Student and Teacher Support Structure
Program Example (Early College High School) Students develop a strong sense of identity by participating in a college classroom. Programs "scaffold the transition from High School to college" which foster responsibility in the students to behave with college expectations and develop the habits of the mind to do college level work (Cunningham & Mathews, p 127, 2007) • ECHSs recruited and enroll underrepresented students. • Some ECHSs offer courses at the high school site; some gave them on the college campus. Some ECHSs relied primarily on high school instructors to teach college courses; others had college faculty teaching these courses. • Utah's ECHSs: Create a challenging educational program and intellectual climate that encourages and supports students to complete a higher education degree in math, science, engineering, or related applied field. (Smoothing the path: Changing state policies to support early college high school, 2006), (Early college high school initiative evaluation year end report:2003-2004, 2005) Seminars provide students with information on college expectations and experience such as selfadvocacy, available resources, and note-taking (Cunningham & Mathews, 2007)
