EDEN COURT THEATRE SEPTEMBER – DECEMBER 2009

WELCOME

CONTENTS

WELCOME TO YOUR BRAND NEW EDEN COURT BROCHURE FOR SEPTEMBER – DECEMBER 2009. There are so many brilliant shows coming in the next few months that it’s been quite a challenge to actually fit everything in to the space available! As always, I’ve tried to put together a programme which appeals as widely as possible. Whether you are a regular theatre-goer or someone who pops in occasionally, I’m sure you’ll find something in the next 60 pages that tickles your fancy! September sees us welcome another brilliant musical – the West End version of the cult 80’s movie, Little Shop of Horrors (P4&5). It’s a big stage production with a giant man-eating plant, an armful of memorable songs, and a star-studded cast including Alex Ferns (Evil Trevor from Eastenders!). 2009 is Scotland’s ‘Year of Homecoming’ and we will be holding a number of brilliant events throughout October in celebration, including a quite simply stunning version of Macbeth (P6) performed outdoors by visionary Polish theatre company Teatr Biuro Podrozy. When this show appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2007 it gained rave reviews, multiple awards, and left audiences speechless – it’s not to be missed. Eden Court’s fabulous family panto makes a welcome return; this year we’ll be treated to the magical story of Jack and the Beanstalk (P8&9). The show is written by the BAFTA award winning creators of The Tweenies, produced by one of the UK’s brightest panto companies and is sure to be one of the best pantos to grace the Empire Stage in many years. I haven’t had time to mention that we’ll also be joined by the brilliantly entertaining Ennio Marchetto (P10), the sublimely talented national companies Scottish Ballet (P14) and Scottish Opera (P32&33), one of the leading lights of the Scottish dance scene in David Hughes Dance (P12) and we’ll also see a return visit to Inverness from the amazing London Community Gospel Choir (P11). I hope you’ll agree that this could be our best season yet – Enjoy! Best wishes,

Colin Marr Theatre Director

Down and out Skid Row floral assistant Seymour becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood… Before long “Audrey II” turns out to be an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers Seymour fame and fortune as long as he keeps feeding the plant’s growing appetite… but as Audrey II’s hungry demands increase, all that Seymour holds dear is threatened as the plant’s sinister agenda for global domination is unveiled…. This is a wickedly funny, family-friendly stage musical written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (who redefined the animated musical genre with Disney favourites The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Enchanted).Featuring an incredible animatronic man-eating plant, this critically acclaimed new production is bristling with great songs and laugh-out-loud lyrics. MACBETH – WHO IS THAT BLOODIED MAN?

SEAT PRICES MON 16 (EVE) / THU 19 (MAT) £12.50

MON 19 OCT | 20.00 CAR PARK We are delighted to be involved in the celebrations for Scotland’s Year of Homecoming. As part of our larger programme of special Homecoming events (full details on P34-39) we have been able to bring this fantastic version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth to the Highlands for one night only. A real gem of modern outdoor theatre, this show garnered universal rave reviews when it first hit Scotland during 2007’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Who Is That Bloodied Man? tells of human fate determined by destiny and inner necessity. Portraying the world 0-3world of nightmares, during the horror of war, the the world in blood, where it is legal to betray, to 3-6 intrigue, to kill. It reminds you of the tragic consequence, that 2+ continued, and crime once committed will be man’s death is not man’s end – he comes 4+ back as fear, remorse and obsession. Using their trade-mark stilts, fire and 5+ music, Polish theatre company, Teatr Biuro Podrozy deliver an unforgettable 7+ re-telling of the ‘Scottish play’ unlike any you will have seen before. Prepare 8-12 yourself for Macbeth – Polish style… with stilts, motorbikes and lots of 9+ smoke!

ENNIO MARCHETTO

LONDON COMMUNITY GOSPEL CHOIR

MON 28 SEP | 20.00 EMPIRE THEATRE

TUE 24 NOV | 19.30 EMPIRE THEATRE In 1982 Rev Bazil Meade, Lawrence Johnson, Delroy Powell and John Francis formed the first concert gospel choir in Britain. 27 years later, the London Community Gospel Choir’s popularity just keeps growing! Trying to fit LCGC into a ‘box’ is virtually impossible. They create dynamic melodies with rich harmonies whether they are performing as an octet or as a 30-strong choir. LCGC is known for their funky gospel flair, swing-beat, R'n'B, traditional and soulful arrangements, with invigorating choreography and vocal gymnastics.

Ennio Marchetto 'the living cartoon' takes the art of mimicry and lightning-fast quick change into a new realm... The original quick change artist, he introduced the art of origami into theatrical magic. His screamingly funny and wildly entertaining solo performance features a whirlwind of superb paper costumes and split second transformations. Ennio uses his dynamic physical comedy and ingenious costumes to magically morph into parodies of more than 50 of the world's most recognisable cultural icons. Set to a brilliant soundtrack of hits, the highly original show includes a star-studded line up from the sublime to the ridiculous... everyone from Mona Lisa to Boy George, Celine Dion to Ozzie Osbourne, Dolly Parton to Amy Winehouse, and many more.

Prepare yourself for an evening of inspirational and uplifting popular hits combined with high energy choreography, power vocals and exceptional musical arrangements. A true Eden Court favourite, tickets for this aurally stunning event will be in short supply, so snap yours up quick! Visionary dance proponents David Hughes and Al Seed reunite to present a stunning and radically re-engineered version of their contemporary and visually shocking version of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale The Masque of the Red Death. Barricaded in his opulent abbey-mansion a prince entertains a party of revellers whilst the world outside teeters on the brink of apocalypse. Weaving a multitude of dance traditions with extreme physical theatre this collaboration is a true horror show for the stage. David Hughes is one of the UK’s most acclaimed dancers. He has worked with many of the UK’s most notable companies including DV8, Rambert (who visited Eden Court in March), Phoenix, London Contemporary Dance Theatre and Siobhan Davies. Al Seed is Artistic Director of the 'Conflux' project, Creative Associate of The Arches and was the winner of a Fringe First 2004, and a Herald Angel 2008 for 'The Fooligan'. www.alseed.net www.davidhughesdance.co.uk

A satirical but affectionate portrait of Glasgow which is vivid and telling and quite brilliantly performed

You find a letter. It’s not yours. Do you read it? Christine Devaney, together with an outstandingly talented company, presents bold, beautiful and charged dance theatre. Found explores the fragile depths of human emotion as one person’s reality is deeply affected by a life imagined. Found will be performed to a specially devised live music soundtrack. Christine Devaney trained at London Contemporary Dance School and has been performing, choreographing and teaching for almost twenty years. She was a founding member of Dundee Rep. Dance Company (currently Scottish Dance Theatre) and for nine years performed with and was associate director with V-tol Dance Company.

With time on his hands he wanders the streets of his past and is swept up in the ensuing roller coaster of memories and emotions. Twenty-one years after this gem of a show first played to full houses and immense public acclaim, Highlands based plan B have reunited the original creative team to bring A Wee Home From Home to a new generation. Performed by Michael Marra and Frank McConnell, the duo create a double act full of warmth and charm with undertones of menace. Using an eclectic mix of raw live music, inspired, high-octane choreography and powerful theatricality, the show opens Scotland to its own wounds while celebrating a vibrant and indomitable spirit with pathos and a huge dose of humour. www.planbcreative.org Director GERRY MULGREW Choreography FRANK MCCONNELL Music MICHAEL MARRA Design KAREN TENNENT Lighting JEANINE DAVIES

RUBIES Choreography: George Balanchine Music: Igor Stravinsky

WORKWITHINWORK Choreography: William Forsythe Music: Luciano Berio

IN LIGHT AND SHADOW Choreography: Krzysztof Pastor Music: Johann Sebastian Bach Renowned for its versatility, and applauded for its exciting, awardwinning repertoire, Scottish Ballet, Scotland’s national dance company, marks its 40th anniversary with a triple bill that captures perfectly the chic style of a company whose powerful athleticism and incredible personality continues to attract world-wide acclaim. Created by legendary choreographer and founder of New York City Ballet George Balanchine, Rubies was first performed by Scottish Ballet in 2005 and makes a welcome return to the Company’s repertoire for its 40th anniversary. Glamorous, witty and exciting, Rubies is one of Balanchine’s most delectable creations, featuring dazzling bejewelled costumes and the angular, jazz-tinged music of Igor Stravinsky. Choreographed by William Forsythe, Workwithinwork is a new addition to Scottish Ballet’s repertoire. Performed to the beautiful slow-building

arch of Berio’s Duetti for two violins, the choreography starts graceful and winding, before branching out in ever-increasing complexity. Making its much anticipated return to the stage is Krzysztof Pastor’s celebrated In Light and Shadow. Beginning with a delicate, reflective duet to the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, the piece twists and turns into a rich tapestry of explosive solos, duets and ensemble work set to Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite. www.scottishballet.co.uk

OUTSIDE IN Scottish Ballet’s Outside In offers a unique opportunity to get that little bit closer to Scotland’s national dance company. Delivered from the theatre stage, Outside In uses excerpts from the pieces, elements of sets, props and lighting and interviews with the artistic team, orchestra members and dancers to explore all aspects of the performance. A magical doll’s house, an evil governess, and a nutcracker doll who may just be a handsome prince in disguise - this winter, prepare to enter a magical new world… Following on from the hugely successful productions of Cinderella and The Sleeping Beauty comes a revival of Artistic Director Ashley Page’s The Nutcracker, a sweet yet deliciously sharp take on ETA Hoffmann’s original story Nutcracker and the King of Mice. One Christmas Eve, Marie hears the story of a brave nutcracker that saves a princess from a horrible curse, and as she sleeps, she is transported into a surreal dream world where she must learn to fend for herself and discover the secret of true love. This fresh and vivid retelling of the famous Christmas story features stunning sets and costumes from international designer Antony McDonald, breathtaking choreography, Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous score played live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra and the phenomenally talented, passionate dancers of Scotland’s national dance company. Following last year’s hugely successful production of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Sunset Song, His Majesty’s Theatre return once more to Eden Court with a brand new interpretation of Neil Gunn’s epic tale of the land and sea, a story of love lost and found again The Silver Darlings .

GRASSIC GIBBON Scaramouche Jones is a comical, poignant and moving one-man performance about the remarkable life of a 100 year old circus clown. Making full use of an evocative and imaginative set, and with an originally composed soundtrack, this is a production that will stay with you long after you’ve left your seat…. Within the makeshift dressing room of a circus tent,0-3 Scaramouche Jones re-lives the incredible chapters of his colourful past, vividly bringing to life the people,3-6 places and events that shaped his destiny. 2+

Scaramouche was always fated to be a clown…and from 4+ his birth, his life was to be a vivid odyssey of extraordinary 5+ adventures… Now, as the champagne corks fly on 7+ millennium eve, his hundredth birthday, 8-12 Scaramouche is about to give his final performance. 9+

MON 09 & TUE 10 NOV | 19.30 EMPIRE THEATRE This recital of a new play by author and broadcaster Jack Webster, follows Scottish writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon through his struggle for recognition in his youth to his successful years and premature death at just 34. Produced by His Majesty’s Theatre, it tells the story of J Leslie Mitchell – otherwise known as Lewis Grassic Gibbon – from his early years in Auchterless and Arbuthnott through to his later life in Welwyn Garden in Hertfordshire. A prolific author both in his own right and using his pseudonym, he wrote a total of 17 books on subjects as diverse as archaeology and exploration. 0-3 However, it is as Grassic Gibbon that he is best known and in particular for his trilogy A Scots Quair – Sunset 3+ Song, Cloud Howe and Grey Granite. An adaptation on the trilogy was a huge success on BBC TV in the 1970s 3-6 starring Vivien Heilbron in the central role of Chris Guthrie. This production maps out Mitchell’s life and tells 2+ of his school years, his struggle for recognition and his success in his productive later years. 4+

Set in the period following the Highland Clearances, The Silver Darlings tells the tale of a community forced from the land to the coast and their struggle to find a new living from the sea along the north coast of Scotland. The story follows Catrine from her early life with her first love and husband Tormad; through her anguish when he is taken at sea by a press gang the subsequent years of torture not knowing whether he is dead or alive. This hugely poignant tale is directed by Kenny Ireland, designed by Hayden Griffin, is dramatised by award winning playwright Peter Arnott, and has a brand new score written by renowned composer Matthew Scott. This timeless tale will be told by a brilliantly talented ensemble of actors, including Inverness’ very own Jimmy Chisholm (last seen here in NTS’ Be Near Me) and Ann Louise Ross (Ma from Sunshine on Leith, and Peer’s Mother from Peer Gynt)

British-born Andrew Manze has established a reputation as one of the most stimulating and energetic conductors of his generation. Here he opens and closes the programme with two works by Brahms. The Tragic Overture, composed in 1880, has no particular drama in mind, but perhaps evokes the mood of high tragedy in general. The shadow of Beethoven loomed heavily over Brahms, resulting in the 15 year gestation of his First Symphony, only finished in his early forties - but what a masterpiece. To complete the evening Stella McCracken, principal oboe with the BBC SSO, plays Mozart’s sublime Oboe Concerto.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra makes a welcome return to the Highlands with a programme of melodious, big-hearted masterpieces, directed by popular Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer. The programme opens with Haydn's March for the Royal Society of Musicians, before bright young Latvian violinist Baiba Skride takes the solo in Mozart's Concerto No 5 in A 'Turkish'. Brahms jolly Serenade No 1 closes this concert of folk influence music. www.sco.org.uk There will be a pre-performance talk at 19.15

RSNO Principal Horn David McClenaghan takes centre stage to perform Mozart’s delightful Fourth Horn Concerto, and then the RSNO strings will take a moment to shine with Elgar’s charming and beautiful Serenade.

The Orchestra then unites again under the baton of 23-year old Thai musical sensation Trisdee na Patalung, Resident Conductor of Bangkok Opera, for Beethoven’s light-hearted Symphony No8, bringing the evening to a fittingly joyful conclusion.

Jonathan Morton and Clio Gould, violins and RSAMD strings Scottish Ensemble celebrate the opening of their 40th anniversary Scottish Season with a programme that ranges from the baroque to the twentieth century. We welcome the return of Clio Gould, who joins Jonathan Morton in one of JS Bach’s most famous works, the Concerto in D minor for 2 violins. Clio is also the soloist in Berio’s Corale, written in 1975 and an homage to JS Bach and the violin. Senior students from the Royal Academy of Music and Drama will join the Ensemble ‘Side by Side’ in Vaughan Williams’ deeply spiritual work for double string orchestra, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and Tippett’s exuberant and joyful Concerto for double string orchestra.

Curated by John Woolrich, composer The Scottish Ensemble continue their tradition of ‘Christmas with a twist’ in this candlelit concert. Composer John Woolrich has curated a special programme to frame his new work for the Scottish Ensemble, ‘Capriccio’. The programme opens with the Prelude to Capriccio from Richard Strauss’s opera, a work of searingly intense emotion. The second half of the concert is devoted to Schoenberg’s bittersweet and gorgeous Verklarte Nacht. These pieces frame the Scottish première of John Woolrich’s new piece, and as a 40th Anniversary gift to the Ensemble, John is arranging a group of Schubert songs for the full forces of the Ensemble. www.scottishensemble.co.uk There will be a pre-performance talk at 19.15

Rossini’s quick-witted, independent leading lady is a thoroughly modern heroine. The sparkling music and energetic melodies, arias and ensembles will keep audiences entertained from start to finish, as acclaimed theatre director Colin McColl takes a bold new look at this comic masterpiece. International playboy Mustafa is bored with his wife. He plans to marry her off so that he can take an Italian wife. When the young and gorgeous (and conveniently Italian) Isabella arrives on the scene, Mustafa is smitten. But feisty Isabella proves to be quite a match, and then the games really begin…

Scottish mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill, who the Guardian called a ‘bright star’ for her performance as Rosina in Scottish Opera’s 2007 production of The Barber of Seville, sings Isabella. New Zealand Opera Music Director Wyn Davies conducts. Story and music by Mark Sheridan

Alexander Gunn left his home in Durness in 1853 and found himself en route to Australia, one of the many tens of thousands of Scots who left these shores during the Highland Clearances. These journeys were long and hazardous and often ended in tragedy. 155 years later a letter turns up in Durness addressed to his family descendant, Iain Anderson, postmarked - Bendigo, Australia. This is the story of Alexander's journey narrated by Iain Anderson with historical and environmental commentary from Michael Russell, MSP and Minister for Culture and Gaelic introductions from Hugh-Dan MacLennan. The piece also analogises the journey of the Arctic Terns from Scotland to the Antarctic and ultimately, Australia. The story maps their journey and highlights the decline in their status in the face of climate and environmental changes. A newly composed musical suite runs throughout the piece to illustrate and support the narrative. Written, composed and directed by Scottish composer and academic Mark Sheridan. Dick Gaughan was brought up immersed in the musical traditions and culture of the Gaels. He has been a professional musician and singer for more than 30 years, has been playing guitar since the age of 7 and made his first solo album in 1971 (No More Forever). In short, Dick has been at the cutting edge of Scottish music for almost four decades.
