our downtown streetscape with beautiful flower planters. Currently there are 250 planters downtown thanks to the program, and Wegerzyn volunteers will soon be getting the planters ready for the season. Businesses and property owners that purchased First Bloom planters have the opportunity to purchase flower refills through the program each year, leaving the dirty work up to the volunteers. This year the planters will be filled with a colorful array of annuals the week of May 14, just in time for Urban Nights. The flower experts have selected hardy, bright flowers that will do well in our downtown environment, including rosy dawn petunias and Sweet Carolyn red potato vine. A special thanks to all of the downtown businesses that participate in the program, our friends at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark and all of the volunteers who help make the First Bloom program a success each year!

FRANKLIN Bank Moving to Kuhns Building Franklin Bank SSB is moving into the remaining space in the Kuhns Building at Fourth and Main Streets. The bank, which specializes in commercial and residential loans, has been in the Dayton area for about two years. Branch manager Steve Baker recently came to the Downtown Dayton Partnership to utilize our free Site Seeker services to find space for their first downtown location. “The DDP’s Site Seeker program was very helpful and I was able to look at several different options downtown,” said Baker. Franklin Bank will be leasing close to 1,200 sq. ft. on the third floor and hopes to be moved in by June. The bank will employ seven people at its new downtown location.
Sandy has been with the Partnership for nearly 15 years, and for the past seven months she has served as the interim president. We believe that Sandy has the necessary skills and the strategic focus that we need for this very important leadership role. She has done an excellent job in this transitional period as interim president, and we are confident that she will continue to be a strong leader and advocate for our downtown. Over the years, many of you have worked with Sandy on numerous project and initiatives, and you know the passion and commitment she has for the Partnership and for our downtown.
Restaurant Ready to Open in Talbott Tower It won’t be long until Italian and American-style dishes will be served up hot in the Talbott Tower. Mamma e Mia Trattoria is getting ready to celebrate their grand opening during Urban Nights on Friday, May 18, and the mother/daughter team is eager to start serving the downtown community. “We have done a lot of work to the space, and we hope to be a place for both workers and residents to enjoy,” said Christina Certo, co-owner of the restaurant. The menu will feature signature Italian dishes along with pizza, salads, soups, sandwiches, and daily specials. Mamma e Mia Trattoria will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for breakfast, lunch and happy hour. Area Red Cross Taking On Additional Responsibilities The Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is becoming a regional network center as part of a proposed reorganization plan. Tom Fodor, chief executive officer of the Dayton Area Chapter, explains that the change means good things for their downtown headquarters. “Becoming a regional network center has made us reaffirm our commitment to downtown,” said Fodor. “We recently made several improvements to our building. The changes could also lead to more education and training sessions and potentially a few additional employees.” The Dayton location will now be responsible for an 11 county region.
Please join with us in congratulating Sandy on her new position, and we hope you will continue to work with her, the DDP Board of Trustees and our entire downtown community to strengthen and grow our downtown.

A Sculpture Walk
Downtown Dayton is bringing the arts to life this summer with the life-like sculptures of world-renowned artist J. Seward Johnson. Twenty of his sculptures will be temporarily installed in key areas throughout downtown for the exhibition. The figures represent people of all ages in dayto-day activities, including a woman walking her dog, children eating an ice cream cone, a window washer, and a man playing a violin. The sculptures have an effect that makes them difficult to distinguish from live people, and the impact they have made in by J. Seward Johnson other communities has been significant in drawing people downtown and introducing them to public art. “I am so excited that the Dayton community is going to have the opportunity to enjoy these life-size sculptures,” said Mayor Rhine McLin. “They are so much fun and I invite everyone to come downtown this summer and check them out.” City Life is presented by the City of Dayton, Montgomery County, the Downtown Dayton Partnership, and Culture Works, with major sponsorship support from WDTNChannel 2 and the Dayton Daily News. Area businesses are helping make the project possible by sponsoring the individual statues. A walking map that highlights all of the statue locations will be available at the beginning of May, as well as information on a photo contest that will take place in conjunction with the exhibit. For more information about the exhibition, visit www.downtowndayton.org.
