Creating a Successful Online Learning Experience Jessica Miles A lot of my online instructions stayed the same, but I used this document to further discuss some plans and outlines. 1. Friendly Learning Resource: My plan is to have an introduction and about me section of the online course so students can get to know me. I will also have a contact me section where students can find my information to contact me at anytime. I will have hours listed that I am available and will reassure students that I answer back phone calls/ e-mails quickly and they may contact me anytime with questions. The website will be inviting and use kid-friendly language. 2. Clear instructions: Students will complete a lesson a day. The lessons are all outlined the same. The instructions have stayed the same from the outline in Week 3. Each Lesson: - Fluency Warm-up - Application Problem - Concept (Lesson) - Problem Set (Practice) - Debrief(Discussion/Check for Understanding) - Exit Ticket (Formative) - Homework (All parts of the lesson will be completed online!) 3. Resources: We will be using a lot of online resources in this course, so a working computer and Internet is required. You will need three textbooks from Eureka Math Third Grade Module 4. The book titles are: - Eureka Math Module 4 Third Grade Fluency Practice - Eureka Math Module 4 Third Grade Student Edition - Eureka Math Module 4 Third Grade Homework You will also need to make sure you have an updated version of powerpoint updated on your computer to have access to all of the lesson presentations and a working email. It is also optional to buy attribute blocks to use as manipulatives (recommended), but you can also use an online version. Online help can be found at:
https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-3-mathematics-module-4 4. Assessments: The mid-module assessment and final assessment are already outlined in the book with rubrics and will be printed out prior to them given on the scheduled weeks. The exit tickets are another grade given as an assessment and will be made online/printed. 5. Ensure each lesson content is taught: To ensure each lesson content is taught, I am following the objectives that are outlined for each lesson. I have included all components of each lesson and I am checking for understanding through an online quiz at the end of the lesson.
6. Workload: The expected workload aligns with what is expected out of students whether completing an online course or face-to-face. Each lesson takes approximately an hour to complete and student’s complete one lesson a day. The homework is never more than 5 problems and the homework will be graded at the end of the week. By completing a lesson a day, students will finish all of Module 4 and take the final module assessment after 4 weeks. 7. Tailor the lesson: To ensure students are learning content that will appear in the assessments, I will post our lesson objectives daily on our website. I will tailor our fluency warm-ups to what students need after viewing their exit tickets from the previous lessons. 8. Encourage gifted students: I will post extension activities that are found online through the Eureka Math website and encourage students to participate in all online activities. I will create extended projects/ activities that students may do at the end of each week. Students may also submit videos of themselves practicing a concept to help teach others for extra credit throughout the course. 9. Students progress: I will ensure students progress by providing them quick feedback on the assignments they are completing. I will have daily assignments that are submitted to me so I can check for understanding/misconceptions. I will also have students answer discussions questions on a blog where students can interact and collaborate with one another. 10. Virtual Class: I will hold virtual class sessions for each of the concept development parts of the lesson. Students will watch me while also following along with the powerpoint. Students may interact with me during the lesson. I will leave time at the end of each lesson to talk about the discussion/debrief questions I would like students to answer. I will leave time for students to ask me question before going off the work on their individual activities. If no questions are asked, I will ask the debrief questions at the end of the lesson to get students talking and thinking about what they have learned. Students will take these responses and create a discussion post online. 11. Student Participation: I will use a messenger system during the virtual online video portion of the lesson. This way, students can privately type a message to me if they are having trouble or cannot answer a question presented on video. I will have daily requirements such as, the online exit ticket, that must be completed before starting the next lesson. I will be able to hold students accountable for their learning and track participation. I will also have students answer questions on a discussion blog. 12. Overdue Assignments: Students will have by the end of the week Friday at 9:00pm to turn in all of their weekly assignments for no point deductions. Beyond Friday, assignments will be marked overdue. Students can make-up these late assignments, but will still receive a 10% deduction toward that assignment. 13. Student’s Quality of Work: To model expectations for quality of work, I will provide students with examples. I will provide students with feedback daily so they are able to clearly see the expectations for the course. If an assignment is not done to the course expectations, the student will be asked to improve the assignment to receive full points.
14. Open Book Policy: The math textbook is a resource where we practice the content being learned that day, so I am more than willing to allow students to use their textbooks as a resource for their online assessments. 15. Retakes: Students are allowed to take any assessment over again (just 1 attempt) no matter what their score is, in order to improve their score. The two scores will be averaged together. Students may retake online assessments and paper assessments at any time. 16. Grading: Grading policies are outlined on the course syllabus.
Homework @ 5 points each x 16 lessons= 80 points Exit Tickets @ 2 points each x 16 lessons= 32 points Mid-Module Assessment @ 75 points x 1= 75 points End-Module Assessment @ 75 points x1= 75 points Total Points= 262 points I will be posting grades for homework and exit tickets weekly. The grades for the module assessments will happen within 48 hours of taking the assessment in week 2 and week 4. I will notify students if any other activities are graded and post them as well.
