Board Members
Jason G. Irizarry is an Assistant Professor in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. A former middle school teacher in New York City, he has most recently worked as a Postdoctoral fellow with the Teachers for a New Era (TNE) Project, a grant-funded program designed to enhance teacher preparation, particularly as a means of improving pupil achievement in K-12 settings. Prior to his arrival at UConn, he was the Director of Project SPIRIT (Springfield Partnership to Improve the Recruitment of Inspiring Minority Teachers), a collegecommunity collaboration aimed at increasing the number of teachers of color in urban schools. He received his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2005 and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in action research, multicultural education, critical pedagogy, philosophy of education, culturally responsive curriculum development, and urban education. His research focuses on urban teacher recruitment, preparation, and retention with an emphasis on increasing the number of teachers of color. Additional areas of interest include youth participatory action research, culturally responsive pedagogy, urban youth culture, and Latino students in U.S. schools.

Short Course Presenter
Suzanne Irujo is Professor Emerita of Education at Boston University, where she taught courses in language acquisition, linguistics, and methods, as well as supervised student teachers in bilingual education, ESL, and modern foreign languages. She holds an Ed.D. in applied psycholinguistics, an M.Ed. in bilingual education, and a B.A. in Spanish. Dr. Irujo is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences and has participated in teacher education programs in Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico. She has served as president of MATSOL and chair of the TESOL Teacher Education Interest Section, and has been a consultant to school districts and state departments of education in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. She is author of the books Teaching Bilingual Children: Beliefs and Behaviors, Integrating the ESL Standards Into Classroom Practice, Collaborative Conversations Among Language Teacher Educators (with M. Hawkins), and The Academic Language Notebooks: The Language of Math (with A. Ragan). Her current work focuses on ways to integrate the explicit teaching of academic language teaching into content area classes.
