Diet Coke (formally known as Diet Coca Coca-Cola) is a sugar-free soft drink produced and distributed by The Coca-Cola Company. It was introduced in the United States on Independence Day in 1982 as the first new brand since 1886 to use the Coca-Cola trademark. The product quickly overtook Tab in sales. Diet Coke was sweetened with aspartame after the sweetener became available in the United States in 1983; however,, to save money, this was originally in a blend with saccharin. After Diet Rite cola advertised its 100 percent use of aspartame, and the manufacturer of NutraSweet (then, G.D. Searle & Company)) warned that the NutraSweet utraSweet trademark would not be made available to a blend of sweeteners, Coca Coca-Cola Cola switched the formula to 100 percent NutraSweet, later switching back and doing without the NutraSweet trademark. Diet Coke from [1] fountain dispensers still contains some sacc saccharin to extend shelf life.
Coca-Cola light logo In other countries, in which cyclamates are not banned (as they were in the U.S. and the United Kingdom in 1970), Diet Coke or Coca-Cola Cola Light may be sweetened with a blend containing cyclamates, aspartame, aspartame and acesulfame potassium. In 2005, under pressure from retailer Wal Wal-Mart (which was impressed with the popularity of Splenda sweetener), the company released a new formulation called "Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda". Sucralose and acesulfame potassium replace aspartame in this version. Early sales were weaker than anticipated; however, Coca-Cola Coca did little advertising ertising for the brand, investing money and advertising in Coca-Cola Zero instead. Diet Coke does not use a modified form of the Coca Coca-Cola recipe, but instead an entirely different rent formula. The controversial New Coke,, introduced in 1985, used a version of the Diet Coke recipe that contained high fructose corn syrup and had a slightly different balance of ingredients. In 2004, Coca Coca-Cola introduced Coca-Cola Coca C2, which it claims tastes much closer to Coca-Cola Cola but contains half the carbohydrates.. In 2005, the company introduced Coca-Cola Zero, a sugar-free free variation of regular Coca-Cola. When Tab was released in 1963, the Coca Coca-Cola Cola Company refused to release a diet soda with the Coca-Cola Coca name, fearing that its flagship brand might suffer. Its rival Pepsi had no such qualms, and after the long-term long success of its sugar-free Diet Pepsi (launched ched in 1964) became clear, Coca Coca-Cola Cola decided to launch a competing sugar-free sugar brand under the Coca-Cola Cola name, which could be marketed more extensively than the more anonymous Tab. Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi have capitalized on the markets of people who requ require ire low sugar regimens, such as diabetics,, athletes, and people concerned with calorie intake. In the UK, a 330 ml can of Diet Coke contains around 1.3 calories (5 kilojoules) ules) compared to 142 calories (595 kJ) for a regular can of Coca Coca-Cola. Contents [hide] • • • • • •

In the United States and most English-speaking countries, the soft drink is called Diet Coke or Diet CocaCola. In most of continental Europe, the drink is marketed as Coca-Cola Light, but often referred to as Cola or [citation needed] Cola Light. Coca-Cola has tried to discourage the use of these generic terms, and commercials refer only to "Coke Light" or "Coca-Cola Light." In French-speaking Canada it is called Coca-Cola Diète.

[edit] Debate over health issues
Wikinews has related news: Fizzy drinks out of New Zealand schools from 2009 The most commonly distributed version of Diet Coke (and majority of beverages using artificial sweeteners) relies on Aspartame,, which has been blamed by some scientists and medical professionals for possibly causing serious [2][3] illnesses (such as cancer, brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma) when consumed in large quantities . One [4][5] of the chemicals produced by aspartame after ingestion is methanol. It should be noted that Coca-Cola Coca has
now released Diet Coke sweetened with sucralose (also known as Splenda), although it is not as common. See also soft drink controversy. [6]
Also, the sodium benzoate was found to break down mitochondrial DNA in living yeast cells. Research published in 2007 for the UK's Food Standards Agency suggests that sodium benzoate (E211) is linked to hyperactive behaviour and decreased intelligence in children. http://www.thecoca-colacompany.com/brands/diet_coke.html Products And Packaging Myths & Rumors Rumor: Child dies after drinking Coca-Cola light® followed by chewing menthol-flavored chewy candy A rumor has been circulating the Internet that a boy has died in Brazil from eating Mentos and drinking Coca-Cola light. This is a hoax, most likely triggered by the well-known "Diet Coke/Mentos fountain phenomenon." Our Response: There is a false rumor circulating via email on the Internet that claims that a child in Brazil died after drinking Coca-Cola light followed by chewing menthol-flavored chewy candy. This story is not true. There is no reason to believe that Coca-Cola ingredients together with menthol flavor or any other food or food ingredient would combine to cause any illness. Coca-Cola ingredients and menthol flavoring are widely approved as safe food ingredients and are used worldwide in a variety of foods. This email appears to be linked to a number of amateur videos that have appeared on the Internet, which show people, for fun, mixing Mentos candies with Coca-Cola light (or Diet Coke®) to produce a reaction that causes the Diet Coke to shoot into the air. This reaction is thought to be caused by carbon dioxide (which gives carbonated soft drinks their fizz) permeating the porous surface of the Mentos. However, chewing a Mentos candy destroys the surface needed for the carbon dioxide bubbles to form. Therefore such a foam reaction cannot happen when the two products are ingested. We strongly advise consumers to treat with skepticism unauthorized or untraceable myths and rumors which they find on the Internet, since they often, as in this case, turn out to be entirely false. Q&A Q: Why do Diet Coke and Mentos react this way when combined? A: We haven’t conducted any research on the reaction between Diet Coke and Mentos. However, some scientists
have said that it has something to do with the interaction of carbon dioxide (what gives soft drinks their “fizz”) and the surface of the candy. Q: What happens if you eat Mentos and drink Diet Coke at the same time? A: Nothing out of the ordinary. Chewing the candy destroys the surface needed for the carbon dioxide bubbles to form. Additional Information The Company has capitalized on the popularity of this harmless stunt and has launched a contest that is based on it. Here is some background on that: In June 2006, a video clip produced by Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz began circulating on the internet that showcased an elaborate demonstration of the reaction that occurs when Mentos brand candies are dropped into bottles of Diet Coke. The video, created through an acting troupe called EepyBird, created an immediate online sensation and has since been viewed millions of times. There was no Company involvement in that video. In July 2006, the Company re-launched www.coca-cola.com as its new Coca-Cola brand site. The new site features user generated content driven by regular challenges that invite consumers to post their own videos in response to creative “briefs” that outline a particular theme. The videos are judged and prizes awarded to winners. Given the strategic direction of the new website, the Company entered into a sponsorship agreement with the producers of the video to create a new video which is more elaborate. The Company is featuring the new video on its site along with a challenge for the month of November asking consumers to create their own video around the theme of “Poetry in Motion.” The challenge is not asking people to recreate the Diet Coke and Mentos video. The video will also be available on Google Video and the producers’ site and will include post-roll advertising and banner advertising driving viewers to Coke.com.

Rebecca, Global Marketing Scott, FoodService General Management What are the secret ingredients that make your job at The Coca-Cola Company so refreshing? One Key Ingredient is Opportunity “When I look back at the last 13 years at The Coca-Cola Company, I can really see all the opportunities that this company has presented to me. I began as a manager. Now, I’m a regional vice president. I’ve had the opportunity to work with the No. 1 brand in the world and its strong portfolio of products that make such the difference in our sales. I’ve had the privilege to work with some of the most talented and passionate professionals in the industry. They are focused, energized and want to succeed – but more importantly, they want to make a difference. I’ve had the chance to see things that I never thought I would have. My international assignments have taken me all over the world. I’ve seen my Boston sports teams win. I went to Olympics in Italy and Greece. I’ve seen my efforts with diversity take shape. They’re starting to get noticed by people outside the Company, like when we won the Diversity Inc. award and when I was named one of the top 50 under 50 for National Black MBA professionals. I’ve seen great PR that attracts top talent, and I’m proud of work that my division’s president is doing. I’ve had an opportunity to go to the Executive Leadership Meeting, where Neville Isdell gave a speech that was amazing. The Coca-Cola Company is really one place where the opportunities are truly endless.”
Scott, FoodService General Management Tania, Information Technology General Management What are the secret ingredients that make your job at The Coca-Cola Company so refreshing? A Touch of Excitement "The thought of driving change for a company as historical and almost legendary as The Coca-Cola Company is exciting. It’s exciting because of the link with the consumer. We work at a real level that connects directly with billions of people around the globe each and every day. We are a part of the best known brand in the world and with that comes a tremendous amount of responsibility. As a relative new-comer to the organization, I have always
identified with The Coca-Cola Company as a consumer, but now as an associate I get to be part of the heritage, and more importantly, I get to be part of what’s to come. To me, that is what’s awesome!" A Splash of Creativity "I like the diversity of the organization. The ideas, the markets, the portfolio of brands and approach, it’s like a small company where you can make an impact and see the difference. It’s where a little gem of an idea can and has turned into something extraordinary. The company encourages and supports you being “fluid”. You can look beyond your job description to other ideas you might have. You’re not just doing a j-o-b. You have the freedom to innovate and execute your ideas. It’s really like a big and small company all in one."
Tania, Information Technology General Management Vikram, Strategic Growth What are the secret ingredients that make your job at The Coca-Cola Company so refreshing? One Part Impact “The impact that The Coca-Cola Company has is amazing. I've been with The Coca-Cola Company for a short time and and I can already see the meaningful significance that The Coca-Cola Company makes in the world. Many of our products are sold at small “mom and pop” stores. The margins the owners receive on our products often impacts their ability to support their family, and gives them an opportunity to send their kids to college. It can transform their lives from a traditional economy to a modern economy with more opportunity. The value that we create and share is more than just providing a refreshing beverage. We truly have global impact and are making a difference.” One Part Passion “There is a tremendous amount of fantastic history and tradition here. At first I thought that because of this the culture would be slow to react and bound by hierarchy. That’s definitely not the case. The culture is very factbased and they are quick to move into action. They believe in their portfolio of brands and look to constantly improve and expand. From management to entry-level, everyone shares the same passion and has a clear understanding of what needs to be done.”
Vikram, Strategic Growth Melissa, Brand Marketing What are the secret ingredients that make your job at The Coca-Cola Company so refreshing? Taste the Excitement “Being a part of such a global icon makes each day exciting. Right now, I’m in the energy drink category. It’s a new category to the company, which makes things so interesting. The oldest energy brand has only been around for a year, so it’s a huge departure from the traditional Coca-Cola brands. It’s amazing to see when a new brand and its marketing programs connect with the consumers. We are such an immense brand, and really an icon to the whole world. It takes the efforts of entire teams to get programs and products into the mainstream marketplace. And that’s why everyone shares the same passion for the brands and the Company. The results of their efforts and teamwork can be seen all over the world. It’s truly a rewarding experience. From the way I’ve grown personally and professionally to traveling to different countries and experiencing different cultures to even the community efforts of the Company, there’s always excitement around the corner.”
