…with Belinda Saltzman, Publisher Have you ever been the recipient of a random act of kindness? It happened to me Tuesday morning, September 15, 2009. I was in the self-service checkout at Kroger where I purchased two items then discovered my wallet was at home. A Kroger clerk saw my exasperated look and asked what was wrong. I told her I’d left my wallet at home. Out of nowhere, a young man, who looked to be around 25 years old, approached me and said, “Here, let me help.” He started counting out money. I said, “No! You can’t do that. The bill is $5.42.” He said, “That’s the point. You’ll never see me again.” I said, “Let me write down your name and address so I can send you the money.” He said, “Just pay it forward.” I stood there, along with the Kroger clerk, stunned with tears in my eyes. I knew what he was referring to when he said “pay it forward.” I saw a movie several yeas ago, Pay It Forward, starring Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt. In the movie, a teacher assigns his class to help three people who will in turn help three more and so on in an everwidening circle. The movie’s theme shows how these random acts of kindness end up dramatically impacting several lives. I can tell you this: I was astounded when that young man insisted on paying for my grocery items and even more astounded when he said “just pay it forward.” I look forward to my spontaneous opportunity to “pay it forward.” Better yet, maybe I should be inspired to pay it forward in some way every day! P.S. The ice cream was for Kyda’s birthday.

…with Belinda Saltzman, Publisher Have you ever been the recipient of a random act of kindness? It happened to me Tuesday morning, September 15, 2009. I was in the self-service checkout at Kroger where I purchased two items then discovered my wallet was at home. A Kroger clerk saw my exasperated look and asked what was wrong. I told her I’d left my wallet at home. Out of nowhere, a young man, who looked to be around 25 years old, approached me and said, “Here, let me help.” He started counting out money. I said, “No! You can’t do that. The bill is $5.42.” He said, “That’s the point. You’ll never see me again.” I said, “Let me write down your name and address so I can send you the money.” He said, “Just pay it forward.” I stood there, along with the Kroger clerk, stunned with tears in my eyes. I knew what he was referring to when he said “pay it forward.” I saw a movie several yeas ago, Pay It Forward, starring Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt. In the movie, a teacher assigns his class to help three people who will in turn help three more and so on in an everwidening circle. The movie’s theme shows how these random acts of kindness end up dramatically impacting several lives. I can tell you this: I was astounded when that young man insisted on paying for my grocery items and even more astounded when he said “just pay it forward.” I look forward to my spontaneous opportunity to “pay it forward.” Better yet, maybe I should be inspired to pay it forward in some way every day! P.S. The ice cream was for Kyda’s birthday.
