DIRECTOR’S INTRODUCTION Welcome, To the 2009 Inverness Book Festival. It’s been an exciting first year in the Director’s hot seat and I hope you like what I’ve lined up. I’ve worked hard with the Eden Court team to bring together a programme of events and activities that is as popular as it is diverse, so in the pages of this brochure you’ll find everything from biography to sport, and from eating & drinking to history, plus everything in between. We’ll be entertained and enthralled with visits from Scottish authors such as Rebus’ creator, Ian Rankin, Fife’s very own Barbara Dickson and Mrs Rab C Nesbit, Elaine C Smith… it’s been a tough task whittling down the long list of guests, and so I do hope that you’ll be as happy as we are with the results. There’s also a full programme of brilliant things for little readers and their families, including a full day of storytelling. I’ve spent a lot of my life immersed in the book world, most recently as manager of one of the local bookshops, but most importantly, I just love books! It doesn’t matter if you read one book a month, or one a week – what matters is that you let books into your life! I’d like to thank all of the bookshops that are working with us this year, especially Waterstones, who have helped us secure some of the most popular authors in Inverness Book Festival’s history. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without any of you. Thanks also go to Jason Rose, for handing his baby over to me; to Eden Court staff, for their time and patience and to all of you, the readers of the Highlands. I hope you’ll enjoy the line up, and remember I love to hear from you, so get in touch with any ideas and suggestions for next year. Happy reading,

Brid McKibben, Book Festival Director

MACLEAN ROOM / 18.30 The Shetland Quartet, with Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez at the helm, is attracting all kinds of attention…and rightly so. Perez makes mistakes, asks the wrong questions, is more like a priest than a hard-bitten detective and has a strained relationship with Inverness HQ. He is, in short, believable. From Raven Black’s chilling bloodstained snow in the heart of winter, to White Night’s mysterious summer-time happenings. The series continues with the gripping, Red Bones, and will be followed by the release next year of the hugely anticipated, Blue Lightning.

CRIME THE 3 CITY CRIME PANEL with ALEX GRAY, IAN RANKIN AND STUART MACBRIDE

Alex Gray’s crime busting duo, psychological profiler Solly Brightman, and DCI Bill Lorimer, solve the most gruesome of Glasgow murders. Her latest book, Glasgow Kiss, brings matters close to home for DCI Lorimer when he’s faced with the stress of his wife playing a crucial role in the murder investigation. DS Logan McRae puts Aberdeen firmly on the murder map in Stuart MacBride’s books. Stuart has been steadily collecting awards since Cold Granite came out in 2005, not bad for a self appointed bearded sex-god. An Adelaide reviewer described him as ‘Ian Rankin on speed’. His new book, Blind Eye, takes in the Polish community in Aberdeen. Alex and Stuart will be joining Ian Rankin to talk about writing crime in their home cities.

STORYTELLING JESS SMITH & STUART MCHARDY

KIDS (0 – 3 YRS) TALES ‘N’ TAILS

LA SCALA CINEMA / 13.00

MACLEAN ROOM / 11.15

Jess Smith was brought up travelling the roads of Scotland. Through her autobiographical trilogy Jessie’s Journey, Tales from the Tent and Tears for a Tinker, Jess has relived and shared these times with a colourful and passionate voice. Written originally in her ‘cant’ language and broad Scots, it had to be translated to English before it could be published. Listening to Jess’ stories in person captures the atmosphere of those times for any of us interested in life beyond the margins of society. Jess occasionally breaks into song which Celtic women through the ages have found easier to express their inner thoughts.

Do you have a tail?

Stuart McHardy is a writer, storyteller and lecturer. His interest in Scotland’s past has led him to re-evaluate the role of the oral tradition in gaining a clearer picture of our history. He believes that while history is written by winners, story flourishes amongst history’s survivors. As well as several books on Scottish History, he has delved into Highland cattle raiding traditions in School of the Moon and tales of the Scottish clans in The Well of Heads. His new book Tales of Loch Ness takes the limelight away from Nessie and tells some of the less well know tales from our best know landmark. Stuart is also likely to burst into song so this event should be a lively one.

Emma’s book The Hydro Boys, Pioneers of renewable energy is well known to Highland readers. Her new book The Environmental History of Scotland to 1860 summarizes the course of human interaction with Scotland’s non-human environment. WEDNESDAY 7 OCT

NEIL GUNN TRUST LECTURE 2009 BURNS, GUNN AND THE SCOTTISH WIDER WORLD ONETOUCH THEATRE / 19.00 In this year of ‘Homecoming’, the Neil Gunn Trust thought it appropriate not just to look back to our roots, vital as that is, but outwards to the ‘wider world’, where, over many generations, Scots have set off to explore and settle in countries all over the globe. Owen Dudley Edwards is a Burns’ expert. He is an Honorary Fellow of the School of History and Classics at the University of Edinburgh, where he was Reader until his retirement in 2005. He is also Reader at the National Library of Scotland, a good source of information for the many books he has written. He was for many years a regular guest on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Round Britain Quiz’. It is also worth mentioning that among his many talents he is a gifted orator, a rare attribute in these days of ‘sound bites’. Owen Dudley Edwards is a professor of history and a writer and broadcaster. He is also the general editor of the ‘Oxford Sherlock Holmes’ series, and is a recognised expert on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Neil Gunn, P. G. Wodehouse, Oscar Wilde and many aspects of American and Irish history. His new book shows how British Children’s Fiction in the Second World War had an immense effect on how they came of age as they faced the new world. As a guest of the Neil Gunn Trust, Owen will be discussing how Neil’s books had an effect on children when they were first published and also the affect they still have. The Neil Gunn Trust wishes to acknowledge sponsorship from Sandstone Press, support from Inverness Book Festival and, through the Highland Culture Programme, support from Highland Council. FICTION KATIE FFORDE

CHAIR: JIM MILLER MACLEAN ROOM / 20.00

CHAIR: ERICA MUNRO EMPIRE THEATRE / 20.30

Angus is a former naval officer, underwater archaeologist, museum curator and pirate expert! He has written over 30 naval and military books and also makes frequent television appearances as a piracy expert or historical “talking head” in both America and Britain.

Reading a Katie Fforde book has been described as like sipping on champagne cocktails - they are so effervescent, bubbly and fun.

His latest book, There Was a Soldier, tells of Scottish soldiers who fought in Europe, America, Africa, India and the Far East. The book follows the soldiers from 1707 right up to the first Gulf War. It includes collections of letters, lyrics of songs and poems composed by the soldiers themselves, highland anecdotes, extracts from official reports and typescripts of interviews. Angus says it has been a humbling privilege to have had access to such personal, poignant and often funny documents. He tells of soldiers who after 46 years can talk of the minute details of kindness shown to him in the Spanish Colonies in Buenos Aires to a cavalier commander who didn’t believe in hiding in doorways in Aden but rather marching straight down the street to let the enemy know he was coming. This is the gritty, real-life story of the Scottish soldier, told in his own words. Angus’ words knitting these extracts together show a tremendous pride in what Scottish soldiers have done and how they have behaved both in victory and defeat.

ABOUT THE CHAIR Jim Miller is a full time writer from Caithness. His previous books are The Dam Builders, The North Atlantic Front, Inverness, Scapa, Swords for hire, Brimster tales and his new book The Forresters is published in September. SEAT PRICES / FULL PRICE £7.00 / REDUCED RATE £5.00 EDEN COURT FRIENDS £1.00 OFF!

As it turns out, Dermot is maddening, temperamental, and up to his ears in a nasty case of writer’s block. On top of all this, he’s also infuriatingly attractive and wants to add Laura to his list of conquests…

BIOGRAPHY ROGER HUTCHINSON – WALKING TO AMERICA

STORYTELLING (KIDS 8-12) LARI DON

CHAIR: SHARON BLACKIE MACLEAN ROOM / 18.30

ONETOUCH THEATRE / 11.00

Roger is an author and freelance journalist based in Raasay. His first writing was on sport, Camanachd: The story of Shinty, and he has since written about inspirational characters in the highlands and Islands; Lord Leverhulme in The Soap Man and Calum MacLeod in Calum’s Road. Calum Macleod single-handedly built a two-mile road from his croft on the Isle of Raasay over a period of 20 years in the hope that new generations of people would return to live in the North of the island. The book has even inspired a community in the Gambia to build a similar road to their village to enable them to reach it in the rainy season. In tribute, this road will also be named ‘Calum’s Road’ Roger’s new book Walking to America relates the story of his family’s extraordinary odyssey-cumpilgrimage 120 years ago from Liverpool to Arizona and back again, in search of a new life and of a miracle doctor who could cure the blindness of one of their number. Roger will speak about his work and the many people who travelled across the Atlantic to seek their fortune.

ABOUT THE CHAIR Sharon Blackie is a published author The Long Delirious Burning Blue and co- founder of Ullapool based publishers Two Ravens Press. SEAT PRICES FULL PRICE £7.00 / REDUCED RATE £5.00 EDEN COURT FRIENDS £1.00 OFF!

Lari is a truly inspirational and enthusiastic performer. Her books First Aid for Fairies and Other Fabled Beasts, which has been shortlisted for the Royal Mail Award, and the sequel Wolf Notes follow the adventures of Helen, who uses her mother’s first aid kit to treat injured fabled beasts and her riddle solving abilities to help them with their quests throughout Scotland. Her version of Tam O’Shanter, published this summer, is a spooky retelling of Burns’ story which comes with the advice not to read it in the dark. Lari’s events include tips on how to make adventures exciting, examples of how writers create goodies and baddies, and inside info on how risky research can be. She might even share one of her favourite wolf stories! A fantastically interactive and stimulating session mainly for 8-12 year olds. SEAT PRICES FULL PRICE £4.00 / REDUCED RATE £3.00 EDEN COURT FRIENDS £1.00 OFF! SCHOOLS PRICE £3.00 (PLUS ONE TEACHER FREE WITH EVERY TEN PUPILS)

SGL BOARDROOM / 19.00 This brilliant workshop will help you get that idea from your head onto the page, no matter how stubborn it is! Erica Munro lives on the Black Isle and has had two novels published by Piatkus Books under her own name, and two by Avon as glamorous girl-about-town Lucy Hepburn. SEAT PRICES FULL PRICE £6.00 / NO REDUCED RATE EDEN COURT FRIENDS £1.00 OFF!

KIDS (7+) CLARE GROGAN ONETOUCH THEATRE / 13.00 Clare Grogan is best known as the lead singer of Altered Images and for her role as Susan in cult 80s film Gregory’s Girl. She has since had roles in EastEnders, Red Dwarf and Father Ted. Last year Clare published her first book, Tallulah and the TeenStars. Tallulah Gosh -– aka Teresa Gordon is an ordinary girl living in an ordinary street, but who (in her bedroom) becomes the lead singer with the biggest and best band in the world. Tallulah and her friends take the school talent contest by storm, a feat more noteworthy as they were in the least likely to succeed category.

THURSDAY 8 OCT

WORKSHOP ERICA MUNRO OUT OF YOUR HEAD, ONTO THE PAGE

In the new instalment to come, Tallulah on Tour, their demo song is heard by the influential manager of the hit band Betty and the Bee Stings who offer them a support slot on their next tour. But can Teresa persuade her mum and dad that it’s a good idea? Will she be able to keep the band together long enough to learn new songs? For Teresa, the future is exciting and full of incredible challenges. Clare’s books embrace the fact that young girls no longer want to be ballerinas or princesses. Clare wanted to tell the story of an ordinary girl who had these ambitions, not someone in High School Musical. There is no secret that Clare draws on her own experiences and her desire to be part of something she was proud of is evident in Tallulah - definitely an ideal all parents would be happy to encourage. SEAT PRICES FULL PRICE £4.00 / REDUCED RATE £3.00

OUTDOOR / ENVIRONMENTAL BRIAN WILSON ONETOUCH THEATRE / 19.00 Brian is a Highlands-based writer and environmentalist, best known for his adventure and travel writing. After working with many of the major Scottish conservation and environmental organisations, he is now a freelance environmental contractor and trainer specialising in traditional stonework and thatching. Like many writers he enjoys a good yarn and talks about the people and places he visits with humour and sometimes philosophical slant. He tries to explore the interplay of adventure, environment and folklore, and to represent the drama, humour and philosophical connections between the people, places and events of a journey. These are, of course, the elements of any good yarn anyway! SEAT PRICES FULL PRICE £7.00 / REDUCED RATE £5.00 EDEN COURT FRIENDS £1.00 OFF!

OUTDOOR JOHN ALLEN AND CRAIG WELDON WALKING PANEL CHAIR: JOHN DAVIDSON EMPIRE THEATRE / 20.30 The tragic death of 6 teenagers on Cairngorm in 1971 prompted John Allen to dedicate the next 3 decades to saving lives on Scotland’s mountains. After over 30 years and 1200 rescues, Cairngorm John, writes of his time with Cairngorm Mountain Rescue. His main aim in writing the book was to raise the profile of CMRT. In doing so he has created a book replete with interesting characters, harrowing incidents and many humorous anecdotes. Craig Weldon has been a student, engineer, submersible pilot, songwriter and failed music studio owner, itinerant temp worker, technical editor, and a public servant. The one constant has been his love of the hills. Weekend Fix is a lively account of hill-walking and up and down every possible terrain, braving Welsh farmers, Knoydart rain, the terrors of the Cuillins, and real ales. From Sutherland to the rolling downs of Gloucestershire, Craig and his friends search out their Weekend Fix. John and Craig will be in discussion about their differing approaches to spending time in Scotland’s remote areas.

PLAYHOUSE CINEMA / 12.00 Over a period of 90 days, Robin Gillanders journeyed throughout the Highlands of Scotland and Orkney in the spirit of Edwin Muir’s Scottish Journey of 1934, photographing whoever and whatever he encountered. His beautiful book Highland Journey is a must for all to see. Not only do the photographs capture a very personal contact with the Highlands of Edwin Muir, but Robin’s thoughtful words relay an honest and subjective story of what he encountered. In the manner of itinerant photographers of the 19th and 20th centuries, he used a traditional large format camera and black and white film which was processed in the converted shower of his campervan. During his talk Robin will show photos, some of which are not in the book, plus play some recordings taken along his journey. SEAT PRICES FULL PRICE £5.00 / REDUCED RATE £4.00 EDEN COURT FRIENDS £1.00 OFF!

HISTORY TIM NEWARK CHAIR: TBC PLAYHOUSE CINEMA / 13.30 From the fields of Waterloo to the deserts of Sudan, from the Plains of Abraham to the mountains of Dargai, - the Highlander has made his mark. But how was it that an outlaw from the 18th century should become transformed into an international hero?

FRIDAY 9 OCT

PHOTOGRAPHY ROBIN GILLANDERS – A HIGHLAND JOURNEY

Highlander is the first book to tell the complete story of how the Highland soldier rose from humble roots in the mountains of Scotland to become a dynamic figure of universal appeal. It tells the story through a unique combination of military history, social history and popular literature. It uses the words of the soldiers themselves, from their diaries, letters and journals and quotes from the journalists, novelists, and actors who transformed their deeds into legends. But wouldn’t you like more energy and a stronger immune system, wouldn’t you like to get rid of that lingering cold or get more mobility in your joints, wouldn’t you like to have better hair and skin, wouldn’t you like to lose a teeny bit of weight and improve your mood? All without going through a whole lifestyle revamp? ‘Course you would. Eat Well with Nell provides plenty of recipes and ideas to combat every health niggle you might have. And you don’t even have to give up chocolate. Passionate about food and cycling, Nell has cycled (and eaten) in every country she has visited from Mexico’s cactus-studded deserts to Pakistan’s snow-topped mountains. Her hobby has led to a fascinating career in nutrition, food and travel writing and TV presenting, including shows such as ‘The Woman Who Ate Scotland’. As a fully qualified nutritionist, Nell is fascinated by harnessing the power of food so you can get the most out of life whether it’s cycling hundreds of miles or just preparing a meal that puts you in a thoroughly good mood.

TRAVEL WRITING / FOOD & DRINK CAROL DRINKWATER ONETOUCH THEATRE / 20.00 Carol is better known to those of us of a certain age as Mrs Helen Herriot in the TV adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small. But when she and her partner happened upon a derelict farm in the South of France, Carol’s potential was truly fulfilled. Her bestselling trilogy, The Olive Farm, The Olive Season and The Olive Harvest, tells of their trials and tribulations, renovating a wreck and rejuvenating a desolate olive grove. There are many (hilarious) local encounters, some mystical, such as with the local water diviner who managed to find water in the barren landscape. Over the past few years, Carol has travelled extensively through the Mediterranean exploring the future of olive farming and meeting other olive farmers whose visions for the future are both remarkable and ingenious in The Olive Route and The Olive Tree. Carol is currently working with UNESCO on a lavish documentary film series inspired by these two books. The series is both travel and history based and will follow an Olive Heritage Trail around the Mediterranean Basin. The aim is to celebrate the cultural heritage of this sacred tree.

She has published 3 novels since 2006 after being snapped up from the highland short story magazine RAW: GJ Moffat’s used his day job as a lawyer in Glasgow to feed into his first book Daisychain. Logan Finch is almost partner in his law firm but this is threatened by a run in with a group of international money launderers who bring back to life a part of his past he had tried to forget. Over the space of only 3 days, one of the lead characters needs to mature from the innocence implied in the daisy chain found pressed in her book to

thinking of enterprising moves in an attempt to save her life. GJ’s inspiration for this character is a real life family member. Neil Forsythe had several careers before falling into journalism - writing mostly on criminals and football. His meeting with the Scottish fraudster Elliot Castro led to Other People’s Money, (Castro’s biography soon to be made into a film). Neil’s first novel Let Them Come Through tells of a once successful TV medium who’s dodgy manager tries to resurrect his career from the Z list with not quite the desired outcome.

FOOD AND DRINK SUE LAWRENCE CHAIR: NICKY MARR EMPIRE THEATRE / 13.00 Sue was the second winner of Masterchef in 1991 and since then has become a household name in Scotland not only as a chef but as a food writer, exploring all aspects of Scottish cuisine from clapshot to deep fried mars bars. She has talked to over 70 prominent Scots in her new book Taste Ye Back, asking them to provide their favourite recipes as well as memories of their early eating habits. Gordon Brown may be one of the most powerful men on the planet but he still sometimes needs to warm up a convenience meal for one. Alistair Darling outlined the acquired taste necessary for the Western Isles delicacy of salted gannet, while Alex Salmond offers a childhood recollection of being playfully mocked by his family for being so skinny. Former Scotland football coach Alex McLeish revealed that he found his own childhood preferences particularly difficult to shake off; dipping Farley’s rusks in tea and Sharleen Spiteri admits “Whenever I visit Scotland I stock up on a month’s supply of tattie scones which I eat fried with brown sauce.” Other people in the book include Ewan McGregor, Hardeep Singh Kohli, A.L. Kennedy, Andy Murray and Gordon Ramsay. Sue will be cooking some recipes from the book and chatting to Nicky Marr about the contributors.

CHAIR: JIM MILLER ONETOUCH THEATRE / 15.00

CHAIR: SUSAN WELSH ONETOUCH THEATRE / 18.00 PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH WATERSTONE’S

Ian Hamilton was an unknown law student at Glasgow University until Christmas Eve 1950. On that night, assisted by Alan Stewart, Gavin Vernon and Kay Matheson, he took the Stone of Destiny from beneath the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey and, in doing so became a Scottish national hero. This solitary act set Hamilton on a path for the rest of his life from which he has not diverged. Although it is now nearly sixty years since that fateful night, it is the actual events surrounding the taking of the Stone which hold people spellbound when Hamilton recounts them. In the Stone of Destiny, Ian has set down the chain of events which led to his decision to go to London, remove the Stone and a minute-by-minute account of the act and the aftermath. But this is not simply a retelling of a stunt that made nationwide news; it is a book about how a nation’s conscience was stirred by a symbolic act that changed lives of many.

ABOUT THE CHAIR: Jim Miller is a full time writer from Caithness. His previous books are The Dam Builders, The North Atlantic Front, Inverness, Scapa, Swords for hire, Brimster Tales and his new book The Foresters is published in September. ‘How did I end up here?’A question Elaine C. Smith asked herself when sitting in the dressing-room of a top theatre in London’s West End, about to go on stage with one of the UK’s most successful plays.

SATURDAY 10 OCT

HISTORY IAN HAMILTON

In Nothing like a Dame, Elaine reflects on a 50-year journey that took her from being that lippy wee lassie brought up in a mining village in the heart of darkest Lanarkshire to a celebrated performer at the peak of the entertainment world. She recounts her long struggle to make it in a male-dominated, working-class Scotland at a time when women were supposed to just shut up and stay thin, especially in the sexist world of theatre and television, where she was told, ‘Look, women just aren’t funny.’ Nothing like a Dame is a heart-warming memoir, candid, outspoken, hilarious and at times deeply sad – exactly what you would expect from that lippy, opinionated and wonderful Elaine C. Smith. This is her story.

ABOUT THE CHAIR Susan Welsh is a features writer with the Press and Journal newspaper. After growing up in the Highland Capital she moved to Aberdeen where she became features editor and a columnist with the Evening Express and a regular contributor to Radio Scotland’s Edi Stark show.
