MECHANISM OF ACTION Cefuroxime binds to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell wall, thus inhibiting biosynthesis and arresting cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death.
INDICATIONS (1) Pharyngitis or tonsillitis due to S.pyogenes. (2). Acute bacterial otitis media due to S. Pneumoniae, H. Influenzae, M. catarrhalis. (3). Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis due to S. pneumoniae, H. Influenzae. (4). Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis due to S. pneumoniae, influenzae.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
Large doses can cause cerebral irritation and convulsions; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, GI disturbances; erythema multiforme, StevensJohnson syndrome, epidermal necrolysis.
