Introduction Emotional intelligence means having knowledge and feelings that is used to define a person. Emotions are feelings that humans use to express how they feel. We use emotions to help us pay attention to what is affecting and figure out ways to fix the problem. Humans can have mixed emotions, but we are the ones that can control it. Emotional intelligence developed in a person’s life at birth. Normal emotions of a person result in a healthy life. Emotional intelligence helps us draw opinions whenever a problem occurs. In this paper, I will address the use of emotional intelligence concepts in communication, the use of emotional intelligence concepts in work, home, and personal life, and opportunities to improve emotional intelligence. Communication is a two-way process in which a person listens to others (receive information) and express his/her feeling (sending information). In 1998 Daniel Goleman termed the words emotional quotient as the learned ability to perceive, understand, and express our feelings accurately. It is important that we use our feeling accurately and control it because it does not suppose to work against us. “Effective communication involves the best choice of the best communications channel for a specific purpose” (Communication Skills, 2014). Communication is a casual exchange among individuals through a system of signs, symbols, and behavior. There are three areas of personal skills such as self-awareness, self-management, and motivation. There are two aspects of interpersonal skills empathy and social skills. Selfawareness is being aware of and understanding one’s feelings as it come and evolve. Selfmanagement is when a person is a situation and how he/she manage his/her feelings.

Motivation is the feeling when an individual can improve or achieve his/her goals. Empathy is being aware of other people’s feelings both individually and in a group. Social skills use a variety of interpersonal skills. Emotional intelligence is important in a workplace because it shows that an individual is interested in the company he/she work for. It shows that an individual enjoys working with coworkers to get the tasks done in a workplace. Our feelings are not supposed to be used in a workplace, but when we receive criticism on our performance it can affect us. We cannot let our emotions affect us while on our job because it could result in being suspended or terminated. Our emotions should always be under control in order to have a good performance at work. Emotional intelligence at home should always be used accurately especially when we are around family and friends. We should that love our family and friends when we have gatherings that bring laughter, fun, and happiness in our lives. When a loved one is sick or dies it brings sorrow into an individual’s life. Our loved ones are around us all the time and losing them is a hard feeling to deal with. Our personal life defines who an individual is and the things he/she does is his/her life is important. It does not matter if an individual is a stay at home mom/dad, entrepreneur, or anything a person does that interests his/her life. Emotional intelligence in our personal life helps us point out what we dislike and like. It has to do with the choices an individual chooses to make in his/her life. Emotional intelligence controls our emotions, behavior, and actions. There is no escaping from having emotional intelligence because it is instilled in our lives forever.

There are many ways a person can increase his/her emotional intelligence. One way is to explore activities that excites an individual’s life. Traveling around the world is an example of how a person can improve his/her emotional intelligence. An individual learns different knowledge when he/she travels. When a person is less under stress it helps him/her live a healthy life. If a person is more under stress that could result in serious health problem. Communicating with a counselor, family member, or close friend helps relieve a person from being depressed. It is important that a person’s feelings get addressed before he/she ends up doing something that could destroy his/her life. An individual’s emotions should not be ignored and paying attention to his/her feelings shows concern. Another way to increase emotional intelligence is to get out the house with someone an individual feels comfortable around. It does not matter if it going shopping, exercising at the park, or catching a movie he/she enjoys. These activities help individuals focus on what is going on now verses his/her past. Emotional intelligence is a gift that a person cannot avoid using. An individual was born to have different feelings about situations he/she face. When a person is happy all the time his/her emotional intelligence increases. When an individual is sad his/her emotional intelligence decreases. Communication is an important skill that individuals use to express how they feel and listen to others. If communication did not exist it would be hard for individuals to understand the message, the sender is trying to send. In order for a person to send a message communication must be effective. Emotional intelligence is important to our everyday lives whether if it is at work, home, or any other place that we visit.
