Summary of Important Research Findings Published in International and National Journals of Repute

9 1. Clastogenic and mutagenic properties of three herbicides viz. Butachlor, Fluchloralin and Benthiocarb were evaluated in the root meristem, flower buds and morphological and many agronomic traits of Vicia faba L. 2. Chemical mutagens like EMS and Sodium azide were employed to induce mutations for agronomic traits and oil content in in Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea).. 3. Mutagenic and carcinogenic properties of metallic compounds (lanthanides) were studied in plants and animal models and clastogenic properties of lanthanide compounds in plant and animals were reported for the first from our laboratory. The report has been published in an International Journal Mutation Research ( Genetic Toxicol. Testing, , Elsevier Publiction, Ireland ). 4. Genotoxic and mutagenic potentials of industrial chemicals viz. Pthalic acid and carbazole were evaluated in vivo in mice. We have reported that pthalic acid and carbazole are genotoxic and mutagenic for animals in vivo. The results were published in an International Journal Mutation Research (Genetic Toxicol. Testing) and Mutation Research (Fundamental and Molecular Mechanism of Mutagenesis, Elsevier Publiction, Ireland) , 500, 97- 101 5. Recurrent Mutagenesis was successfully employed for inducing mutants with quantitative and qualitative changes in oil content in Indian Mustard ( Brassica juncea Czern & Coss) by the use of gamma rays and EMS.. 6. Evaluation of somatic and germ cell clastogenicity and mutagenicity of alpha and beta unsaturated aldehydes (2-Alkanals) has been undertaken as a major research project keeping in view ubiquitous nature of these organic compounds. The three test chemicals viz. 2-trans butenal, 2-trans hexenal and 2-trans, 6-cis nonadienal induced chromosomal aberrations in the bone marrow cells and also in the germ cells and stage specific dominant lethal mutations as well as high frequency of abnormal sperm heads. Although they have failed to induce higher frequency of heritable chromosomal changes i.e. translocations. The reproductive profile observed in the dominant lethal experiment demonstrates similarity in the effect of these three structurally and functionally related compounds in male germ cells. The primary reproductive effect recorded for these chemicals was induction of dominant lethal mutation resulting in the significant reduction in the number of offspring. The ratio of dominant lethal mutation to heritable translocation has been shown to be dependent upon the nature of chemical mutagens and the stage of post-meiotic germ cells affected. In the present investigation with a and bunsaturated aldehydes higher incidence of dominant lethals were induced in early to late spermatids and testicular sperm but the corresponding frequencies of heritable translocations were much lower. Finally, the human genetic hazards posed by the three alpha and beta unsaturated aldehydes are almost identical. On the basis of the results of the present investigation it may be concluded that the alpha and beta unsaturated aldehydes viz. 2-trans butenal, 2-trans hexenal and 2-trans, 6-cis nonadienal are mutagenic in the germ cells of mammals. The research finding has been published in Mutation Rssearch (Genetic Toxicology and Environmental Mutagenesis) , Elsevier, Ireland , 603 (2), 159-163(2006) and 632(1-2) 2007, 69-77.
