Disability Representation Developing your case studies

Objectives • P1 Finish watching My Left Foot • P2 MIGRAIN + SHEP analysis of MLF example scenes. • P3 Develop theoretical approach to disability representation • P4 Plan essay

Starter • Historical attitudes have changed towards disability in the media: • Is this because more people with disabilities are creating their own Media? • Or is it an example of hegemony at work? • Examine the questions above and see if you can develop an approach using some of the examples you have researched or viewed. • 10mins

Viewing • While we watch the end of My Left Foot ensure that you make notes. • Your focus might be: – Stereotypes – Countertypes – Media Language used (especially camera, use of humour in script, performance)

• Try to identify one or more short scenes which you would choose to analyse as an example.

Sample Scenes • Using your chosen scene: write down the reasons why it would be good to analyse from the POV of representation. • Move round the room and read each others. • Add any further reasons which you can think of to each paper. • Re-read your own.

Feedback • Discuss chosen scenes and develop connections between them. • What is the POV of the film makers (Institution/Ideology)? • How do the awards given to Daniel Day Lewis for his performance reveal the Institutional approach to Disability at the time of the film’s release? • If the film were to be remade by Channel 4 what would be different?

Focus scene • Watch focus scene. • Analyse using MIGRAIN • Apply SHEP • Develop Theory

P3 • Using research done for Home Study and including examples from media you have encountered write a paragraph exploring how media attitudes have changed towards Disability in the UK. • You have 10 minutes • Ensure that you use clear examples and contextualise.

Essay title • It has been said that media representations often reflect the social and political concerns of the age in which they are created. Discuss. • Mark Scheme

Create Essay Plan • You will need at least 6 paragraphs for your essay • Use the next 10 minutes to create a list of ideas you think you might need to explore.

Homestudy • Due Thursday week. • Representation essay: Disability (post on Weebly and email to me) • MEST 4 • 1st draft of Critical Investigation and plan for production (post on Weebly and emailed to me)
