DOCTOR WHO FATHERS AND SONS BY WILL JOHNSON EXT. CASTLE - NIGHT A dark, foreboding, Dracula-style castle stands all alone on a cliff top, a spire at the top reaching seemingly to the sky. CUT TO: INT. CASTLE - BEDCHAMBER CU. A frail old hand, clasped in a younger hand. FESTARI OOV (weak) My son...
I do not have long to
live... DRACSTARI OOV Save you strength Father. OFF THIS to see a young handsome man in his 30s DRACSTARI, clasping the hand of his father - FESTARI.
Festari lies on a bed.
He is obviously very weak, in the
late stages of some illness. They are also surrounded by SERVANTS.
The room is
furnished typically for the nineteenth century, candles burning all around. FESTARI (weak) My son...
Before I die, I must
tell you something.
You know that
for my entire life I have guarded the crypt in this castle.
I have
kept it locked and allowed no-one access. DRACSTARI Yes Father. FESTARI (weak) I now pass that responsibility on to you.
You must now guard the
crypt.
But you must never enter,
you must never go inside, do you understand? DRACSTARI I understand Father.
FESTARI (weak) This is my dying wish.
You must
promise me that you will not enter it, no matter what the circumstances. DRACSTARI I promise Father.
I will not fail
you in this task. FESTARI (weak) Here... is... the key. He reaches into the folds of his nightgown, withdrawing something which could be a key in the far future, but not in the nineteenth century, it is much too advanced. Dracstari takes the key. DRACSTARI I shall guard the crypt with my life. FESTARI (weak) I shall now depart this world in peace, knowing that... the
crypt... (dying) safe... my son... He falls back onto his pillows, dead. Then something strange happens. FX: his body begins to GLOW with GOLDEN LIGHT, similar to regeneration, but instead of changing, his figure seems to diminish until there is nothing left of Festari.
As if he
has evaporated. The second this odd phenomena has taken place, Dracstari's previously concerned face turns to one of cunning and arrogance. He gestures to the servants. DRACSTARI Come!
We have much work to do! CUT TO:
INT. UNDERGROUND HALLWAY DRACSTARI, pursued by SERVANTS marches along a dank, gloomy corridor. CUT TO:
INT. CRYPT - ANTECHAMBER The antechamber of the crypt is full of coffins, as you would expect in a crypt. The lock clicks. CUT TO: INT. UNDERGROUND HALLWAY DRACSTARI is turning the key in a lock which looks as out of place in the nineteenth century as the key does. CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - ANTECHAMBER The door to the crypt opens and DRACSTARI enters followed by the SERVANTS. Dracstari crosses over to a control panel
which looks
really out of place in this setting and adjusts some of the controls. A pneumatic hiss come from one of the coffins, and the lid slowly begins to rise. DRACSTARI Awake my friends, awake! has come!
The time
CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - MAIN CHAMBER The door to this is wrenched open and DRACSTARI strides in. He stops as he sees something in this room. DRACSTARI At last.
At last!
I am above the
Gods! CU.
A horrible, TALONED CLAW reaches around the door. CUT TO TITLES CUT TO:
INT. TARDIS CU.
The cover of a book-Dracula.
It is being read by THE DOCTOR.
He is grinning as he reads
it. REBECCA That seems to be amusing you. THE DOCTOR Eh? REBECCA
That book you're reading. THE DOCTOR Oh you mean this?
Oh well, I was
just thinking (laughs) if Bram Stoker could see a vampire, it would make Dracula look like a bat. REBECCA He is a bat, technically. THE DOCTOR Have you read this? REBECCA Yes.
I think I've read most of
the books in print. THE DOCTOR Really?
Okay let's think...
Have
your E. Emret Cruzer's guide to the Universe? REBECCA No. THE DOCTOR Good, it's very inaccurate.
What
else...
Johnek M.R.'s
understanding aliens? REBECCA I haven't even heard of it. THE DOCTOR See?
You haven't read most of the
books in print. REBECCA Well just because there's some space library you can zoom off to. THE DOCTOR Oh God!
Don't remind me!
I'm not
going there again! He slams the book shut and puts it down. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Well, that was a very interesting read, but we really must be getting on. He gets up and goes over to the console. buttons then looks up.
He presses a few
REBECCA approaches him.
REBECCA Doctor, what's wrong?
THE DOCTOR I'm thinking. REBECCA Choosing our next destination? THE DOCTOR I'm contemplating whether Transylvania in the nineteenth century is a bad idea. REBECCA Dracula's put you in the mood? THE DOCTOR Yes.
You know, that's the first
time a book's had this sort of effect on me. REBECCA Well it's a good book. THE DOCTOR What do you think? REBECCA Personally?
I think it's a
fantastic idea. The Doctor smiles at her.
THE DOCTOR (with a sudden enthusiasm) Then Transylvania it is! He flick a switch. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Actually, I just remembered.
A
friend of mine lives in Transylvania. REBECCA Who is he? THE DOCTOR Festari.
Lives in a lovely great
castle on a mountainside. go and visit.
Might
That sound good?
REBECCA I wouldn't mind. THE DOCTOR Alright then.
Transylvania,
Festari's castle, Nineteenth century. CUT TO:
EXT. CASTLE - CEMETERY - NIGHT The castle towers up into the sky. PAN DOWN to see a group of SERVANTS bearing a coffin. They are inside a large cemetery, crumbling stone headstones all around them. Before them is a FUNERAL PARTY standing around the freshly dug grave. DRACSTARI is among them. The servants carry the coffin forward and lay it down in the grave. CUT TO: EXT. CASTLE - MAIN ENTRANCE - NIGHT The grind of ancient engines is heard and FX: the TARDIS materializes. The door opens and THE DOCTOR and REBECCA get out, Rebecca starring up at the Castle. REBECCA Impressive. The Doctor goes over to the main door and lifts the heavy
iron knocker, knocking a couple of times.
No reply.
THE DOCTOR Must be busy.
Hello, what have we
got here? Attached to the wall next to the door is security camera. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) That shouldn't be there. REBECCA Doctor are you sure this is the nineteenth century? THE DOCTOR Of course.
So what's a security
camera doing here? He leans forwards to look at the camera. The camera moves forwards as well. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Oh now that is advanced! He moves his head from side to side. The camera does exactly the same thing at the same time and speed. The Doctor then nods his head up and down really fast. The
camera does the same, again at the same time and speed. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) I could do this all day. (serious) Now!
Let's get to the bottom of
this. The Doctor raises his sonic screwdriver to the camera. He is just about to press the button when FX: the camera fades away, leaving the section of wall where it was blank, except for an old-fashioned view hole. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) What?
I was having fun! REBECCA
I'm sure you'll live.
Anyway, the
reason no-one's answering the door is because they're all in there. She points to the gates of the cemetery where the FUNERAL PARTY can be seen vaguely. CUT TO: EXT. CASTLE - CEMETERY - NIGHT The DOCTOR and REBECCA stick their heads over the shoulders
of some PEOPLE standing around the coffin.
The people
stand aside to let them through, they both mutter 'Thanks' as they are let into the circle. A PRIEST presides over the funeral. REBECCA (whispering) Doctor, is one of these people Festari? The Doctor hushes her, shakes his head - doesn't know. Meanwhile, DRACSTARI has noticed the new arrivals.
He
gestures to one of the men, who is obviously a local and points to them, muttering.
The Doctor sees this.
THE DOCTOR (whispering) I think we've been noticed. A MAN suddenly pushes in between the Doctor and Rebecca. He is in his 40s with a faint beard. MAN (whispering) Sorry. The Man has an Irish accent. strange way.
The Doctor looks at him in a
THE DOCTOR (whispering) Don't I know you? MAN (whispering) Oh I don't think so sir, I'm a newcomer to these parts. REBECCA (whispering) Wait a minute!
I know you.
You're Bram Stoker! THE DOCTOR (whispering) Yes!
That's it. STOKER (whispering)
Well, it seems my reputation precedes me. journalist.
I am merely a humble Actually I'm doing
research for a book I'm writing. I gather from your accents that the two of you are English. THE DOCTOR (whispering)
Well, just visiting an old friend. Funny story, I don't see him for ages, turn up, he's dead! The Priest is completing his reading. PRIEST ...and so we present his remains to the earth where they originated so his spirit may find its way to heaven and into the arms of the Father. The coffin is lowered into the ground. CLOSE ON Dracstari, watching this. The Priest throws some dirt onto the coffin. PRIEST (CONT'D) Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. And as he says these words FX: the castle suddenly COMES TO LIFE, LIGHT pouring out of the windows very suddenly and HUGE WAVE of what looks like COSMIC ENERGY shoots up the spire of the Castle into the sky. The congregation watches this in horror. unaffected.
The Doctor seems
FX: the light show slowly dies away leaving a strange silence. The Doctor whistles. THE DOCTOR Impressive. The whole congregation looks at him. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Sorry, just thought the light show was impressive. PRIEST Light show? show!
That was no light
Evil spirits I tell you,
there are rumors the Castle is haunted. THE DOCTOR Fair enough.
Whatever you say.
The congregation begins to move off. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Light show?
Pah!
REBECCA That was some sort of cosmic discharge.
THE DOCTOR Well yeah, but that was huge! Where could you get all that energy from? REBECCA It was a little like what happens when the TARDIS takes off. THE DOCTOR Yeah.
That's it!
You're a genius
Rebecca! REBECCA But what does it mean? THE DOCTOR No idea. He crosses over to Festari's grave and throws some soil onto it. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Ashes to ashes indeed. He turns back to BRAM STOKER. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) So, Mr. Stoker, tell me a bit more about this book of yours.
STOKER Oh it's nothing really just a silly supernatural story... CUT TO: EXT. CASTLE - MAIN ENTRANCE - NIGHT A large congregation of VILLAGERS has gathered round the TARDIS, inspecting it curiously. The DOCTOR, REBECCA and STOKER appear from the cemetery. THE DOCTOR Ah.
Um. STOKER
They seem fascinated by that box.
What is it? THE DOCTOR
It's er... mine. STOKER You own that strange thing? THE DOCTOR Yeah.
I hope they're not going
to try and do anything to it. At that moment, DRACSTARI appears beside them.
DRACSTARI Good evening. They all jump. THE DOCTOR Good evening indeed.
I'm the
Doctor and this is my friend Rebecca.
This is... DRACSTARI
You needn't introduce Mr. Stoker.
I already know him. STOKER
The count very kindly offered me refuge here.
I thought it may
help with my research. DRACSTARI I don't, however know you two. I trust you're not from the village. THE DOCTOR No, we're from London. DRACSTARI I thought so.
You said your
name was the Doctor.
THE DOCTOR That's right. DRACSTARI My father often spoke of a man named the Doctor. THE DOCTOR That's me. DRACSTARI You are the Doctor?
Then you
knew my father. THE DOCTOR He was a good friend of mine. was sorry to hear of his death.
I
DRACSTARI He lived a long and prosperous life. THE DOCTOR (under his breath) Wish I could say the same for myself. Dracstari is distracted by the villagers. DRACSTARI
What is that thing they're examining? THE DOCTOR Oh, sorry, that belongs to me. That probably wasn't the best place to leave it. Dracstari moves towards the villagers. DRACSTARI Thank you!
Thank you!
If you'd
kindly like to leave. The villagers obviously want to know more about the TARDIS and appear to disagree, but then they turn and leave through the gates.
The gates slam shut behind
them. DRACSTARI (CONT'D) Sorry about that. time for dinner.
It's nearly Mr. Stoker,
would you care to join me? STOKER Of course. THE DOCTOR In that case, we'd better be on our way.
DRACSTARI Doctor. THE DOCTOR Yeah. DRACSTARI I should very much like you to join me for dinner as well. say you knew my father.
You
Only
after his death have I realized how little I knew about him. Speaking to one of his close friends may help shed some light on some of the many mysteries I have been left to solve. THE DOCTOR Well... I suppose, if I can help.
Rebecca, what do you say? REBECCA
It would be a waste to come to Transylvania just for a funeral. I'd also like to have a look round the castle, if I may. DRACSTARI I would be Honoured my lady.
Rebecca smiles. REBECCA You don't have to call me that. THE DOCTOR Shall we begin then? They begin to go towards the castle. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Oh, by the way, what's to become of that box of mine?
I'd be
happy to move it. DRACSTARI Don't worry yourself.
It's fine
where it is. As the Doctor, Rebecca and Stoker enter the house, Dracstari looks back at the TARDIS, his former look of pleasant joviality now transformed into a mask of malice. He gives the TARDIS a look then continues inside. CUT TO: INT. CASTLE - DINING ROOM The dining room is huge.
A great long table is the centerpiece of the room, at which are seated DRACSTARI and STOKER. STOKER Are the Doctor and his lady friend not joining us? DRACSTARI He said he wished to change into more suitable attire. CUT TO: INT. BEDROOM THE DOCTOR is wearing a black Victorian-era coat and tie. He is standing before REBECCA. THE DOCTOR How do I look? REBECCA It's strange.
I've never seen
you this smart before. THE DOCTOR Transylvania.
I thought I'd
look the period.
Have you get
anything picked out yet?
REBECCA No.
Not yet.
Doctor, why don't
you just go and join them, I may be a while. THE DOCTOR You sure?
This house is very
large, are you sure you won't get lost? REBECCA I find that patronising.
Of
course I know the way. THE DOCTOR Okay.
I'll leave you to it. CUT TO:
INT. DINING ROOM THE DOCTOR enters. DRACSTARI Good evening Doctor.
You look
fantastic. THE DOCTOR Thank you.
Rebecca will be
joining us shortly, she just
needs some time to decide on a dress. DRACSTARI Very well. THE DOCTOR So, where shall I start with Festari? DRACSTARI He had many secrets.
But there
was one that always intrigued me.
He never talked about his
life before he met my mother. STOKER I hope, by the way that you don't mind my presence here.
I
understand this is a personal matter. DRACSTARI Not at all.
I'm sure it will
enhance that book of yours. The Doctor suddenly notices a portrait of a BEAUTIFUL WOMAN on the wall behind Dracstari. recognition crosses his face.
A look of
THE DOCTOR Is that your mother there? DRACSTARI Yes.
She died some years ago,
God rest her soul. The Doctor has a sad look on his face. THE DOCTOR That's the problem.
An immortal
being can't spend his life with a mortal.
Not if he doesn't
want to lose them... DRACSTARI I beg your pardon. THE DOCTOR I apologize.
Sometimes I slip
into my own musings. CUT TO: INT. CORRIDOR REBECCA makes her way along the corridor, now wearing a Victorian-era dress. with it.
She seems less than comfortable
As she passes along a section where two hallways cross, she notices something. A widescreen television hangs on the wall showing an oldfashioned cartoon. Rebecca looks at it in confusion.
She reaches out to
touch it, but as she does FX: it fades away revealing an old oil painting underneath. She looks confused but turns and keeps on walking. CUT TO: INT. DINING ROOM REBECCA enters.
DRACSTARI stands. DRACSTARI
My lady, you look beautiful. REBECCA My name's Rebecca.
'My lady'
sounds pretentious. She walks forward and sits at her place. THE DOCTOR Now, where was I?
Oh yes.
Well, all I can say about your father when I knew him was that he was a traveler. DRACSTARI Was he?
He never spoke of any
travelling. THE DOCTOR Well, it wasn't travelling in the traditional sense. Suddenly the room begins to SHAKE, vigorously.
Plates
and glasses begin to tumble over. STOKER What the devil...? FX: then the entire room BURSTS with PRAC LIGHT and the hum of power.
ENERGY currents begin to run up all the
metallic objects in the room. Then, as quickly as it began, it is over. There is a stunned silence. STOKER (CONT'D) (jokingly) Evil spirits? The atmosphere lightens.
DRACSTARI No.
We've been having
electrical storms recently around the castle.
The
villagers believe it to be evil spirits.
If you'll excuse me, I
need to check none of the more valuable objects in the east wing have been damaged. He gets up and leaves. As soon as he is gone, the Doctor gets up and walks over to the portrait of the woman. THE DOCTOR She was so young... REBECCA Who is she? THE DOCTOR She was Festari's wife.
A
human. The Doctor laughs. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) I always told him he could never marry a human but... he knew it
would never last.
But he still
loved her. STOKER You speak as if this Festari wasn't human. THE DOCTOR Well, that would be ridiculous of course. He looks back at Stoker, his expression is unreadable. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) What are your thoughts on the subject? STOKER Doctor, I've spent a long time in these lands.
I've seen
things I can't explain. which no-one can explain.
Things All I
can say is, we can't discount them as being nonsense.
Not
completely anyway. CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - MAIN CHAMBER
DRACSTARI enters the crypt, furious. DRACSTARI You fools!
How dare you
activate it now?
Have you no
patience? A horrible, distorted VOICE is heard. VOICE OOV We need another. DRACSTARI I have another.
He is here.
VOICE OOV Here?
Now?
The last of them?
DRACSTARI Except for me. but not yet!
We can proceed, Now don't activate
it again until I tell you to. We are nowhere near ready to act. VOICE OOV I see no reason to delay now that we have another. be destroyed!
He must
CUT TO: INT. DINING ROOM DRACSTARI enters, to find THE DOCTOR staring up at the portrait.
He smiles. DRACSTARI You seem fascinated by that portrait, Doctor THE DOCTOR It's a very beautiful portrait. DRACSTARI Quite. THE DOCTOR How are things in the east wing? DRACSTARI Nothing was damaged thank God. THE DOCTOR Right, all I've said so far is your father was a traveller. Hardly a huge revelation. DRACSTARI I'm not feeling very hungry
anymore.
I think it is time I
turned in.
You're welcome to
look round the castle if you'd like.
There is just one section
which is off limits: the crypt. Until recently my father kept it locked. mystery.
That was another He never told anyone
what was inside. THE DOCTOR I don't think he ever mentioned it to me either. DRACSTARI Well, good night gentlemen, lady. He exits the room. THE DOCTOR Anyone fancy a little exploring? CUT TO: INT. CORRIDOR THE DOCTOR, REBECCA and STOKER make their way along the corridor.
STOKER I think it best I turn in.
I
need to compile my research notes.
Good night Doctor, Good
night Rebecca. He turns off down another corridor. THE DOCTOR Let him work.
He's going to
write one of the most famous horror novels in history. REBECCA Doctor, this Festari, I get the feeling you didn't tell me everything about him. The Doctor stops walking. REBECCA (CONT'D) What's wrong? THE DOCTOR Coming back here and finding Festari dead...
I'd forgotten
about him for so long, but I thought his death was impossible.
I suppose that's
what happens when you spend all your time around humans.
You
become human yourself. REBECCA Festari was an alien? THE DOCTOR Festari was a Time Lord. REBECCA I thought you were the last of the Time Lords. THE DOCTOR Not quite.
In some ways Festari
was a lot like me.
He became
bored with the Time Lord lifestyle and escaped, but he chose the peaceful life, whereas I chose a life of travel, of solitude. REBECCA Well surely that means Dracstari's a Time Lord? THE DOCTOR No.
His mother was human.
He's
as human as she was.
I feel
more alone than ever now. There is silence.
Rebecca puts a comforting arm round
the Doctor. REBECCA (quietly) It's alright. Suddenly, footsteps are heard.
The Doctor pulls Rebecca
and himself behind a curtain. They peer out from behind the curtain as DRACSTARI strides past. THE DOCTOR I wonder what he's doing. REBECCA It's his Castle. THE DOCTOR I'm going to follow him, see where he goes. They follow him down the corridor.
They continue until
Dracstari comes to a door set in a stone wall, he opens it and continues. CUT TO:
INT. UNDERGROUND HALLWAY DRACSTARI enters and walks along the hallway.
THE DOCTOR
and REBECCA slip through the door just before it closes and watch Dracstari walk to the end of the corridor, open the futuristic lock and enter. The Doctor and Rebecca walk up to the door.
The Doctor
notices the lock. THE DOCTOR There's anachronism in abundance here. REBECCA That reminds me.
I saw a
television earlier which faded just like the security camera. THE DOCTOR Very odd. VOICES can be heard on the other side, the two of them listen. DRACSTARI OOV We can't start!
Have you no
patience? CUT TO:
INT. CRYPT - MAIN CHAMBER VOICE OOV Maybe we'd have more patience if you moved faster. DRACSTARI There have been complications, like you fools setting off those energy blasts.
The villagers
around this area are very superstitious, all that energy escaping can hardly go unnoticed. VOICE OOV Very well.
But we need him. DRACSTARI
I shall bring him to you. He turns and begins to walk towards the door. CUT TO: INT. UNDERGROUND HALLWAY THE DOCTOR and REBECCA shrink back against the wall as DRACSTARI exits the crypt and walks back down the hallway.
They wait until he has gone, then turn their attention to the lock. THE DOCTOR There's only one way to find out what he's up to.
Get inside
this crypt. REBECCA The lock looks very complicated. We'd need the key to get inside. THE DOCTOR Nonsense.
We can't use the
sonic screwdriver because it won't work on the lock and we can't use the TARDIS because it will attract too much attention. REBECCA Skeleton Key? THE DOCTOR Exactly. And he produces a complicated looking key from his pocket and inserts it into the lock. After much twisting and turning, the lock clicks open.
THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) There we go.
The crypt awaits.
And they enter. CUT TO: INT. STOKER'S ROOM STOKER is trying to concentrate on his notes but is finding it difficult. Eventually, out of frustration, he crumples up his notes and flings them to one side.
He is about to get up and
leave the room, when he hears a SCRATCHING, CLAWING sound. He stops dead in his tracks and turns. coming from the window.
The sound is
It sounds as if someone is
trying to climb up the side of the building. He crosses over to the window and looks out. HIS POV: the stone wall seems to stretch endlessly down the mountain, but there is nothing there. He decides to ignore it and leaves the room. CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - MAIN CHAMBER
THE DOCTOR and REBECCA are now examining the coffins which line the walls of the crypt.
The Doctor is
scanning one of them with his sonic screwdriver. REBECCA You don't think they're coffins. THE DOCTOR They're not. freezers.
They're cryogenic
The question is, what
for? He checks the readings from his sonic screwdriver. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Well, whatever it is, it's organic. Suddenly, there is a hiss and the lid to the coffin the Doctor has just been examining OPENS. The Doctor looks down in horror at the thing in the coffin, which cannot be seen. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) No.
It can't be. REBECCA
That's disgusting. THEIR POV: for the first time, the thing in the coffin
can be seen. Its face is human-like but the skin is yellow and waxy, drawn back tight over the face. long, black and greasy.
The creature's hair is
The eyes are closed, sleeping.
From beneath the creature's upper lip protrude two HUGE FANGS and it is dressed in some sort of robe. REBECCA (CONT'D) Is that... a vampire? THE DOCTOR In a sense.
They're the
Valichenberg family. REBECCA Valichenberg?
Who are they?
The Doctor turns to her. THE DOCTOR A long time ago, years before the Time War, my people fought a long, hard bloody war against a people called the Great Vampires.
The war was so bloody
and terrible we were sickened from violence forever.
The
vampires were all but destroyed,
but there were some Time Lords who joined the side of the enemy, they became vampires themselves. too.
They were killed
All except the
Valichenberg family, no-one knew what happened to them. were four.
There
The father, Vlad,
his wife, Mina, their daughter Lana and their son Arth.
And
they're all here. The Doctor turns back to the sleeping creature. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) This one's Vlad. REBECCA Well, if they're vampires, surely they can be destroyed in the same way.
Vampires can't
stand light. THE DOCTOR The Valichenbergs don't like it, but it doesn't kill them. REBECCA Stake through the heart?
THE DOCTOR They've got three. REBECCA Sign of the cross? THE DOCTOR That's Haemovores. REBECCA Garlic? THE DOCTOR They thrive off it. REBECCA What do you suggest then? The Doctor turns towards her. THE DOCTOR What matters is, the Valichenbergs want to control time itself.
I think that's
what the discharge was we saw earlier.
They must have a
damaged TARDIS around here somewhere, if they control time, every creature from every time and place in the Universe is in
danger. While the Doctor has been saying this, Rebecca has gone very still and quiet, staring beyond the Doctor.
He
notices this. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) What's the matter? Then, behind him, it suddenly comes into focus. sat up and is looking right at him.
VLAD has
The Doctor slowly
turns around. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Ah.
Good evening.
Mr.
Valichenberg. VLAD Good evening, Time Lord.
Or
should I say the Doctor? THE DOCTOR Whichever you prefer. (beat) Run! He and Rebecca charge for the door as Vlad, with amazing speed leaps out of the coffin, and seemingly FLIES after them.
CUT TO: INT. UNDERGROUND HALLWAY THE DOCTOR and REBECCA run down the hallway, as FX: the door behind them is flung aside and VLAD flies after them. CUT TO: INT. LIBRARY The huge library is empty.
The only person inside is
STOKER, pouring over a huge, dusty volume. hears noise from outside, running footsteps.
He suddenly He gets up
and goes to the door. CUT TO: INT. CORRIDOR THE DOCTOR and REBECCA are running down the corridor adjacent to the library.
They pass a SERVANT GIRL who
stares in confusion as they run past. THE DOCTOR In here! They charge into the library.
The Servant Girl turns and SCREAMS. FX: flying towards her is VLAD, he bears down on her as he lands. He grabs hold of her and digs his teeth into her neck. She screams. FX: as Vlad sucks away her blood he seems also to be sucking away her life-force.
Her skin begins to stretch
and wither and then disappear. seems to be getting younger.
At the same time, Vlad His yellow, waxy skin
begins to change colour and his long, unkempt hair begins to shrink. Then it is over.
A SKELETON falls to the ground. CUT TO:
INT. LIBRARY THE DOCTOR and REBECCA charge in.
STOKER looks up.
STOKER What the hell...? THE DOCTOR Quick Rebecca, help me move that bookcase across the door. She does and they begin to push the bookshelf with great
difficulty across the door. Eventually they manage it and run back. STOKER What's going on? THE DOCTOR You don't want to know.
Is that
the only door in the room? REBECCA Yes! Suddenly there is a CRASH from the door and the bookcase JUDDERS. THE DOCTOR Oh no! REBECCA Can he break through? THE DOCTOR I think so. STOKER If someone would kindly tell me... THE DOCTOR
If you really want to know, there's a bloodsucking maniac on the other side of that door. STOKER It sounds as more like a rugby scrum than any spirit to me. The bookcase judders even more violently, now threatening to fall. THE DOCTOR Er... I'd arm yourself. The Doctor suddenly sees a TRIDENT on the wall and snatches it down.
He holds it out in front of him as the
ramming on the door becomes harder Then it stops. STOKER They've stopped. THE DOCTOR No.
He hasn't stopped.
He's
just bringing in the family. CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - MAIN CHAMBER
CU.
The pneumatic hiss of the coffin opening as VLAD
stands over it impatiently.
It opens fully to reveal his
wife MINA. Her eyes SNAP OPEN. VLAD Hurry!
Hurry!
We must wake the
children, he is here! CUT TO two more coffins opening.
LANA and ARTH climb
out. ARTH I thirst for the blood of the Time Lord! VLAD Patience my son.
We shall yet
taste his blood. CUT TO: INT. LIBRARY THE DOCTOR, REBECCA and STOKER are still ready. STOKER I really find this quite ridiculous.
Whatever it was
hasn't come back. THE DOCTOR We should be alert.
I don't
want them getting past that door. Suddenly, the bookcase JUDDERS and falls with a crash. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) But it looks like they're about to get past that door. He raises his Trident.
It looks quite ridiculous. CUT TO:
INT. CORRIDOR VLAD, MINA, LANA and ARTH stand before the door. ARTH We are wasting time! And he RAMS the door. SMASH CUT TO: INT. LIBRARY PRAC FX: the door is THROWN OFF ITS HINGES in a shower of
splinters as ARTH dives into the room. ARTH Which one of you is the Time Lord? THE DOCTOR I think he means me. THE DOCTOR hefts the Trident. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Don't come any closer.
Not if
you want to live. Arth DIVES for the Doctor, the Doctor pulls back the Trident and THRUSTS it into his chest. Arth screams. FX: his body begins to dissolve away, melt into nothingness, until the Doctor is only holding the Trident stupidly in the air. VLAD, MINA and LANA have appeared in the door. looks down at the dust which was Arth. VLAD You have killed my son! LANA
Vlad
You shall die for this! The Doctor raises his Trident. THE DOCTOR If you take one step beyond that door, the same's going to happen to you, do you understand? CUT TO behind the Doctor's back, he is holding a small disc. Lana LUNGES for the Doctor.
At the same time, the Doctor
throws the disc onto the ground. FX: vwip! disc.
A FORCEFIELD flicks on, generated from the
Lana is thrown back.
The Doctor has now sealed off their side of the room. The family give the Doctor a last, malevolent look, then turn and leave. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) They'll be back. REBECCA Doctor, I thought you said they had three hearts so stakes wouldn't work.
THE DOCTOR Exactly.
So three stakes will
work. The Doctor throws down the Trident and turns to STOKER, who is standing there, stunned. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Plenty of material for you book, eh? STOKER That was the most incredible thing I've ever seen! And he begins to note it down in his notebook. STOKER (CONT'D) I came to Transylvania to study local legends, but I never expected to see one myself! What a story this will make! DRACSTARI suddenly enters the room. DRACSTARI What the hell happened here? THE DOCTOR You should know.
DRACSTARI I don't believe you people!
I
let you into my house, share my hospitality with you and you wreck my Library! THE DOCTOR Mr. Dracstari.
As I'm sure you
know, you have four, now three very dangerous creatures in your crypt. DRACSTARI That's ridiculous!
That crypt
is kept locked at all times.
I
have no access to it. THE DOCTOR You managed fine a few minutes ago. Dracstari contorts his face into an expression of fury. DRACSTARI Out of my house! THE DOCTOR Not until I find out what you're up to.
DRACSTARI How dare you? THE DOCTOR You've known all about them. You've been working with them all along.
You probably
welcomed your Father's death. Access to the crypt at last. You disgust me, working with them, the abominations of Time Lord society. DRACSTARI How long do you think you'll last in here?
You may have
killed Arth, but that's the last victory you're going to enjoy! And he turns and strides out.
There is silence
Then, very suddenly, the SCRATCHING, CLAWING sound Stoker heard earlier starts again. STOKER I recognise that sound. THE DOCTOR Rebecca, did you say that was
the only door in the room? REBECCA Yes.
It is. THE DOCTOR
What about that one? And he turns and points to the window. REBECCA No-one can get through there, we're miles up, there's only cliff down there. THE DOCTOR No person can get up.
But we're
not dealing with people. And the Doctor, REBECCA and Stoker run for the window. FX: THEIR POV: Vlad, Mina and Lana climbing up the wall at alarming speed. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Quick!
Get out of here.
They all run for the door, the Doctor scooping up the disc as they go. REVERSE as they leave, Vlad, Mina and Lana appear at the
window. MINA The Time Lord is indeed clever. But we will catch him. LANA We will catch him and drink his blood! CUT TO: INT. CORRIDOR THE DOCTOR, REBECCA and STOKER are running along the corridor. STOKER Doctor, where are we going? THE DOCTOR To the crypt!
I need to find
out what's in there! CUT TO: INT. UNDERGROUND HALLWAY THE DOCTOR, REBECCA and STOKER run down the hallway.
The
Doctor reaches into his pocket for the Skeleton Key and
inserts it into the lock. THE DOCTOR Come on!
Come on! REBECCA
Doctor, look out! The Doctor turns as PRAC FX: the door to the hallway is BLASTED ASIDE and VLAD, MINA and LANA appear. THE DOCTOR I'll have to work faster. He twists and turns the key. FX: the three vampires are now FLYING down the corridor towards them. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Done it! He yanks the door open and they all scurry inside. CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - MAIN CHAMBER THE DOCTOR slams the door shut just as a crash is heard on the other side.
THE DOCTOR Right, we'd better get looking. REBECCA What are we looking for? THE DOCTOR I don't know, anything out of the ordinary. And he heads off. STOKER This entire Castle is out of the ordinary. CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - ANTECHAMBER THE DOCTOR pushes open the door and looks inside. THE DOCTOR Aha!
I've found something.
REBECCA and STOKER enter. REBECCA Is that...? STOKER
'Pon my soul! It is a TARDIS CONSOLE! REBECCA That looks exactly like the console in your TARDIS. THE DOCTOR Exactly. it.
Just no TARDIS with
I see what they're doing. STOKER
I don't understand THE DOCTOR As outcasts, the Valichenbergs don't have access to time travel.
The last time they used
it was when Festari captured them.
But with this, they can
travel through time.
But it's
crude, without the rest of the TARDIS it won't work, just create freaky effects. REBECCA That's why Security cameras and televisions have been popping
up. THE DOCTOR Exactly.
Turn this thing on and
it can affect the environment around it.
It could hurl
objects forwards or backwards in time.
But they're aiming for
full time travel, which they can't do without their complete TARDIS, so they're restoring it. But they need another TARDIS for that. REBECCA But they haven't... wait a minute... THE DOCTOR They do.
They've got mine. REBECCA
Well we need to get it away from here. THE DOCTOR My thoughts exactly. DRACSTARI OOV
You're not moving it anywhere. DRACSTARI steps from the shadows, holding a PISTOL. THE DOCTOR (to Rebecca and Stoker) Get out of here, quick! He tosses Rebecca the Skeleton Key. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Go!
Now!
Rebecca and Stoker run for the door. CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - MAIN CHAMBER REBECCA and STOKER enter the main part of the crypt. REBECCA We can't leave him in there! STOKER We've got no choice.
We don't
stand a chance against those creatures or Dracstari at the moment.
I think I know where we
can get help though.
The two of them run for the door, just as it BURSTS open and FX: VLAD, MINA and LANA FLY past them and into the crypt antechamber. REBECCA We can't leave him! STOKER We have to!
He told us to! CUT TO:
INT. CRYPT - ANTECHAMBER VLAD, MINA and LANA enter the antechamber. VLAD He is ours! DRACSTARI All in good time. PRAC FX: he FIRES. THE DOCTOR crumples. FADE TO: INT. DUNGEON - PRISON CELL - LATER
THE DOCTOR stands alone in a stone prison cell. THE DOCTOR Let me out! DRACSTARI It is pointless to argue. REVERSE, DRACSTARI stands before him. DRACSTARI (CONT'D) We have your TARDIS and we are ready to begin rebuilding our own. THE DOCTOR Where are your friends? DRACSTARI They are preparing.
I have
promised you to them once we have restored our TARDIS.
We
shall become the new lords of time. THE DOCTOR Never.
The Time Lords were a
noble race. noble man.
Your Father was a You are not.
DRACSTARI Insulting me won't get you out of that cell. THE DOCTOR It makes me feel better. DRACSTARI I don't have time for this.
I
must make preparations. THE DOCTOR Dracstari! Dracstari turns back to him. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Think what you're doing here, you're destroying a legacy, a legacy which you can keep alive, a legacy your Father was trying to keep alive.
Don't do this.
The Time Lords were a great people, don't ruin it now by turning against them. DRACSTARI After my Father died I found some old books of his, books
which he'd written. memoirs.
His
They said how much he
had loathed Time Lord lifestyle, how he longed for something more exciting, more free.
He may
have been one of the last of the Time Lords, but he certainly never wanted anything to do with them after he left.
I aim to
rebuild Time Lord society.
From
what I've heard you didn't like it either Doctor.
You too ran
away seeking more exciting things. THE DOCTOR I'm not the one in league with the enemies of Gallifrey. DRACSTARI Maybe not Doctor.
But I'm
afraid you've made your position clear.
You have no place in my
new society. He exits. There is a beat, then LANA appears.
THE DOCTOR Shouldn't you be with your family, awaiting the dawn of Dracstari's new society for renegade Time Lords? LANA I don't care what my family say. You killed my brother. THE DOCTOR And? LANA I'll finish you myself!
You're
mine! The prison bars are flung aside as Lana DIVES into the cell BANG!
Lana stops, then she continues.
BANG!
This time she stumbles, nearly falls over.
BANG!
She falls to the ground, dead.
STOKER and REBECCA appear, Stoker holding a smoking gun. THE DOCTOR That was a close one.
STOKER Three hearts.
Three shots.
REBECCA Doctor, we have to move quickly, they're preparing to drain the energy from your TARDIS! THE DOCTOR We've got no time to lose! CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - ANTECHAMBER DRACSTARI, VLAD and MINA are gathered round the TARDIS console. VLAD Where is Lana?
I grow
impatient! DRACSTARI We shall have to begin without her. MINA We all need to be present! DRACSTARI
We can restore the TARDIS then come back for her. VLAD Very well.
Let us begin.
He reaches forward and pulls a lever on the TARDIS console. CUT TO: EXT. CASTLE - NIGHT The Castle, standing alone on the mountain. FX: then, the entire castle burns with light as in Sc. 11.
The wave of cosmic energy shoots up the spire.
One
tendril of energy SHOOTS out and hits the TARDIS, engulfing it in light. CUT TO: INT. CRYPT - ANTECHAMBER DRACSTARI yanks down a control. DRACSTARI It begins! FX: the console and everyone around it disappears making the usual TARDIS dematerialization sounds.
CUT TO: EXT. CASTLE - MAIN ENTRANCE - NIGHT THE DOCTOR, REBECCA and STOKER run out. THE DOCTOR Oh no! FX: WIDE SHOT of the castle, the TARDIS CONSOLE now inside the spiral of energy being emitted from the spire. CUT TO VLAD, MINA and DRACSTARI all staring in amazement, stood around the TARDIS console as the TARDIS begins to rebuild itself. CUT TO the Doctor. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) We don't have long. FX: they run towards the TARDIS under the beam of cosmic energy. CUT TO: INT. TARDIS Inside, the TARDIS is glowing with PRAC BLUE LIGHT. STOKER stares with amazement.
STOKER This is absolutely fascinating. THE DOCTOR No time to enjoy the view, I have to get the TARDIS out of here! STOKER Well presumably it's just a matter of operating this console here. THE DOCTOR Don't touch! Too late, Stoker touches the console. FX: (stunt?) Stoker is hurled across the room where he hits the wall and falls to the ground hard. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) I should have said earlier. console's channeling cosmic energy through it. REBECCA Will he be alright? THE DOCTOR doesn't answer.
The
THE DOCTOR I have to find a way to move the TARDIS without the console. He suddenly looks round at the roundels all around the wall. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) (realizing) Of course!
It's so simple!
And he runs over to the wall and removes one of the roundels. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) I have to kick start the console from here. He pulls a tangle of wires out of the roundel. REBECCA crouches down next to Stoker, feels his pulse. REBECCA He's alright Doctor, just out cold. THE DOCTOR He's lucky.
I've heard stories
of people having their brains fried.
CUT TO: EXT. VILLAGE - NIGHT The VILLAGERS are running out of their homes. FX: from their homes they can see the cosmic energy reaching up into the sky.
They watch in terror.
VILLAGER It's witchcraft again! Witchcraft! EXT. CASTLE - NIGHT - FX SHOT The TARDIS console has nearly fully regenerated itself. The Police Box outline can be seen fading in. VLAD Just a few minutes more and we shall have the mastery of time. CUT TO: INT. TARDIS THE DOCTOR holds two wires away from each other. THE DOCTOR I hope this works.
He touches the two wires together CUT TO: EXT. CASTLE - MAIN ENTRANCE - NIGHT FX: the TARDIS dematerializes the cosmic energy beam still continues on the spot where the TARDIS was.
The
TARDIS materializes again a few feet away. THE DOCTOR and REBECCA exit. REBECCA What now? THE DOCTOR I don't know. He takes a pair of binoculars out of his pocket and unfolds them. FX: HIS POV: VLAD, MINA and DRACSTARI round the TARDIS console, they are barely visible now as the Police Box has nearly fully formed. REBECCA What's going on? THE DOCTOR It looks like it's working. may be too late.
We
FX: HIS POV: the Police Box has fully formed now. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Oh no!
It's finished! CUT TO:
INT. TARDIS#2 The atmosphere is triumphant. DRACSTARI We've done it! VLAD Now to destroy the Time Lord. Suddenly, the TARDIS JUDDERS. MINA What was that? DRACSTARI Stabilizing problems I think. It won't last long. The TARDIS judders again, more violently now. FX: suddenly, a part of the wall is RIPPED away, leaving it open to the cosmic beam beyond.
Then before their
very eyes, the TARDIS begins to DISSOLVE.
MINA What's happening to it? FX: the TARDIS begins to dissolve more rapidly, melting away. VLAD We have to get out! FX: but it is too late, they are dissolving as well. They all scream simultaneously as they dissolve into nothingness. CUT TO: EXT. CASTLE - MAIN ENTRANCE - NIGHT THE DOCTOR watches through the binoculars as FX: HIS POV: the TARDIS dissolves away. REBECCA What happened to them? THE DOCTOR They've gone the way of the icecream. Rebecca smiles. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
At last.
The war is over. REBECCA
You must be very pleased. THE DOCTOR I'd hoped, a long time ago, that I could reach a compromise with these sorts of people.
Then I
remembered why they were outcasts. REBECCA Last of the Time Lords again. THE DOCTOR Yep.
Nothing's going to change
that. REBECCA You shouldn't be so pessimistic. THE DOCTOR I'm only being wise. REBECCA Doctor, what about Bram Stoker, is he going to be okay? THE DOCTOR
I'll have to do a neuroscan but I think he'll be alright. CUT TO: INT. TARDIS STOKER is still lying on the ground with a strange device now attached to his head.
THE DOCTOR is observing a
screen on the TARDIS console. THE DOCTOR He'll be alright.
But his
memory's been slightly jumbled up. REBECCA Will he remember us? THE DOCTOR Oh yes.
But he won't remember
the TARDIS.
He'll remember all
that's happened in fuzzy detail. It might even help with the book, I don't know how much he'll remember in terms of what's just happened. Stoker begins to stir.
THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) He's waking up, we'd better get him outside. The two of them pick him up and carry him outside. CUT TO: EXT. CASTLE - MAIN ENTRANCE - NIGHT STOKER has fully woken up now. STOKER Oh dear, this is all very embarrassing.
What happened.
THE DOCTOR You collapsed.
Too much to
drink. STOKER Dear oh dear.
I've never been
known to get this drunk before. THE DOCTOR First time for everything. STOKER I do hope I haven't done anything to inconvenience
Dracstari. THE DOCTOR No, no, not at all, he just left. STOKER Left?
To where? THE DOCTOR
He decided the Castle brought back too many sad memories. STOKER I see.
Well then I don't really
think there's much point in me staying anymore. THE DOCTOR But what about the research for the book? STOKER Oh, I think I've got enough material to work with.
In fact
I've had some very good ideas. It's amazing how a little drink can influence you.
Yes, I think
I'll leave tomorrow on the next
train.
I have a wife and young
son waiting for me. THE DOCTOR Then don't delay any longer. Just get writing. STOKER Thank you Doctor and you too Rebecca.
I was very pleased to
make your acquaintances. THE DOCTOR Yes, and we yours. STOKER Goodbye. And he turns and walks through the gates. STOKER (CONT'D) Carriage!
Carriage! REBECCA
And that's how he came to write Dracula. THE DOCTOR Yes.
Come on, we'd better leave
before we overfill his head with
ideas. And they both go into the TARDIS. CUT TO: INT. TARDIS THE DOCTOR and REBECCA enter the TARDIS. THE DOCTOR Shame really. REBECCA Why do you say that? THE DOCTOR If he hadn't touched the console I can't even begin to imagine how much more exciting Dracula would have been.
Oh well, the
possibilities are endless. REBECCA Doctor, are you saying that everything he's seen has just become an idea? THE DOCTOR Yes.
He's remembered the names
and events, but it's as if they're just ideas he's come up with. REBECCA Oh I see. She laughs. REBECCA (CONT'D) He's just taken part in the real-life version of his book. THE DOCTOR Exactly.
Probably just as well
he doesn't remember it.
But
having Bram Stoker and Charles Dickens in this TARDIS. that's pretty special.
I think I really
should have some plaques put up: "Bram Stoker was here". They both laugh. The Doctor then notices Dracula sitting on one of the TARDIS chairs. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) Actually, I think I need to just double-check something.
It'll
only take a minute. He crosses over to the console. THE DOCTOR (CONT'D) We just need to go into the future a tiny bit. nothing's wrong.
Check Who knows?
There could be a completely new edition. CUT TO: EXT. TRAIN - DAY A train speeding along. CUT TO: INT. TRAIN STOKER is sitting in a compartment, staring thoughtfully into space.
Then he reaches into his bag, draws out a
quill and ink bottle, dips the quill in the ink and begins to write. He writes DRACULA by Bram Stoker and then begins to write the first line.
As he continues to write CUT TO:
INT. BOOKSHOP An entire shelf is covered with books with a cover reading: "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. LOW ANGLE as a MAN enters the bookshop, picks up one of the books, flicks through it. TILT UP to reveal it is THE DOCTOR. THE DOCTOR Well done Bram, well done. And he puts the book down and leaves. END OF EPISODE FOUR
