Proposal for Restructuring the High School Day School Year 20092010 Reasons for proposal: Provide high school students an opportunity during the regular school day to makeup failed courses, particularly in math. Reduce contact time for high school students to provide later start time for elementary and earlier release time for middle school. Provide high school teachers two planning periods, one of which would be a common plan for faculty meetings, department meetings, IEP Reviews, 504 plans, professional learning communities, staff development, etc. Provide all high school teachers a duty free lunch. The following is a bell schedule to illustrate the proposal. The times can be adjusted based on the outcome of the School Start Time Task Force. Teacher Arrival: 7:40 Student Start Time: 8:35 Period 0: 7:408:35 Teacher Planning Period 1: 8:359:25 First period (50 minutes) Period 2: 9:3010:30 Second period/homeroom (60 minutes: 50 class/10 homeroom) Period 3: 10:3511:25 Third period (50 minutes) Period 4/5: 11:301:20 Block class (85 minutes class plus 25 Min.lunch each semester) Period 6: 1:252:15 Sixth period (50 minutes) Period 7: 2:203:10 Seventh period (50 minutes) Lunches: 11:2511:50 1 st lunch 11:5512:20 2 nd lunch 12:2512:50 3 rd lunch 12:551:20 4 th lunch Teachers who have planning during the 4/5 th period would be assigned a 50 minute plan, a 25 minute lunch, and a 35 minute duty. Only the teachers assigned this planning period would serve duty. A duty roster would be required from each school that shows each teacher’s 35 minutes of duty assignment.
