Los pensamientos de Hal aparentemente se encuentran desconectados de las acciones de su cuerpo: mientras los primeros aparecen ante el lector como un discurso ordenado, coherente e inteligible, su cuerpo responde emitiendo sonidos y gestos caóticos, absolutamente ininteligibles y antinaturales. El año de la Ropa Interior para Adultos Dependientes es un símbolo de los adultos regresados a un estado infantil respecto al desperdicio. La mayoría de los personajes en La Broma Infinita son adictos a algún tipo de substancia que los conduce a un cierto nivel de obsesión, desesperación o “paralyzed stasis” 72.
