Colonial ALES-2 & Colonial ALES-1 CTFA/INCI NAME: Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
DESCRIPTION Colonial ALES-2 and Colonial ALES-1 are noteworthy for generating stable foam consisting of densely packed small bubbles. This produces a “luxurious” feel in cosmetics and toiletries and is also related to the excellent wetting characteristics of ammonium lauryl ether sulfate.

Colonial ALES-2 and Colonial ALES-1 offer all the advantages of ammonium lauryl sulfate in addition to remarkable solubility and high sudsing characteristics. Other properties which make these products noteworthy are: • LOW CLOUD POINT – Cosmetic and toiletry formulations start clear and stay clear under conditions of high water hardness and low temperatures which precipitate many surfactants. • SOLUBILIZING POWER – They are especially helpful for its ability to solubilize many “difficult” ingredients within a formulation. • COLOR AND ODOR – They are produced with the cosmetic formulator in mind. They have a mild, pleasant odor and remain color stable under proper storage conditions. • VISCOSITY RESPONSE – The addition of salts such as ammonium chloride or sodium chloride will considerably thicken these products. Colonial ALES-2 is manufactured to contain only about 0.5% salt, so that the formulator can increase viscosity to practically any desired level through the addition of more salt. This is a special convenience when formulating gel shampoos. • WETTING – They are outstanding wetting agents. Tests using cotton tapes demonstrate that wetting characteristics are even better in hard water.
APPLICATIONS Colonial ALES-2 and Colonial ALES-1 were developed for clear liquid shampoo formulations where low eye irritation is also important. Since such formulations are

prepared to have a pH slightly less than 7, they naturally complement the slightly acidic mantle of the scalp. Colonial ALES-2 and Colonial ALES-1 are also recommended for rich lather bubble baths, particularly for children, where high foam and skin mildness are requisites. Other suitable applications requiring extreme mildness include antiseptic creams, contraceptive foams, diaper rash preventives and deodorant preparations. The properties which make these products useful in cosmetics and drugs are also applicable to light duty household products such as mild liquid detergents for woolens and synthetic fabrics, as well as pet shampoos. For example, the excellent wetting and penetrating ability of Colonial ALES-2, and Colonial ALES-1 recommend their use in household window cleaning products.
TOXICITY Colonial ALES-2 and Colonial ALES-1 release ammonia at pH levels above 7, and the formulator should keep this in mind when preparing blends which will be stored. Storage stability is good, but storage for more than a year is not recommended. LAST UPDATED 07/18/2006
