The subject: the students ( plural ) The verb: spoke The object: creole Adverbial clause of state / condition : before they came to miami. Note: I think the question is false. In this number the the sentence has changed into active sentence, eventhough it still have wrong grammar. The exercice no.6 in passive sentence should be: Creole had been spoken by the students before they came to miami. In the procedure or grammar : PAST PERFECT – BEFORE – PAST TENSE. So according to me the answer ( the active ): the students had spoken creole before they came to miami. 7.meetings are held by our club on Friday.( passive ) The answer: The subject: meetings ( plural ) The verb: are held The object: our club ( plural ) Adverbial clause of time: on Friday. The active: our club hold meetings on Friday.( simple present tense ) 8.Romans no longer speak latin. The answer: The subject: romans ( plural ) The verb: speak The object: latin ( singular ) Note: I think it have wrong grammar. The sentence should be: Romans speak latin no longer . ( simple present tense ) 9.the key is always forgotten by my roommate.(passive) The answer: The subject: the key ( singular ) The verb: is always forgotten The object: my roommate ( singular ) The active: my roommate always forget the key. (simple present tense) 10. my application had already been filled out by the time I was called.(pasive) The answer: The subject: my application (singular). The verb: had already been filled out. The object: I was called. ( adverbial clause of state / condition ). Preposition: by the time. The active: by the time I was called my application had already filled out. ( preposition ) ( past perfect )

ESSAY EXERCISE 2 : Correct these student sentences from TOEFL test essays. Find passive and past participle errors. 1.I was grown up in the countryside. The answer: I think exercise number 1( one) it’s correct. So we should not change the sentence. The answer : I was grown up in the countryside. 2.I have spend a lot of time with only one or two close friends. The answer: It’s not correct: Spend should be: Spent ( past participle ). The TOEFL should be: Have been spent. The correct sentence should be: a lot of time have been spent by me with only one or two close friends.

3.Traditional schools are base on the idea that learning with a teacher is best. The answer: It’s not correct: Base on should be: based on ( past participle) The TOEFL should be : Are based on The correct sentence should be: The idea that learning with a teacher is best is based on traditional schools. 4.Cities where universities are founding usually have a higher standard of living. The answer : It’s not correct: founding should be: founded ( past participle ). The TOEFL should be: are being founded. The correct sentence should be: Cities where universities are being founded usually have a higher standard of living. 5.Only good students have admitted to universities in my country, so many students don’t have a chance to improve their lives. The answer: It’s not correct: have admitted. The TOEFL should be: have been admitted. The correct sentence should be: Only good students have been admitted to universities in my country, so many students don’t have a chance to improve their lives.

6.Changes are making to my university. The answer: It’s not correct: making should be: made ( past participle ). The TOEFL should be: are being made. The correct sentence should be: Changes are being made to my university. 7.If a new university built in my hometown, students will have god and bad experiences. The answer: It’s not correct: the sentence has wrong grammar. The TOEFL should be: the sentence talk about ( GRAMMAR ) If Clause or Conditional sentences, especially THE PRESENT UNREAL CONDITION. It should be: Was built Not built. And it should be: Would have Not Will have. The correct sentence should be: If a new university was built in my hometown, students would have god and bad experiences. ( jika sebuah universitas baru di bangun di kampung halaman saya, pelajar-pelajarakan memperoleh pengalaman-pengalaman baik dan buruk) But if we talk about passive sentence it should be: If a new university was built in my hometown, god and bad experiences will be had by students. (jika sebuah universitas baru di bangun di kampung halaman saya, pengalaman-pengalaman baik dan buruk akan di peroleh oleh para pelajar).

8.england is used english. The answer: It’s not correct: the sentence has wrong meaning. Because English is language and England is a Country. The TOEFL should be: English as the subject and Englad as the object. The correct sentence should be: English is used by England. 9.Medical schools and dental schools are applied to high level students. The answer: It’s not correct: I think the sentence has wrong meaning. The sentence should be: High level students are applied to Medical schools and dental schools.

10.If I study with a teacher, I can be understood my problems. The answer: It’s not correct: I think the sentence has wrong grammar. The sentence talk about (Grammmar) If clause or conditional sentences. especially THE PRESENT UNREAL CONDITION. It should be: Was studied Not Study. And Could be understood Not Can be understood. The sentence shold be: If I was studied with a teacher, I could be understood my problems. ( jika saya di ajarkan oleh/dengan seorang guru, saya akan dapat memahami masalah saya). But if we talk about passive sentence it should be: If I am studied with a teacher, my problems can be understood by me. ( jika saya di ajarkan oleh/dengan seorang guru,masalah saya akan dapat di pahami oleh diri saya).
