When I was GAing I was the getback coach my first college game well during half time the Assistant that was in the box came up to me and ripped me a new one for not doing my job as the getback coach. Well after the game the Refs, coaches that were on the sidelines, and an other college coach that was in the stands complemented me about how much control I had of the sidelines. Even after hearing all the complements the coach that was in the box still refussed to accept the fact that he was wrong.

This year we were up by 5 in a freshman game late in the 4th. We got pinned on inside our own five with about 6 seconds left. Well, we punt and the returner catches the ball on about the 50. As our kids are running down the field, the final buzzer goes off. HALF OF OUR KIDS JUST STOP!! The returner crossed the field and scored a touchdown. They win by 1 (they miss the PAT). After the game, the JV coaches run over to us, all saying "WHY DIDN'T YOU TAKE THE SAFETY???" Well, we just all nearly cried.

Head Coach: Legendary Heisman Trophy Winner John David Crow Game: Tulsa (1977) Just held Tulsa on a two-point conversion attempt to win the game with less than a minute remaining. They onside kick and we field it. Crow tells the QB to dropback and down it. He does twice. Tulsa calls timeout twice. He does thrice and a penalty stops the clock. On fourth down, he quickly downs the ball again as the clock nears 6 seconds to play. The clock stops and Tulsa runs out the well-known top-ranking NCAA placekicker Steve Cox and the field goal team to kick a 57 yard game-winning field goal. Crow thought the clock continued to run on a change of possession despite every man on the sideline screaming to the contrary. Lots more where that one came from.

Shoot Buff, I had a job where I averaged getting fired twice a week in practice and 3 times every Friday night. The firings in practice were in front of the kids, the ones on friday night were only the ones in earshot, I was upstairs.

Les Johnson as Patton Les Johnson dressed up as General George Patton, complete with medals, ribbons, helmet, and revolver loaded with blanks. Shoots the revolver to get everybody's attention for his reenactment of the opening speech from the movie, Patton. Asked me to film him so he could sell it to young coaches in order to teach him how to motivate........................ I still have the video. It motivates me to laugh whenever I get depressed. More entertaining than dumb..... [Edited on 5-27-2004 by JWalker]

we (i say we because i dont remember who was actually in charge) were traveling to an out of town game, and we put players equipment on a box truck, trainers eq. in his truck along with video eq. etc. and the footballs got on the trainers truck. OK... here we go... trainer follows the bus, right? as we head down the road the football appearantly fly out of the trainers truck. Luckily, one of the student trainers was riding to the game with thier parents, they stop to get the ball bag. OK ... here we go... Another car had already stopped and was picking up the bag as the little girl gets out and says I will take them im a student trainer. The man in the car says NO I will take them we are going to the game too. Well It turns out they must have been going to the game in the town we were traveling thru....because we have never seen those balls again to this very day.. TRUE STORY

A coach I worked with has a bad habit of standing almost to the numbers during the game. One night he had shared a few unkind words with the sideline official. On a long play, the official was running down the sidline and "accidently" knocked the coach TO THE GROUND. Coach got his ego bruised, plus a flag.

I looked up once in pre-game to witness our OL coach throwing passes to the linemen. I walked over and asked him what he was doing and he said "we have already finished all of our other stuff". Needless to say he is now a truck driver.

Had a rookie coach tell the kids he could out run them on sprints after practice during conditioning. Well he lines up and takes off with the kids takes about 8 strides and goes down like a shot. the kids finish thier sprint and look back to see him roling on the ground holding his ham which he pulled. We were all rolling watching this guys on the ground. He never made that statement again lol

Once had a defensive guru call a timeout after the other team got a first down...only problem was there was only 6 seconds left in the half...clock would have started and probably ran out...they hadnt gotten a play in on time all night... You know the rest of the story...they hit the TE on a dump route and score..we goto the half down by 14

We had a coach run down the sideline alongside his player as he broke for a td. He then hit a bad spot on the ground and tore his ACL.
He should of armed himself if he was going to decorate his saloon with my friend.

I got the best one. How about a HC who not once but at least 4-5 games in the same year would put on NEW PLAYS in PREGAME. I don't mean just change a little something I mean a new formation, shifts, motion, blocking, he did it all several times. One game he put on a cross trap play and the FB and TB ran into each other and the QB! Needless to say the opposing coaches laughed a little. I can also remember 1-2 games when he would put on a new play in his pre game speech-he would just tell them where to go and what to do-we never even got to line ip in it before we ran it in a game!! Do yall still wonder why I told him after week 3 I wasn't coming back???

1. jh coach put on a helmet, had a dummy in each hand. lined up his entire team, one at a time they ran at him, he proceeded to beat the crap out of each kid. then he got a fb, and ran around the field as the team chased him. this guy was about 6-3, 250.

I was at a game once in wheeler and witnessed a defensive coodinator, who was standing beyond the numbers with a wired headset. get caught out there in no mans land when the opposing tailback broke lose and ran between him and the sideline. all he could do was squat down and hold his cord to his headset to the ground...funniest thing i've ever seen an educated, grown man do.

District game late in the season (last game in fact), team ahead 24-19 has the ball, 20 seconds left in the game, clock is RUNNING! What do you do? You let the damned clock run out and win the game! Well, the winning coach was already in the playoffs as long as they win. He gets greedy and wants to go for the endzone. I was the umpire and as the offense came to the line I said to the QB "you know that you DON"T have to run a play, and you win, right?" And he said, "yes, I know, but the coach wants another score." Stupid, stupid, stupid. The QB drops back, and the whole defense blitzes. A defensive end literally takes the ball out of the QB's hand as he winds up to throw it, goes 70 yards for a TD, time runs out, and the defensive team wins. I have never, in 17 years of officiating, seen a coach that mad after a game. What is funny is that he was made at his coaches and the officials, not himself for making such a dumb mistake. He came into the dressing room and started yelling at the officials for a couple of things during the game that he never said a word about during the game. He was fired the next day! But, he is now a successful 4A coach.

I know this is the wrong sport, but we end up having to coach more than one. I was the assistant basketball coach during a varsity game, and we have just been called for a blocking call instead of a charge. It is about the third time of the game and second time for this kid that night. Our head coach is furious because the kid is falling out and not being tough enough to take the charge. He calls timeout to gripe at that kid and then looks over at me. He says, "Coach lets show him how to take a charge." I look at him wondering what is he thinking. He sets himself to take a charge and says "coach run over me." I say, "you sure? That might not be a good idea" He barks back "RUN OVER ME!!!" I take two good hard steps and lower a shoulder and he stands in there as I hit him. He flies backwards, lands on his back, tie up around his head, jumps up and yells at the kid "Thats the way you take a charge!!!"

Officiating in Austin this last year and right before half time a wing official has a PF call on a defensive back for hitting a receiver when the ball is clearly not catchable. It was a call I may not have made, but he was right there and in his judgment the defensive player just used the situation as a cheap shot. The team that the call went against was opposite the official that made the call, and they went nuts. When we were leaving the field for half time, the secondary coach of the team that got the call against them walks straight into the middle of the field and waits for the calling official to walk by and proceeds to blast the official, cursing and yelling at him. When another official told me what was going on, I went back and got in between the official and the coach, and told the official, who basically had ignored the coach, to go to the dressing room. The coach then started yelling and cursing at me, right there on the 50 yard line as the band was trying to take the field. I saw the HC in the end zone, and went towards him ignoring the pissed off coach. As soon as I got to the HC I said, "I want to know this coaches name, and I want him gone from this game the second half because we will be at the UIL next week." The HC looked at the other coach and told him "get your ass in the locker room, NOW!" Funny as hell. The coach looked like a whipped puppy. The HC promised that he would "take care" of the problem, so I said the coach could come back as long as he didn't say another word. As we were lining up for the second half kickoff, the coach in question came up to me, hat in hand, and begged forgiveness saying he would apologize to the official he berated. I've never seen a coach that scared. Nothing ever came of it with the UIL, but I think the coach learned that night how not to handle a situation like this.

I can remember when I was playing had a coach, who was a little nuts anyway, try to motivate us by taking on an OT twice his size. Needless to say the coach was not in pads but the tackle was. When it was over coach had blood running down his face and had to go to the emergency room! He was alright after a couple of stitches!

Nothing at all, as long as you understand you will get a 15 yard penalty for it and don't get pissed off because you do. Cheap shot away. It makes my job easier when your first string is all ejected.

When I was coaching JH, we had another rookie JH coach try to show a kid "what happens" when you chop a DE. So, he illustrates just what will happen to that DE when you chop him, so he threw himself up into the air with arms and legs flailing around everywhere, lands awkwardly, and breaks a foot. Kids were pointing and laughing at him, and so were we.

Legend has it Jack Jacobsen here at Permian in the late 70s went head to head with an O-lineman one day at practice. Years later he had an aneurism, so........ A couple of years ago at a practice the 9th grade coach at one of the junior highs asked the 8th grade coach (who was running the freshman scout team defense) why he wasn't lining them up in "our" defense. The 8th grade coach replied "well, because I'm lining them up in the opponents' defense. That's what the scout team is supposed to do. Ya know- give the starters a look at what they'll be playing against this week". Needless to say, the 9th grade coach is no longer coaching and that 8th grade coach is now the 9th grade coach.
