Govt. Sen. Sec. School, Doraha CONSTRUCION OF EARTH Scientists have studied about the inside or the interior of the earth. They have prepared a picture or a model of the interior of the earth, which is like an apple. According to this model, the interior of the earth can be broadly divided into three separate layers. These layers are known as: (i) The Crust
(ii) The Mantle
(iii) The Core
Diagram Showing Different Layers of Earth
The Crust It is the outermost layer of the Earth. It is made up of light rocks rich in silica and aluminium. The crust is 35-60km thick under the continents and usually thinner below the oceans. Above the crust is a layer of formed.
The Mantle Below the crust is the mantle, a much thicker shell than the crust. It extends up to 2900km below the crust. It consists of rocks which are made up of iron and magnesium silicate. The pressure inside the mantle increases with the depth, and rocks are present in molten material is known as magma. This magma may be brought to surface by volcanic action and when it comes out, it is known as lava.
The Core It is the innermost part of the earth it has a radius of about 3400km. It is made up mainly of iron and contains some nickel also. The core has two parts, a liquid outer core and a solid inner core.
