Name: _____________________________________________ November 4th, 2008 ELECTION DAY

Period _____

(the first Tuesday after the First Monday of November during an election year) It is Election Day and Americans across our great country are heading to the poll. One of the goals of this class is to get you to understand that voting is available to all but you have a duty as a citizen to do more that mindlessly check boxes but rather make educated and informed decisions. We have discussed the Presidential Candidates/Campaigns (the two main parties) as well as the California and local Propositions and now it is the time for you to decide. Directions: Since you are in American Government it is a Test (40 points). A separate class copy of the official ballot for the University City/Clairemont Community will be given to you. DO NOT WRITE ON IT. NOTE: The elections for Senate, State and California House of Representatives, and school board are included on the ballot. I know that we did not talk about these in class so you are not required to cast a vote. Grading Scale (Total 40 points): -Presidential Vote (2 points) and your reasoning (6 points). Your vote is simply checking the box on the ballot. Your reasoning is your justification of why you voted in that way and your response should take the form of 1-3 written paragraphs on this page. If you are UNDECIDED in the Presidential election you need to tell me why in 2-3 paragraphs. -Proposition votes (12 state and 5 local) and your reasoning (on 10 of the Propositions you cast a vote on). Your vote is simply checking the box on the ballot. Your reasoning is your justification of why you voted in that way and should take the form of 2-3 sentences on the ballot near the Proposition. Also if you are UNDECIDED on a proposition you need to tell me why in 2-3 sentence to get credit for that proposition. -5 Points for voting on or before Election Day. When you vote, if you go to the polls after Election Day your vote is invalid. Here I am demonstrating the importance of getting to the voting booth on Election Day or getting an absentee ballot if you are going to be unable to vote in person.
