Faces & Spaces IN THE LOOP Downtown Residents Bill and Shannon O’Neill-Pote
Bill and Shannon O’Neill-Pote are anything but your ordinary couple. The Potes are downtown residents, owners of the Dugout Deli, hold regular day jobs, administer an interactive website dedicated to Dayton, and serve on an array of boards and committees. They have lived in the Dayton area for five years, and their family will be expanding soon with their first child due in August. The couple moved to a local suburb when they first came to Dayton. After Bill Pote & Shannon O’Neill-Pote two years of not knowing their neighbors, they knew it was time for a change. The couple found what they were looking for when they moved downtown. “A week after we moved in, we knew everyone in the building,” Shannon said. “The Cooper Lofts held parties in community spaces where we met such friendly and social people. We knew instantly we had made the right choice.” This cooperative spirit is what inspired the couple to start their website, dayton.mostmetro.com. The site lists information on things happening downtown and in individual urban neighborhoods. Created in an attempt to silence the claim that Dayton is boring, the couple has received nothing but positive feedback. “Web-development is my profession,” Bill explained. “It’s all about using your talents in ways that are bigger than yourself. It is my hobby Neighbors gather at the Potes’ home in Cooper Lofts. and passion to help create a better and more attractive place to live.” The couple’s interest in the urban community is obvious. Still, the question remained: Will you start a family downtown? “Yes, we feel that the urban environment is a better fit,” Shannon said confidently. “We want to raise our children with an appreciation for diversity, and we see downtown as a hub for culture.” Bill explained that everyone in the building is giddy for the baby to arrive. “We have fifty people trying to throw us a baby shower,” he joked. “We will certainly have our choice of babysitters.” Considering everything on the couple’s agenda, they’re going to need them all.

All of the guest rooms and hallways are getting new carpet, and new tile is being installed on the elevator landings. The hotel has remodeled 10 guest rooms to be in compliance with ADA, and the front desk is also being redone to meet ADA standards. “The renovation will also feature new tables for our bar and banquet seating upgrades, as well as improvements to our mechanical systems,” added Baumgardner.
