Good Timing

In some Latino cultures, there is a relaxed attitude about timing and punctuality. A meeting at 2 p.m. could be interpreted to mean that it will start at approximately 2:30 p.m., possibly not before 3 p.m. While this may be socially acceptable among friends and family, it is unwise to assume that it is acceptable in the work environment.

In the United States, punctuality is usually perceived as a matter of respect for the person or people you are meeting, and as a reflection your capability and professionalism. An individual who is chronically late, may find that he is not advancing in his career, or worse, find himself out of work.

Tips to Improve Punctuality • Wear a watch. If you don’t like wristwatches, consider pocket watches or the clock on a cell phone. • Keep track of appointments. You might have an excellent memory, but most people benefit from a written schedule, whether on a calendar, day planner or PDA. • Allow time for emergencies. If there is ice on your
