Defensive Drills 1 v 1 Defence - Students are organised into 2 lines at the base line, with the teacher at the centre circle with a ball - The teacher rolls a ball towards the net, calling ‘go’ for the first player from each line to run out to - The player who gets to the ball first is the attacker and the other player becomes the defender - The attacker aims to score a shot using a layup, whilst the defender is to defend the shot and prevent the shooter from shooting. - Defender can also attempt to force the attacker to one side - Once the ball goes out of the court, the students’ turn is over and the next student from each line is to get ready to go - Students continue through until all have had a turn - Focus should be on the defensive player Progression - Increase attacker to make it 2 v 1 - Change playing area - Increase difficult of ball retrieval (rolling the ball) KTPS - Knees bent to get low - Follow the movements of the attacker - Positioning and movement to force player to one side - Attempt to intercept shot/pass Defensive Circuit - 3 cones are positioned around the net - Students are split into two teams, one the attacking and one the defending. The attacking team lines up at the centre circle, and the defensive team lines up on the base line - Two attackers and one defender go at a time. One attacker begins with the ball, and one starts on cone 3 - On the call, the attacker dribbles the ball to cone 1, with the defender sprinting to the attacker and showing a defensive close out (attacker attempts the shot and defender defends the shot) - The attacker then dribbles to cone 2 whilst the defender travel along-side them, defending on the move - The attacker passes the ball to the player on cone 3, whilst the defender attempts to intercept the pass - The attacker with the ball now attempts a layup, with the defender aiming to defend, forcing the player to the side and interception on the shot - Once the circuit is completed, another 3 student (1 defender, 2 attackers) begin - At any time, if the defender gets the ball or knocks it out of the court, the round is over and the next students start - Focus should be on the defensive player Progression - Change playing area - Manipulate types of defensive focus - Add time limit KTPS - Knees bent to get low - Follow the movements of the attacker

4 v 3 Mini Game - Students are organised into groups of 7, with 4 attackers and 3 defenders (depending on numbers) - Students are to play a mini game, with the boundary set with cones (will depend on group size, but just smaller than half of court) - The defenders aim to play man on man, however are to make attempts to intercept passes, knock the ball out and prevent shots from the attacking team - The attacking team must pass to all other their plays before attempting a shot - Regular basketball rules apply - Rotate attacking and defending players after given time or number of shots Progression - Change playing area - Change number of players - Limit number of passes KTPS - Knees bent to get low - Follow the movements of the attacker - Positioning and movement to force player to one side - Attempt to intercept shot/pass
