Helping Remove Barriers to Learning

Youth Service Centers were created as part of the Kentucky Reform Act to be the tool for engaging parents and reaching out to children and parents, in support of the educational process. The goal of the center is to enhance students’ abilities to succeed in school by assisting youth and families in meeting some of their basic needs, and removing barriers to learning. This is done by providing services at the center, working closely with school staff, and linking families to agencies in the community. Warren Central’s FRYSC Coordinator Nancy Booth hosted Driver Safety Day for her students. Students are able to drive the simulator under a variety of weather conditions — rain or snow. They wear goggles that demonstrate their vision if their blood alcohol level is 1.8-2.0. On Saturday, May 16th, we conducted our 12th anniversary AllAmerican Soap Box Derby at the Kiwanis Soap Box Derby Track located at Phil Moore Park. 2010 will mark the 13th year that the Kiwanis club of Bowling Green has partnered with BB&T, our presenting sponsor. A Little Soap Box Derby History...

It’s been called “The Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World”. “The Gravity Grand Prix”-but to most youngsters who’ve participated, it’s just the “Soap Box Derby.” And a “Soap Box Derby” it was christened back in 1933, when a Dayton (Ohio) Daily News Photographer, Myron Scott, encountered three boys racing home-made, engine-less cars down an inclined brick street. Myron’s idea was to hold a coasting race and award a prize to the winner. He told the boys to come back to the same hill with their friends a week later, and they could participate in a race with a “loving cup”as it was called in Depression Americaas a prize.

The “Crimefighter Corvette” and Warren County’s Captain Joe Jakub were selected to participate in the Presidential Inaugural Parade on January 20, 2009, in Washington D.C. Mitchell, Indiana Jr. High seventh-grader Luke Jakub embarked on a history-making journey. This 13-year-old Williams student wasn’t the one making the history — but he was a close witness to the festivities surrounding the inauguration of the first AfricanAmerican president, Barack Obama. Jakub, with his grandparents, rode in the patriotic Corvette of the national Reach For Your Dreams anti-drug Luke Jakub and granddad Captain program in the inaugural Joe Jakub get ready to travel to parade. Jakub said he’s been a Washington DC to the presidential part of some small parades, but inauguration. nothing like this one. “It was a real neat experience for him,” said his proud father, Joe Jakub. One that, as his grandfather Capt. Joseph Jakub pointed out, “Will be something he will remember for the rest of his life, and tell to his grandkids and they will to their grandkids.” Fitting, since it was Luke’s grandfather that helped make the journey possible for this young man. Joseph Jakub, commander of the Anti-Crime Unit for the Warren County, Ky., Sheriff’s Office, founded Reach For Your Dreams. And this was the third presidential inauguration that the group’s Chevrolet Corvette has been in. “The selection process centered around the fact that we have developed an effective, now national, anti-drug program,” Capt. Jakub said. “Plus the additional fact that our ‘CrimeFighter Corvette’ has an outstanding message of patriotism and recognition revolving around our American Flag.” Luke is a member of Reach For Your Dreams and represents youth members of the group. The youngster understands — as well as a 13-year-old can — the magnitude of the event. And while he’s five years from being able to cast a ballot, he did vote for President-elect Obama in an election at school.
