Job Search Careers Research can fall into several categories and the aim of this guide is to pinpoint some of the top tools and key resource areas. These can be borrowed in the usual way and include books on: top employers, how to write winning resumes (CVs), interviewing techniques, assessment tests, and guides to jobs in various industries. These are listed in the Library catalogue and are clearly labelled “Careers Collection”. Vault - Key Resource Profile Portal>Library >A-Z List of Databases>Vault Vault is a specialised job search product and a key careers resource. It offers guidance on all aspects of job search: networking, interviewing and CV (resume) writing and also provides industry reviews and occupational profiles with guides to the top employers within and industry and finally specific company profiles. To take GE as an example: Vault Company Data Go to the home page and pick Company On this page browse the A-Z list or enter the name. You can get a company Gold Snapshot which tells you about the history and personality of the company. You can also link to Employer Surveys which are personal views (not verified or endorsed by Vault) Also here you will fund the Message Board where you can raise questions such as asking for an explanation of a company’s pay scales

Capital IQ A Database that requires prior registration. Portal>Library> A-Z List of Databases>Capital IQ registration request Has good coverage of board members and executives. The scope of information includes: contact information, educational background, current and previous board affiliations, and speciality. It is possible to run a search to filter executives that match a given criteria. ie graduates from a particular university working in a specific job role in a certain region. You can also map the person’s web of professional relationships up to two degrees of separation by clicking on the Relationship Tree link. It is also excellent for detailed company financial data.
6 Researching Industries & Markets This is a huge area and you should consult the library guide to market research. Go to Portal>Library> Help and Advice>Research Resource Guides> Market Research There are also a number of industry research guides to: Energy, Pharmaceutical, Venture Capital & Private Equity, Real Estate, Telecoms, Travel and Tourism.
However you should also refer to the Researching Resources section in the Careers area of Portal and also the industry, finance and consulting sections. 7 Researching Companies Once again this is a huge area and there is a detailed Library guide on this subject. Go to: Portal>Library> Help and Advice>Research Resource Guides>Company Information To pick out a few key databases: Factiva Good for comprehensive international news, professional and trade press coverage plus brief company profiles Hoovers Good for company history and overviews Fame (UK), Amadeus (Europe), Osiris, (International) For company financials. Also includes smaller private companies in UK and Europe. Good to filter companies that match your specific criteria and produce mailing lists. Vault If you are interested in the company as an employer and want to get an insider’s view.
8 Applying, Testing & Interviewing Look at the Careers Services section in Portal under Skills Development for detailed advice, useful links and detail of coaching offered. There are numerous books in the Library on how to write winning CVs and about passing tests and succeeding at interview.
