Easy Knit Slippers Beth Stambaugh These knit slippers fit an average woman and can click to enlarge be made with two strands of worsted held together or a single strand of bulky yarn. They can be knit in a single color or use odd balls and make them striped. For babies, cast on 44 stitches using a U.S. size 3 needle and baby yarn (single strand). Complete using the pattern below but knit in garter stitch for only 1 inch. Materials: Size 9 US (5.5 mm) needles single strand of bulky weight yarn or two strands of worsted Gauge: 3.5 sts=1" click to enlarge Instructions CO 48 sts. P every row in garter stitch for 2 inches (approximately 12 rows), ending with WS facing you (your choice as to which side will be the WS). Introduce second color (if desired) and P across row. K next row, then P next row. With RS facing, begin first set of decreasing row as follows: Dec Row Part 1: K18, K2tog 3 times, place marker to designate middle of slipper, K2tog 3 times, K1, turn (turn work around so you are now on the WS or purl side of the slipper). Dec Row Part 2: P8, turn (turn work around again to RS or knit side of work). Dec Row Part 3: K8 (you will see a gap), pick up the base of the right needle's last K st and add it to the left needle, now knit the st to the left of this new st with the newly placed st together (this decreases the st you just added, but also fills in the hole that would have been created by the gap). K across remaining sts. This is the same as Make One (M1) except you are using the wrap at the base of the last K st on the right needle and not picking up a st between the left and right needle. Sounds complicated, but just give it a try. It's not necessary and if you want to skip this step you can. You will have a slight hole on the left side of the slipper for each dec row however. Next Row: Purl Repeat the 3 part Dec Row and purl row 3 times more, knitting across to 6 sts before marker, changing colors as desired. On last Dec Row, I increased 1 st at the beginning and end as follows to allow for a larger cuff: Last Dec Row: K1, Inc 1 (K in front and back of next st) to avoid a gap, do the Dec Row as above by knitting to within 6 sts of marker and K2tog 3 times, slip marker, K2tog 3 times, K1, turn. When you have finished all 3 parts of the last Dec Row, then p1, Inc 1 (P in front and back of next st), p across remaining sts (26 sts). Begin Ribbing: K1, p1 loosely across for 12 Rows. Bind off loosely. Sew up cuff, heel, and foot. If you want you can spray the bottom of the slippers with any nonskid spray that is washable for better traction.

I wanted an easy 2 needle slipper boot pattern that didn't involve a lot of counting stitches and shaping. The measurements and stitch amounts fit my foot (adult female size 7.5) and ankle; you can change them as needed to make longer or shorter slippers and/or a larger or smaller ankle area. Materials: Size 9 US (5.5 mm) needles chunky weight yarn Subsequent pairs have been knit with Bernat's Soft Boucle and that worked well Gauge: 4 sts=1" Instructions We start at the heel end. Cast on 60 stitches, leaving at least a 12" tail of yarn for sewing later. Because of the way this pattern works, whatever stitch you use for the ankle area will appear sideways on the ankle part, so I don't recommend a rib stitch since the ribs will appear horizontal rather than vertical. I used a waffle stitch in the slipper pictured; seed or moss or garter stitch would work as well, or get even fancier (or simpler)! I used a regular stockinette stitch for the foot part. Knit in your preferred ankle area stitch for 16 stitches and place a marker on the needle (eliminates counting!). Begin stockinette stitch and work in that for 30 stitches, place a marker. Return to your preferred ankle area stitch for 16 stitches. Knit in this way: pattern to the first marker, stockinette to the second, pattern to the end, for 4". Cast off your 16 pattern stitches, continue your stockinette and pattern to the end of the row. Next row, cast off the 16 pattern stitches and then continue to knit your 30 stockinette stitches until the entire piece measures 8.5" (or spans the length of your foot). To finish the toe, K1 *slip 2 tog as if to knit, K1, p2sso (pass the two slipped stitches over), K1, repeat from *. End with sl2 tog, K1, p2sso, K2. Cut the yarn, leaving 24" for sewing up. Using a blunt needle, pass the yarn through the remaining stitches twice and draw them up. If you fold your slipper in half now lengthwise, you will see how it is formed. Stitch from the toes across the top of the foot part and the front of the ankle part. Use the tail you created when you cast on to sew down the back of the ankle part and the

back of the heel. If you want, finish the top edge of the ankle part with a crochet row or two, or add a pompom or whatever else your imagination calls for!

Directions: Make 7 squares as follows for each slipper: Cast on 12 (14)(17)(20) sts. Work in garter st. (K each row) until square is 2 1/4" (2 3/4")(3 1/4")(3 3/4") long. Bind off. When squares are completed, lay out and follow diagram for sewing. Suggestions:

* Lightweight, packable for suitcase and tote bags. * Make colored squares by bags full, label each bag per size, then near holidays, sew squares together for quick gifts. Diagram: #2 & #3 are back heel sides of slippers. #1 & #6 are bottom sole. #4 & #5 are front sides.

Following diagram, sew squares flat at stitch marks. Now sew back heel seams A & B together. Sew sides of foot, C to D and E to F. Then fold square #7 upwards for toe & sew G to H and I to J. To complete, sew K to L and M to N.

Slippers With Cuffs Mary L. Redmon This pattern is a combination of years of trial and error to find click to enlarge the best and easiest way to knit slippers. I use the same pattern for all adults; they stretch to fit all. Even the men like them. Materials: 4 ply yarn size 8 needles Instructions: Cast on 45 sts. Row 1: knit Row 2: k7, p1, k29, p1, k7 Row 3: k 17, p1, k9, p1, k 17 Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 16 ridges. Cast off 7 sts for two rows. Continue pattern for 10 ridges. Shape Toe: Row 1: k2, k2 tog across; end k3 Rows 2, 3, 4: knit Row 5: k1, k 2 tog across Rows 6, 7, 8: knit Row 9: k2 tog across Row 10: knit Cut yarn leaving a 10 inch tail. Thread needle, draw sts tog and sew together the toe section. Then sew the heel edges together. For quick knitting, I knit two at the same time with 2 skeins of yarn. Guide note: Although these slippers do stretch quite a bit, if knitting for a woman's size 9 or larger I would knit 14 or more ridges accordingly rather than 10.

Peggy Pignato This is an old basic pattern, which I have updated so it can be knit with absolutely no seams. It is partly knit back and forth (but not really "flat", so you will need to use dpn's at the heel end, which is where you start) and partly knit in the round. For a really warm slipper, you should use a bulky weight wool, such as 3-ply Bartlettyarn or Lopi. One skein should make two slippers, unless they are extra long. You want a nice firm, dense fabric and I would suggest trying a US size 8 (5.0 mm) needle to achieve this. This is an adult size pattern. The actual size is determined by the length you make it. Cast on 2 sts. Row 1: Slip 1, K 1 Row 2: Slip 1, M1, K 1 (3 sts) Rows 3-5: Slip 1, knit across Row 6: Slip 1, M1, knit to last st, M1, K1 (5 sts) Rows 7-9: Slip 1, knit across Row 10: Repeat Row 6 (7 sts) Rows 11-13: Slip 1, knit across Row 14: Repeat Row 6 (9 sts) Rows 15-17: Slip 1, knit across Row 18: Repeat Row 6 (11 sts) You will need to knit the following part by having each side on a dpn, but you will still be knitting back and forth: Pick up and knit 9 sts along edge. Turn. Slip 1, knit 19. Pick up and knit 9 sts along other edge. (29 sts) Next row (WS): K 9, P1, K9, P1, K9 Row 2 (RS): Knit across Repeat these two rows for 4-5" (half or a little less than half the finished foot length), increasing 1 st on last row (30 sts). Count the number of ridges and make a note of it for your second slipper. Join and start knitting in the round. K 1, P 1 rib for about 4-5" (until 1" less than finished length). Make a note of how many rows for your second slipper. Decrease rounds: Knit 2 together around. Next 2 rounds: knit Last round: Knit 2 together around. Cut yarn, leaving a tail, and draw it through all the remaining sts. Make a second one to match!
